SUBJECT: INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE IN THE 1st UOL NATIONAL MOOT COURT

COMPETITION-2019.

Dear Sir/Madam,

It is a source of immense pleasure to invite your esteemed institution to participate in the


1st UOL National Moot Court Competition-2019. The Moot Court Competition is being
organized by The University of Lahore, College of Law, Lahore. The Moot Court
Competition shall be held from 2nd to 4th November, 2019 at The University of Lahore,
College of Law, Lahore.
The Law Schools / Law colleges/ Law Departments are invited to provisionally register
themselves in order to confirm their participation. Registration starts from 28th September ,2019 till 16th
October, 2019 and 24th October ,2019 is the last date of memorial submission. Registration (fee for early
birds is Rs 600/- from Lahore and Rs 800/- per participant from outside Lahore & late registration fee is Rs
800/- from Lahore and Rs 1200/- per participant from outside Lahore). The Moot Problem, Registration
form and the detailed Rules for the Moot Court Competition are enclosed.

-DEFINITIONS
1. “Competition” means the 1st UOL Moot Court Competition, 2019.
2. “Competition Case” means the official hypothetical problem which has been

4. “Memorial” means the written arguments submitted, on behalf of both the Applicants
and Respondents, according to the official rules of the Competition by each Team.
5. “Oral Pleading” means a team member's individual presentation in an Oral Round.
6. “Rules” means these Official Rules of the Competition and any applicable
7. Supplements to these Rules published by the University of Lahore Law moot society
(UOLLMS).
8. “Organizing Committee” means UOLLMS, which shall be responsible for all matters
regarding the Competition and shall supply and distribute all necessary information to
the participating teams.
9. “Team Code” means the code assigned to each registered team by the organizing
committee.
Article 1 Participation – Eligibility
1. Each team shall be comprised of not more than 4 members 2 speakers, 1 researcher and
one 1 coach.
2. Each team shall be represented by the senior members in a team. No other person
may assist the team with researching, writing, editing or other-wise constructing its
arguments. Failure to observe this rule may result in penalization or disqualification.
3. The language of the Competition at all stages is English.
4. Rs.800 per person for teams from Lahore 1200 per person from outside Lahore is the
registration fee for the competition

Article 2: Rules and Guidelines for Memorials


a. Each participating team shall prepare both memorials and counter memorials, in
English. All teams are to submit their copies to the Organizing Committee before the
Deadline i.e. _________, 2019. As a general rule this will be two week prior to the
Start of the Moot Court competition.
Failure to do so will result in disqualification from the competition. Each
memorial and counter memorial shall be submitted to the Organizing
Committee at [Link]@[Link]
b. All the teams have to bring four copies of their Memorials and Counter memorials for
submission to the Judges before each hearing session and retain them at the end of
each session for use in subsequent session. The participating teams should also have
copies of their memorials for their personal use or for oral presentations.
c. All memorials shall be prepared to the following specifications:

[Link] and counter memorial must be sent as a Word or PDF attachment

[Link] Font and size of the text of all parts of the memorial (excluding
footnotes) must be the same and must be in Arial 11 or Times New Roman
12 font size.
[Link] texts of all parts of each memorial must be double-spaced, with one
Inch margin on both sides.
[Link] text of footnotes and headings may be single-spaced. The font size of
footnotes must be 2 points less than the text font.
[Link] must be double spacing between separate footnotes and between
each heading and the body text of the memorial.

included in the 20 typed pages limit.
d. The Memorial shall consist of the following parts:
i. Table of Contents
ii. Index of Authorities (including corresponding page numbers)
iii. Identification of Issues
iv. Statement of Facts
v. Summary of Pleadings
vi. Pleadings including the Conclusion and/or Prayer for Relief.
Article 3 Criteria for assessment of Memorial
a. The assessment of the Memorial shall be out of a maximum of 100 marks, set out as follows:
Written Memorials 30 Marks
Appreciation of Fact and Law 15 Marks
Advocacy (Arguments, Framing of issues, expression and articulation) 30 Marks
Use of Authorities and Citations 15 Marks
Use of proper font, size, foot notes Etc. 10 Marks
b. The written memorials submitted by participating teams shall be evaluated by an
expert(s) of appointed by UOLLMS and marks will be awarded for them. These marks
will be taken into consideration, along with marks awarded by judges for the teams
during the oral presentation made by them, in the competition.
c. Winners will be selected based upon their oral performance and written memorial
d. The written memorial marks of the teams will be twenty percent of overall
assessment to select the winners of the Competition

Article 4: Oral Pleadings

a. The scope of a team's Oral Pleadings is limited to arguments in the Memorial. In the Oral
Rounds a team may cite judicial decisions handed down after the deadline for submission
of the team’s Memorial, provided that the judicial decision is not being used to raise an
argument which was not included in the Memorial.
b. The order of the pleadings in each Oral Round at all levels of the Competition will be:
Applicant 1, Applicant 2, Respondent 1 and Respondent 2 followed by the Applicant’s
Rebuttal and then the Respondent’s sur-rebuttal.
c. Only two (2) team members shall present the arguments during an Oral Round on a team’s
behalf.

Article 5 Time Allocation


a. Each team’s Oral Pleadings cannot exceed thirty-five minutes, including the time for
answering questions from adjudicators and rebuttals or surrebuttals.
b. The team must inform the bailiff of the manner in which it wishes to divide its thirty-five
minutes between its
(i) First Oral list, (ii) second Oral list, and (iii) the rebuttal (for Applicant)
or Surrebuttal (for Respondent). The time allocation informed to the bailiff may not be
Re-arranged.
c. No Oral list may be allocated less than ten minutes for presentation of main arguments and
no more than four minutes may be reserved for rebuttal or surrebuttal.
d. The Respondent team may use the time set aside for surrebuttal only if the Applicant
team exercises its right to rebuttal.
e. If a team fails to allocate time for a rebuttal or surrebuttal it may not then request that
such time be added during the course of the oral round.

Article 6 Criteria for assessment of Oral Pleadings


The assessment of oral pleadings shall be out of a maximum of 100 marks, set out
as follows:
Knowledge of Facts & Law 20 Marks
Interpretation of facts and their application 20 Marks
Use of Authorities 15 Marks
Style, Poise & Court Manners 15 Marks
Organization of argument 15 Marks
Time Management 15 Marks

Article 7 Anonymity
a. To ensure the smooth functioning of the Moot Court and avoid any perception of
bias during the competition, Organizing Committee will maintain anonymity of the
college/university/institute names throughout the competition. To ensure this
Organizing Committee will allocate a code number to each participating team in
the competition.
b. This code is to be applied by Organizing Committee to the participating teams
during the competition, including on their written memorials.

Article 8 Competition Prizes

The following prizes will be awarded:


a. ‘Winner’ and ‘Runner-up’ for the overall competition,
b. The team with the highest aggregate Memorial points will win the prize for the Best
Memorial.
c. The participant with the highest average score will be adjudged the Best
Individual Oral list. The average score will be calculated by dividing the total number
of points of each speaker by the number of times the speaker has presented oral
arguments. Participants have to present oral arguments a minimum of two times to
be eligible for this prize.

Article 9 Miscellaneous Rules regarding Memorials and Competition

a. Upon completion of the competition Organizing Committee reserves the


exclusive right to use the memorials submitted to them, as they deem
appropriate.
b. Organizing Committee reserves the right to amend, modify or repeal any of the
rules if so required and as they deem appropriate. Participating teams shall
receive adequate notice of any/all such amendments or modifications to the
rules.
c. Organizing Committee shall not be held responsible for any loss or non-delivery
of the Memorials.
d. Participating teams are expected to bring their own study or reference materials
required for their use during the oral rounds of competition.6
e. Participating teams shall be expected to maintain the proper decorum of the
Court during the proceedings and shall conduct themselves in a manner
befitting the legal profession.
f. Organizing Committee reserves the right to take appropriate action for any
unethical, unprofessional and wrongful conduct during the entire period of the
Competition.
g. Organizing Committee’s decision as regards the interpretation of these Rules or
any other matters related to the Competition shall be final and binding. If there is any
situation, which is not covered by these Rules, the decision of the Organizing
Committee.
