Introduction

The emergence of technology makes our everyday life easier. Internet provides us with
wide array of possibilities, may it be in terms of communication and such. In fact, the use of the
internet has been widely considered by most of us and it is due to its convenience as well as its
vast uses. One of the beneficial use of the internet and by far the prominent is that it generates an
easier connection or communication with other people from all over the world and for specific
purposes. Also, with the use of internet it can really change people’s lives. It enables students to
do research and find anything on web in just one click.
The use of social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, and Twitter are all
commonly used. Through the use of this, we feel limitless in gathering information that could add
up to our knowledge of certain things (Amedie, J 2015). Moreover, the use of social media
platforms enables students to use this medium in communicating, exchanging ideas with lecturers
and also in gathering knowledge. In recent times, the use of social media has become one of the
most vital communication means that benefited everyone especially students, in terms of
educational purposes and in collaboration with faculty (Al-Rahmi, W. 2013). These social media
sites have been prominent and many students have considered these as a part of their educational
success (Chen, Liang, & Wang 2011).
However, because of the wide acceptance to these social networking sites, students have a
difficulty in keeping their focus on school works and just prefer browsing and checking their social
media accounts (Khurana, N 2015). Furthermore, it is undeniable that these social media platforms
such as Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, Twitter and other social media platforms are really good
in entertaining us, that is why most students are discourage to do their duties and have always been
distracted, because students pay more attention on virtual world of social networking. According
to Zhukova, A (2018) there are seven negative effects of social media on people and users, one of
is that, being addictive to it, to a point wherein you would feel like a day is not complete if you
haven’t checked on your social media accounts.
The freedom that these online social networking sites has given, creates an effect to the academic
performances of students. According to Egedegbe, N (2014) it will depend on what type of social
media site a student is using, if it is for entertainment activity or rather for educational purposes.
