The Innovation and Celebrating The Honorable Birth of The Prophet (Mawlid)
The Innovation and Celebrating The Honorable Birth of The Prophet (Mawlid)
Praise be to God the Creator of the world, the One Who exists without beginning,
without end, without location , without a “how” and Who does not depend on time.
Nothing resembles Him in anyway and He hears and sees everything without organs.
Whatever you imagine, God is different from that. May the elevation in degree and
preservation of his community of what he fears for it, be granted to our master
MuHammad Al-‘Amin, the Honest One, who called for following Islam, the religion of
truth, the religion of all the Prophets: of the First, Adam, to the last MuHammad.
The meaning of ( ) َما َكتَب َن َها َع َلي ِهمis that although it was not ordained upon them, they did
the practice of « al-Rahbaniyyah » seeking the reward from Allâh the Exalted. Allâh
praised them for that innovation which was not mentioned in the original Injîl, and was
not even mentioned by `Isâ peace be upon him; but rather they did it out of being devoted
obedient slaves of Allâh ta`âlâ. They left out being involved in marriage and what
follows that of raising kids and family support, so they used to build Sawami` (monastery
cells) from clay in the secluded spots of the country away from people which will allow
them to dedicate themselves to worshipping Allâh. Allâh called that an innovation and He
praised it, so this verse is an indication of the good innovation; it also indicates that not
every innovation is an innovation of misguidance.

Dear Muslims, know that the innovation is every practice that was innovated which
was neither mentioned in the Qur’ân nor in the sayings of the Prophet, Sallallâhu `alayhi
wa sallam. Nevertheless it is divided into two types: Innovation of guidance and
innovation of misguidance, and this is indicated in the Hadîth which was related by Imam
Muslim through the route of Jarir Ibn `Abdullâh Al-Bajliyy who mentioned that the
Prophet said:
There are two types of innovations mentioned in this Hadîth: the innovations of
guidance and the innovations of misguidance. What complies with the Qur’ân, the
Sunnah, the Ijma` (scholarly consensus), and the sayings and practices of the
Companions is an innovation of guidance, and what contradicts the Qur’ân, the Sunnah,
the Ijma`, and the sayings and actions of the Companions is an innovation of
misguidance. This definition of the two types of innovations was given by many
knowledgeable and trustworthy scholars of Islam; among them Imam ash-Shafi`iyy.
Also another proof, among what was innovated after the prophet and that it is an
innovation of guidance, is that during the Caliphate of `Umar Ibnu Al-Khattab, `Umar
initiated the gathering of people in RamaDân to pray the Tarawih Prayer in congregation.
When he saw the people performing this prayer in congregation he said:
It means: « What a good innovation that is! ». The high status of `Umar Ibnul
Khattab is known, thus it is important to point out `Umar used the explicit term «
innovation » in praising the congregational Tarawih. If all innovations were pertaining to
misguidance-as some claim-`Umar would not have innovated this practice, nor expressed
this praise. This was mentioned by Al-Bukhâriyy.
Among the good innovations which complies with the Religion is celebrating the birth
of the Prophet (Mawlid un-Nabiyy) in the month of Rabi` al-awwal. It was initiated
hundreds of years after the Prophet, Sallallâhu `alayhi wa salam, and it was not opposed
by the scholars.
The honorable, knowledgeable, and righteous ruler: al-Mudhaffar, the King of Irbil
(city in the country of present day Iraq), initiated this practice about 900 years ago, and
he was praised by Muslim scholars of Islam-among them the Egyptian hafidhs: Ibn Hajar
al-`Asqalaniyy and Jalal ud-Din as-Suyutiyy. The famous scholar of Hadîth, Abul-
Khattab Ibn Dihyah, wrote a book for the king especially to be read during the Mawlid
celebration, and there are no great Muslim scholars who dispraised this innovated
celebration.
O slaves of Allâh I order you and myself with piety and God fearingness, and I warn
you from His punishment and urge you to seek His acceptance.

O slaves of Allâh I remind you that Allâh has ordered you with a great matter, He
ordered you with saying as-Salah and as-salam for His choicest and most honorable
Prophet; Allâh said in sârat Al-AHzâb, ‘âyah 56:

O Allâh raise the rank of Prophet MuHammad and increase his prestige and honor and
protect his nation from what he fears for them, the same as you bestowed on Ibrâhîm and
the family members of Ibrâhîm, O Allâh you are the Praised and Glorified one.
This verse means: « Allâh raises the rank of the Prophet and grants him safety
from what he fears for his nation, and His Angels say As-salah for the Prophet; O
you who believed do say As-salah and As-salam for the prophet many times. »
O Allâh we have made a supplication to you so answer our supplication and forgive
our sins and forgive that we have done injustice to ourselves. O Allâh forgive the sins of
the believers, male and female, those who are alive and those who have died. O Allâh
bestow upon us goodness in this world and in the Hereafter and protect us from Hellfire.
O Allâh make us guided and among those who guide others and do not make us
misguided and do not make us among those who misguide others. O Allâh cover our
short comings and comfort our fears and make us satisfied toward our burdens and
protect us from the evil of what we fear.
O slaves of Allâh, know that Allâh orders you to do justice, benevolence and to be
kind to your kin, and forbids you to commit vileness, unlawful matters and injustice, and
admonishes you so you may remember. Do remember Allâh the Magnificent and Allâh
will take care of you, do thank Him and He will increase your endowments, do ask Him
to forgive you and He will forgive you, and be God-fearing and He will guide you out of
your hardships.
