As my clinical placement ends, I look back on my experiences of being in the actual

work environment as well as working with the members of the multidisciplinary team. To
better organize and process my reflection, I will use Rolf’s Model of Reflection as it would
organize my thoughts in a concise manner.
What Happened?
For the length of five weeks I was exposed to the working environment at CHT St.
Margaret’s as an assistant to the activities staff as part of my clinical placement. As such I
was introduced to the rest of the multidisciplinary team including: the Registered Nurses,
Healthcare Assistants, Receptionist, Kitchen Staff, and the Facility Manager. I was then
shown how the activities are done every day and how they coordinate with the HCA’s of
the various wings in the facility whenever they want certain residents to join in the
activities of the day and how the activities have to be within the timeframe to avoid
clashing with the residents’ lunchtime
So What?
This experience teaches me that to be a part of the multidisciplinary team is to work
with the other staff as we do not know everything about our client and sometimes it could
the mean the difference in whether or not the clients would be able to join in the activities
that can affect our work as Diversional Therapists. Furthermore, my observations during
my placement is how fluid the processes are from start to end of shift and that all the
residents being brought to activities are likely to participate, even the ones from the
dementia wing because there were HCAs assisting the activities coordinators to ensure that
the residents are safe and that their needs are attended to during activities.
Now What?
In light of all these insights and to better improve my practice as a professional
Diversional Therapist, I need to be more aware of my role within the healthcare team and
that I should improve my communication skills and interpersonal skills to better coordinate
with the other members of the multidisciplinary team as well as be aware of their roles to
know how to coordinate with them. If I can learn these things, then it would help me ensure
that procedures get done smoothly and on time.
