At some point in their production life, a majority of the wells need to be artificially lifted in order to

maintain optimized production. Today, Sucker Rod Pumps (SRPs) constitute 90% of the artificial lift
technologies employed by companies. Monitoring these SRPs manually is a tedious job for production
engineers. Common problems encountered while monitoring these SRPs include fluid pounding, gas
interference, rod snapping, high load span, leakage of valves and various mechanical failures.

Automating Sucker Rod Pumps comes as a much needed rescue as it helps in monitoring and mitigating
the above mentioned problems by making this process more user-friendly. This case study is conducted
on a field comprising of 25 producing wells which shows how a continuous monitoring through
automation helped to reduce downtime by keying out problems due to electrical faults which is
common occurrence in most of the Indian fields during monsoon season. The runtime of the wells were
significantly brought down based on wellbore fillage keeping the production to an optimized level.

This case study reveals how an efficient real time monitoring of load on rods and inferred production
helped in prevention of sucker rod parting and helped to achieve optimized production. Analyzing wells
through the Dynacards, especially calculated Downhole Pump Cards, Pump-off and Failure cards
provided the regular health report of the wells.

Through this case study how the continuous monitoring of SRPs and the recommendations based on
them helped in preparing the workover jobs and led to an increased optimized production. This case
study is a success story of an effective utilization of automation in production optimization in SRP wells
in India.
