A BRIEF HISTORY OF LGBT COMMUNITY

1900’s
The LGBT community was founded by Harry Hay and he created the first national gay rights
organization, the Mattachine Society, was formed in 1951. The first lesbian rights organization in the US
was founded in 1955.

1800’s
In 1813, William Johnson became the first openly gay person to be ordained in a mainline Protestant
denomination, the United Church of Christ.

2000’s
In early 2000, people are discriminating the LGBT Community and banning the rights of gays and lesbian.
Hence, they continuously protest and fight for their rights and they even plan the’ Pride Month’ for
those who are part in LGBT.

PRESENT TIME
There are a lot of subcategories added in the original name of LGBT in the present time. The LGBT is now
at LGBTQIA+ with the total of 37 subcategories (divided into sexual and genders) and have their own flag
each.

Origin of LGBT Flag


Gilbert Baker found the rainbow flag together with Harvey Milk, an influential gay leader who come up
with a symbol of pride. The colors reflect the diversity of the LGBT community, as the flag is often used
as a symbol of gay pride during LGBT rights marches. While this use of the rainbow flag originated in
Northern California's San Francisco Bay Area, the flag is now used worldwide.
