‘Embrace IoT in fish breeding’

CAGE sh breeders and aquaculture entrepreneurs have been urged to embrace the Internet of Things
(IoT) in their industry.

Deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Sim Tze Tzin said it was time to switch to the
modern technology instead of using the old method to earn their living.

“The new technology of embracing the IoT will help in increasing productivity and reducing labour cost.

“The IoT can alert the farmers by providing them with early warning if something is happening to their
livestock, such as a lack of oxygen and others.

“For now, the modern application of IoT is only used by large companies.

“I hope the cage sh breeders will adopt it and Agro Bank is ready to help them, ” he told reporters after
attending a dialogue session between Agro Bank, cage sh breeders and aquaculture entrepreneurs at
Dewan Serbaguna Tokong Huat Soo Kong, Sungai Udang, Nibong Tebal recently.

Among those present were Sungai Acheh assemblyman Zulki i Ibrahim, Perak state executive
councillor Abdul Yunus Jamhari, Agro Bank chief business of cer Ahnad Shahril Mohd Shariff and
Penang Aquaculture Farmers Association secretary Kamaruddin Harun.

As a mean to expose the farmers to the bene ts of modern sh farming technology, Sim also gave two
high-density polyethylene (HDPE) sh cages to the cage sh breeders who were affected by the tail-end
of Lekima typhoon last month.

These cages cost RM50,000 each.

Sim said he hoped Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng would focus on grassroots voices, including farmers
and farmers, in the coming Budget 2020 session.

He said he had attended a meeting with the Finance Ministry, and voiced his request for assistance to
farmers, breeders and agricultural industry players affected by the storms last month.
