Play It As It Lays
I’m taking care of this little girl named Kate when her mother decides to show up out of
nowhere. I hate it when she doesn’t call beforehand so I tell her, “You should always call before
you come”. I try to tell her about her daughters medication but she rudely interrupts me by
asking about what the new medication is. I very much doubt that she even has any knowledge on
medicine but I tell her anyways that it’s “Methylphenidate hydrochloride”. Just as I expected, she
doesn’t seem to know what that is and just closes her eyes and asks me what my point is. I tell
her that “We definitely would have suggested you wait until next week” and she tells me that she
won’t be here next week because she is going to be in Mexico. After she tells me that she leaves
but then comes back to say goodbye to her daughter again. At this point I am running out of
patience and I think that’s the last time I’m going to see her but, lo and behold, she comes back
another time. The third time she comes back she tells me “One thing. You know when she wakes
up at night and says ‘oise, oise,’ it means she’s…”. She doesn’t even finish her sentence and just
keeps quiet. At this point she looks like she’s in her own world and I feel like can’t be any more
annoyed than I am right now. When she comes back to reality she tells me that’s what her
daughter says when she’s having a nightmare and I just look at her with no emotion on my face. I
hope that she gets the message and I tell her that I’m sure that she’s said that to me before and
