Scoring Guidelines

90-100 - Managers do a good job in communicating and engaging all levels of employess in the value
stream mapping process. Continue with regular improvement project updates. Share best practices
within the organization and present White Papers, as appropriate. Continue to reinforce the value of
value stream maps and how they can provide the roadmap for improvement within the organization.

80-89 - Managers have worked with leaders in creating effective value stream map, but continued work
needs to be done. Value stream maps are being created, but not throughout the organization. Hold
managers accountable to creating value stream maps with associated Kaizen activities. Acknoweldge
there should be an overall plan for continuous improvement and should be fully supported by top
mangement.

70-79 - Managers have provided limited communication and training with employees on the basics of
value stream mapping and waste identfication, but are aware of the importance its importance. Begin to
communicate the need to improve waste identification and elimination as well as through formal
training and application. Waste identification on a value stream map is a big first step to ensure
employees understand the need to change as well as be a willing participant.

60-69 - Managers have provided no information or plans on training employees on value stream
mapping and waste identification. Many managers probably are not aware of the importance of the
value stream map in the quest for process improvement, especially in sustaining any improvements.
Regular training sessions should begin.

<59 - Managers have not committed any resources or efforts in communicating to employees the value
of the value stream map and waste identification. Top management must assign a team or steering
committee to create a plan for using value stream mapping, where appropriate. Managers should be
held accountable for creating value stream maps to be used for waste identificationa and elimination.
