SWAMI VIVEKANADA’S IDEAS ON UNIVERSAL BROTHERHOOD

Universal brotherhood means all human beings are my brother and sister. It does
not only mean the person of same creed, caste, or religion; but it is irrespective of
all that. In the present time where everyone is fighting for his individual rights,
Swami Vivekananda’s teaching of universal brotherhood becomes more crucial.

The profundity and all inclusiveness of brotherhood and love is grounded in the
truth that we are the offspring of one, that is God. India since its inception, is
adhering to the principal of Vivekananda ji, “Vasudavia kutumbkam” and “Atithi
Devo Bhava” which is the extension universal brotherhood as its core principal of
living in harmony with all beings created by almighty. Swami ji’s concept of
brotherhood is not limited to human beings but he was of the opinion that every
animal, however wicked or weak, great or small, resides the same omnipresent
omniscient soul.

Brotherhood is not only a theoretical concept but also has a practical aspect and
need for the society. Terrorism the worst attack on brotherhood, the main reason
behind it is the feeling of difference in opinion and in the riches enjoyed by the
other part of the society. It could be control by making them feel that we are a
family to each other.

Our constitution makers also address the need of including brotherhood in

constitution. They put word fraternity which represent brotherhood in ‘The
Preamble of The Constitution of India’ considering the diversity of the nation.

This brotherhood could be achieved by preserving the dignity of each individual.

Peaceful co existence, mutual understanding, feeling of sacrifice and to live and to
let live others. The path shown by Swami ji is to be followed for the peaceful
living of all human beings and also the animals respecting each others right and
opinion.
