Song Suggestion

The song that I would like to show the class is St. Thomas by Sonny Rollins. Sonny Rollins was
born in 1930 in New York City. as an adolescent he was exposed to the pan-african movements
of Marcus Garvey and the incredible cultural explosion known as the Harlem Renaissance. He
represents a modern-day griot of African American culture. When he released the song saint
Thomas in 1957 it showed his return to his roots. Saint Thomas was was originally a folk song
performed in the Caribbean to pull children to sleep. Sunny re-appropriate this theme and turn it
into a virtuosic jazz standard. his endless repetition and development of the theme showcases
tremendously advanced prowess as both an improviser and a saxophone player.he's one of my
favorite musicians of all time and I would love to share his legacy with the class.
