Banknote Validator
Appendix B
B GLOSSARY
A
1 Anti-stringing Mechanism
a mechanism (optical, mechanical, or a combintion of both) designed to prevent the un-
authorized retrieving of Banknotes from a Cash Box ... 1-6
B
2 Bezel
a removable Plastic Assembly attached to the front of the Banknote Insertion Slot on a
VEGA Unit. It features a rectangular shaped access opening (slot) for easy insertion and
retrieval of Banknotes. Bezels are available in different shapes and sizes in order to ac-
commodate Banknotes of different widths and different stacking configurations ... 1-

C
3 Calibration
a process performed on electronic equipment which ensures that all circuits are proper-
ly aligned and operating at optimum levels. For VEGA, calibration is accomplished us-
ing a software based program which checks and sets the operational reference levels for
Intake Sensors, Validation Sensors, and Edge Sensors. This helps to ensure that the Unit
operates with the highest Banknote acceptance rate possible. Calibration is recom-
mended whenever the CPU Board or one of the Sensor Boards is replaced ... 6-4
4 ccTalk
a Serial based Communications Protocol commonly used in control, electronic pay-
ment, and vending systems. Developed by Money Controls Ltd., the format enjoys
widespread use throughout Europe. ccTalk is a supported communications format in
the VEGA Unit ... 1-6
5 Course Path Reversing Guide
a movable guide located at the rear Section of the Banknote Transport Path in a VE-
GA™ Unit which allows Banknotes to be directed down to the VEGA™ Cash Box, up
to the optional VEGA-RC™ Recycler, or back to the customer as part of change-return-
ing or recycling operations. The removable Course Path Reversing Guide Cover con-
tains optical Lenses which help the VEGA™ Unit determine if any Banknotes or debris
are stuck in the transport area path ... 1-5
6 CRC Checksum
a numerical value assigned to a data file or block of data (usually expressed in hexadec-
imal notation). Check sum values are used to verify that the contents of a data file are
not corrupted in any way during transmission or encryption. The Checksum values of
both the original and duplicate files are compared to each other. If the values match,
then the duplicate file is considered to be acceptable. In instances where the Checksum

values DO NOT match, it is recommended that file be copied or encrypted again until
the Checksums do agree. CRC Checksum algorithms use a mathematical polynomial
division technique, which is highly accurate and can detect data errors down to a bit ...
6-3
E
7 EEPROM
an acronym for Electronically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory. A form of
non-volatile Read Only Memory (ROM) which can be both written to, and erased via
electronic signals without the need to physically remove the IC from the Circuit Board
on which it is installed. EEPROM are often used to store system command instructions
and reference data sets that are succeeded on a frequent basis or when the equipment is
first initialized ... 6-5
8 Encryption Code
with respect to the VEGA Banknote Validator, encryption coding is used with the
ccTalk Communications Protocol to enhance security of its transmitted data. The de-
fault encryption code value used is the Serial Number of the VEGA Unit itself. The user
has the option to specify another encryption code value if desired ... 6-13
H
9 Hydrothermal
with respect to weather, it is a measurement of both the amount of hear (temperature)
and the amount of moisture (humidity) present in an equipment operating environment.
This may effect the operating temperature range of the VEGA™ Banknote Validator
... 1-7
L
10 LED
an acronym for Light Emitting Diode. An LED is a Semiconductor Device which when
turned on, emits a signal output in the visible light range. Available in a variety of col-
ors, LEDs are cost effective and are commonly used as Indicator Lights in a variety of
equipment devices. LEDs are also available in the invisible light range (i.e., ultraviolet,
near-infrared etc.) making them useful as operational indicators for a variety of elec-
tronic equipment and applications, such as Banknote Validation Circuits in the VEGA
Unit ... 1-6
11 Limited Power Source
an electronic circuit designed to prevent damage to a Power Supply in the event a short
circuit occurs ... 1-4
M
12 Magnetic Sensor
a Sensor located in the Banknote Validator’s Transport Path used to detect the presence
of Magnetic Ink found on Banknote denominations created by certain Countries ... 1-6
13 Magnetic-ink
special ink used by certain Country’s in the production and printing of their Banknotes

as a deterrent to counterfeiting. In United States Currency, the Black Ink used on the
front side of the Banknote is Magnetically Metal impregnated. Banknote Validators
(like the VEGA) utilize Magnetic Sensors in their Transport Path in order to detect and
read the Magnetic Ink Pattern density level ... 1-6
P
14 Photo-coupler
a method of increasing safety to both the equipment and personnel by isolating and
routing transmitted data signals vie a Light Emitting Diode (LED) and a Photosensitive
Transistor combination circuit in various electronic equipment devices ... 1-6
15 Pictograph
small, internationally-recognized safety and attention symbols placed to the left of
Notes, Cautions and Warnings throughout a JCM Maintenance Manual ... 1-1
16 Precautions
special instructions warnings that appear in JCM Maintenance Manuals. They are in-
tended to promote personal safety and prevent damage to equipment when working
with the applicable JCM Product ... 1-3
R
17 Radio Button
a term used as reference to an On-Screen selection Button (usually circular in shape)
which can be selected or de-select by clicking on it with a Computer Mouse. Radio But-
tons are frequently used in desktop based applications to allow the user to enable or se-
lect specific program functions or features ... 6-1
18 Recycler
The VEGA-RC Twin, an optional add-on device for the VEGA Banknote Validator.
The Recycler adds additional capability and functionality to the VEGA Unit by stack-
ing, storing, and recycling Banknotes back to the customer on demand. These features
are particularly useful during cash transactions and vending operations ... 1-2
19 Reference Paper
specially coated/colored paper strips which are inserted into a Banknote Validator when
performing VEGA Unit Calibration. Reference Paper is used to help set minimum and
maximum threshold detection levels when adjusting the Photo-optical Sensors in the
unit for optimum performance. The paper is usually available in two shades ... 6-4
20 RFID
an acronym for Radio Frequency IDentification ... 1-2
S
