Type of lesson: mixed
Time allowed: 50 minutes

Aims of the lesson:

 to introduce new vocabulary related to the topic (talents)


 to contextualize the new terminology
 to check listening/ reading comprehension
 to introduce the modal “Can” as a means of expressing ability
 to encourage variety of interaction

Skills: reading, listening, speaking, writing.

Materials: textbook, paper strips, laptop, video projector, CD-rom, PPT,


blackboard, chalk;

Classroom interactions: Whole class, Individual work, Group work


Stages of the lesson

Activity 1: Warm up

Aims: - to break the ice and to revise the information acquired during the
previous lesson (the verb “Have got”)
- to check the homework and to introduce the new topic (Talent
Show)

Procedure:
 the T prepared some questions written on paper strips, which she
distributes among children, randomly, and the Ss pick a partner
and ask them the question, which they have to answer
 the T checks their homework (ex. 3/ p.9 ) and corrects potential
mistakes

Skills: speaking, reading

Time: 5 minutes

Activity 2: Vocabulary practice

Aims: -to present new words and phrases related to personal skills
-to improve pronunciation

Procedure:
 the T plays the class the CD and presents them the new vocabulary,
they have to listen carefully and repeat so as to acquire them more
easily
 then she writes them on the blackboard and invites the pupils to
copy them in their notebooks

Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-T

Time: 10’
Activity 3: Listening practice

Aims: - to contextualize the new information


- to allow pupils to expand their knowledge
- to provide opportunity for speaking practice in a role play

Procedure:
 the T plays the movie to the class, invites them to listen carefully
and then invites them to read the story assuming roles

Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-Ss

Skills: listening, reading

Time: 10’

Activity 4: Reading comprehension

Aims: - to check the understanding of written messages


- to encourage reading for specific information (scanning)

Procedure:
 the T asks text-related questions to check the pupils’ understanding
of the story (ex: Can Emma play the piano?/ Can Lee play the
guitar?/ Can Harry sing? /Can Mona play the piano? )
 then they solve ex.2/ p.10 in the notebook while the T writes on the
blackboard

Activity 5: Grammar focus

Aims: - to introduce the modal verb “can” as a means of expressing


ability
- to encourage its use in everyday speech
Procedure:
 the T plays for the pupils a power point presentation outlining the
forms of the modal verb CAN (affirmative, negative, interrogative)
and the meaning it invests the main verb with in a sentence
 the T then offers her class some examples on the blackboard and
invites them to write them down in their notebooks
 the T gives students some practice suggesting a game on the
computer (17a) and they gave to follow the instructions and
complete the gapped sentences with the missing words. Each pupil
that comes and provides the answer also writes the sentence on the
blackboard

Activity 5: Evaluation and setting the homework

Aims: - to consolidate the newly-acquired vocabulary and grammar


structures
- to improve writing skills

Procedure:
 the T gives the pupils an exercise which assesses their cognitive
learning (17b), she then checks the answers with the whole class,
offering them feedback
 the T gives them the assignment: they are supposed to work ex. 3 on
page 11 in their manual
 finally, she grades the pupils for their participation and contribution
to the lesson
