WRIT 121 Revision Assignment

Ganna Simovskykh N01243720

A Summary of “Professional development for nurses”.

In the article “New research offers insights into professional development” (2018), Canadian

Nurse from Pollara Strategic Insights discusses professional development (PD) in nursing and

describes the results from an online survey of 1,387 individuals. According to Pollara vice-

president Lesli Martin (2018) the survey includes RNs and 15 nurse leaders who have reported

that most of them participate in PD on their own to become more knowledgeable and

professional. Also the survey demonstrates that all of them were involved in PD at least once in

the past year. Next, Martin (2018), found that PD topic selection is based on the number of years

of practice and the area of work respectively. The interest of professional development is

increasing with experience; nurses are more interested in educational rather than in practical

skills.

Then, Martin (2018), argues that according to the survey, cost and time are the biggest

difficulties for nurses to be involved in PD, however, many nurses are ready to devote their free

time and money. In addition, the support from the nurses’ employers is an important factor for

them. As per Canadian Nurse (2018), nurse leaders take PD into consideration when looking for

candidates for a new job position. Perspective candidates who have completed courses related to

practice and with interest in learning are in the priority. Furthermore, hiring organizations tend to

cover costs spent on PD by nurses and provide leave.

Most of the respondents who were involved in the research had 20 years of experience of full

time work with responsibilities in direct care with less number of respondents working in

education and administration.
