In literature, one of the strongest devices is
imagery wherein the author uses words and
phrases to create “mental images” for the reader.
Imagery can also pertain to details about
movement or a sense of a body in motion
(kinesthetic imagery) or the emotions or
sensations of a person, such as fear or hunger.

shortened version of a  text  that
highlights its key points.

Example (From “The Singa”)
- There is a king called Sang Nila Utama who wants to
go for a hunting trip. Suddenly, a storm occurs and
Sang Nila Utama’s ship is going to sink. He throws at
the sea to stop the storm. They arrive on an island of
Temasek safe. There, he sees an amazing animal called
Singa or a lion. So, he has decided to rename an island
of Temasek to Singa-pura which means “Lion – City”

Based on the story , the “The Singa”, we
can therefore say that:
1. Singapore is an island.
2. Lion is the head symbol of Singapore.
3. Population of Singapore is not big.
4. The people in Singapore are honest,
helpful and adventurous.

Writers address a number of features and


characteristics of two subjects, persons, places,
and events by comparing them from one point to
another. The major purpose of compare is to tell
the similarities of ideas and expound their
meanings that can easily be understood by the
readers.

SINGAPORE HAD AND HAS BECOME
According to the story, “The Singa”,
SINGAPORE was a small island named
from the word Singapura or a Lion City.
From its legendary beginnings it has
become the busiest port in the world and
also one of the most prosperous countries
today.

WHAT ARE THE IMPORTANCE OF LEGENDS IN
THE SOCIETY?
LEGENDS have value as literature, offering
timeless and universal theme. They give us
insight into other times and places. They help us
to see how much humankind had and has in
common.
