adolescence. Sustained high volume lifetime reading has been associated with high levels of academic
attainment. A student has guided English alphabetical writing system means he/she will be a good reader in
English. Even though quite accurate estimated can be made on the basis of known risk factors, it is still difficult

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents some relevant literature and studies which are closely related to the
present study. The researcher was properly guided in formulating problems and hypothesis based from the
studies here in cited which are supported by studies local and abroad.

LOCAL LITERATURE
According to Juan Miguel Cruz (2007), despite our supposedly high literacy rate, many Filipinos
can barely read and write. this is true especially of those living in remote areas as well as the remarked that
we are not a nation of readers: are a nation of story tellers. ours is a culture of oral history passed by word of
youth not through the written word.

Many educators believe that failure of the child in formal education can be traced to his reading
difficulties. These difficulties hinder him to succeed in school work returning the reading process. This problem
prompted researchers to conduct studies in reading.

FOREIGN LITERATURE

According to the studies done by the western scholars, it is proven that literature helped
students in learning languages. English literature writers such as brim-full and carter(1986), Carter and
Long(1991), Lazar (1993) and Collie and Slater (1990) stated that learning literature might be helping and
encouraging in learning English. They agreed to the ideas of saying that there are some literatures intrinsic
values because a great work of literature is consists of the language characteristics, in term of semantically or
pragmatically. By reading literature texts in English, students would be able improve their social knowledge,
building morality, values of humanities and aesthetic. In order to get the students to learn good moral values,
by modelling the good characters from the text, they need to learn and listen to the stories carefully and
thoroughly. Therefore social problems and disciplinary caused matters would be able to curb.
In Malaysia, as we live in a multi-cultural society. As it goes well the National Education
fundamentals, to integrate the process of educating and uniting all the races in the country. So that we can
create that great work of art with qualities. From here, we would be able to cultivate the interest of loving the
cultures at the same time help the students to contribute their creativity in literature studies. The effort of
teaching effective literature in English would bring to the community of appreciating great literature works. At
the same time, there would be critics, the producers and the publishers of the creative works where we can
upgrade the level of literature studies in schools to a professional level. The concepts and theories of literature
that connect with a few approaches such as sociology approaches that has been used by the writers in
analysing some works of art could be used by the students.

Theoretical Framework
The studies and literature reviewed will contribute much in the construction
and validation of the instrument, in sampling method and the statistical tools to be used. The related
literature and studies kindled the passion of the researcher to developthe pre* reading skills among the
pupils through phonemic awareness. Developing the phonemic a w a r e n e s s s k i l l s m u s t , i n d e e d ,

foundation must be strong and firm enough for the pupils to be able to tackle future
uncertainties and challenges which surely lay ahead of these promising elementary pupils.8ore
learning lessons must be prepared to improve the pupils reading comprehension in the
elementary level because the task of preparation of instructional materials cannot be

which will help develop the reading comprehension skills of 0rade ' pupils. This is the gap that the study
will bridge and hopefully, will
succeed. The phonemic awareness instruction, the reading comprehension skills of the pupils will beenh

developed, high school and college work would >ust be a stride for them in their pursuit of higher and
more advanced learning thus, producing individuals who will be agents of change and
movers towards development.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

This research is a development research which aimed to produce teaching materials of the
drama appreciation based on local wisdom on the students of the Indonesia literature and language
education Faculty of Teacher and the Education Muhammadiyah University of Makassar which is valid,
practical and effective. This is a Research and Development (R & D) study by using 4-D model of
development Thiagarajan through stages: assessment or initial tracing of topics that will be constructed
or reconstructed; development of teaching materials products from the findings that has been achieved;
experimental material trial testers that have been developed at the research site and the product
will be used improvement of teaching materials in accordance with the findings in the preliminary
situation in the field. The results of the research are The teaching materials product of drama
appreciation based on Bugis Makassar local wisdom is valid because the average validity of the
validation result of the material expert M = 3.54 is in the "Very Valid" class.

PARADIGM OF THE STUDY

This article identifies three paradigms in creativity theory and research in psychology. The He-
paradigm, focused on the solitary genius, has been followed, mainly after the 1950s, by the I-paradigm,
equally individualistic in nature but attributing creativity to each and every individual. Extending this view, the
Weparadigm incorporates what became known as the social psychology of creativity. The cultural psychology
of creativity builds upon this last theoretical approach while being critical of some of its assumptions. This
relatively new perspective, using the conceptual and methodological framework of cultural psychology,
investigates the sociocultural roots and dynamics of all our creative acts and employs a tetradic framework of
self – community – new artifact – existing artifacts in its conceptualization of creativity. The theoretical basis
of the cultural psychology approach is analyzed as well as some of its main implications for both the
understanding and study of creativity.
CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY

The review of related literature is an essential step in any research project. It is a survey of the
current status of research works already done. Its main function is to provide background information on the
research question and to identify what others have said or discovered about the question. Carried out
systematically, the literature review acquaints the researcher with previous work in the field and alerts him to
problems and potential pitfalls in the chosen area.

RESEARCH DESIGN

This chapter dealt with description, research design, respondents, instruments, procedures, and
statistical tools used in this study. This study utilized the descriptive method of research, which identified the
reading difficulties of grade three pupils in six selected schools of District IV, Division of manila.

SAMPLING TECHNIQUES
RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

To gather the data for this study, a carefully structured questionnaire to elicit the necessary information that
will help determine whether instructional materials exercise some basic effects on students’ performance in
social studies in secondary schools in Etung Local Government Area was designed.

DATA COLLECTION

The variables analyzed in the study are presented according to Subjects (Tina and Anunu); Languages and
Modalities (L1 reading, L2 reading, FL reading; L1 writing, L2 writing, FL writing). The transcripts of the subjects
Think-aloud Protocols and the Strategies Questionnaires revealed similarities as well as differences regarding
the information on strategies applied to their reading and writing in each of the three languages (L1, L2, FL).

VALIDITY OF THE INSTRUMENTS

To ensure that each item selected for inclusion in the questionnaire were capable to eliciting responses
needed to measure the set objectives for the study, the items were submitted to my supervisor an experts in
the field for scrutiny in which a final approval was given for the retention of the instrument as being valid in
both face and content.
