Accident Prevention
• Accident may be defined as an unplanned and unexpected event that is likely to cause
injury.

• The accidents may be caused by unsafe actions and unsafe mechanical or physical
conditions

• They can be prevented by correction of unsafe conditions.

• An accident occurred in the hotel can spoil the goodwill of the hotel .

• It is difficult to quantify the multidimensional loss in the form of pain, loss of life, sales
decline due to negative publicity.

General approaches

• Inspections- To be scheduled regularly so that inspectors have


clear idea of potentially hazardous situations.

• They can identify and correct immediately or report dangerous


conditions.

• Preventive Maintenance- It is similar to inspections, the


equipment that might cause accident & the equipment that can
help prevent the accidents should be checked and maintained.

• Policies: Rules that indicate how work has to be done based on


standard safety practices to prevent accidents.

• Construction- It refers to the construction of the plant using


materials and methods that will prevent accidents and effective
response in case of accident.
• Equipment – Equipment that will help detect or deal with
emergency situation can be acquired.

• Training- Trained employees can help to respond to emergencies


effectively.

• Contacting and assisting emergency service providers

• Investigation: These come into play after an accident has


occurred. Investigating the causes can assist in preventing the
reoccurrence of such accidents.

Fundamental Approaches
• Even the sound prevention program cannot stop all accidents, it is
necessary to prepare to react to dangerous conditions.

• Employees to be motivated to correct or report about the conditions that


can cause hazards.

• They must have some authority to take action to avoid potential accidents.

• If the accidents stay below pre determined level then success at avoidance
can be rewarded.

• Caused accident if not corrected can cause another accident.


Reaction to emergencies
• Employees to react immediately and appropriately in a stressful
situation.

• The required action may be simple but may not be carried out as
the person panics.

• Training allows reacting correctly on an instinctive basis.

Slips & Falls


• Caused due to slippery floor in walkways.

• In kitchens the floor can be slippery due to spillage of oil, water etc

• Faulty design of the facility.

• Prevention :

• Regular inspection to identify and correct hazards viz. obstructed pathways,


etc

• Design of physical facility has profound effect on number and severity of


accidents.

• Handrail to be provided on staircases.

• Anti skid arrangements to be provided at the end of stairs, in bathroom,


engine room and other places where necessary.

• Preventive maintenance of different equipments can prevent accidents viz.


leakage of water from ice machines, leaking roofs or any other equipments
must be identified and repaired on priority basis.
• First aid to be kept available for emergencies and employees to be trained
in job related safety techniques.

Cuts and burns


• Cuts are caused by sharp objects like knives, scissors, etc.

• Burns are caused by contact with hot surfaces like hot ovens, cooking
utensils, etc.

• Prevention :

• Personal alertness is most important for preventing cuts & burns.

• First aid box to be there in operational areas.

• Safety signs to be displayed near the equipments like boilers to prevent


accidents.

Fire
• Cigarettes account for huge number of fires in hotels.

• Short circuit and kitchen fires are other major causes of fire.

• Prevention:

• Regular inspections to be conducted to identify potential hazards and situations that can
lead to fire.

• All emergency equipments should receive preventive maintenance care and should be
in working condition if any emergency arises.

• Preventive maintenance of cooking, ventilation, transportation electrical and other


equipments in general.

• Designing and construction plays a role to determine how far the fire will spread.
• Proper exit facilities to be provided.

• Training of staff in notification, initial suppression, evacuation and cooperation with fire
fighters.

• Fire drills to be carried out regularly.

• finally it also involves working with fire fighters when they arrive to help them in
locating the fire and crowd control.

Security Emergencies
• It refers to protection against threats to guests and employees.

• It’s a breach of security if a guest is robbed, assaulted or caused any such harm while
legitimately staying in our property.

• Its our duty to prevent such incidents and react appropriately when they occur.

• Following are some important security measures to be taken by hotel authorities:

• Delivery vans of service providers to be checked.

• Baggage scanners and metal detectors are now universally used.

• Installation of surveillance cameras is now mandatory .

• Security guards to be employed round the clock.

• All the visitors to be properly screened.

• Emergency numbers to be displayed in lobby.

• Adequate lighting in lobby, corridors and other places.

• Design to limit access to legitimate persons only.

• Frequent inspection in sensitive areas by specialist to find out the security gaps.

• Employees to be trained to inform security personnel of any suspicious activities.


Security equipments
• Can be divided into two types:

1. For preventing unauthorized access to an area.

• Electronic locking system.

2. To detect the presence of unauthorized people.

• CCTV

• Baggage Scanners

• Metal detectors

• Weapons for the security guards.
