Understanding the Self

The PBE model which stands for person, behaviour and environment is theorized
by Albert Bandura. In my understanding, the model explains that the behaviour of an
individual can and will be affected by personal factors and environmental elements, and
vice versa. This model talks about the interactions between an individual and the situation
that they are in. Just like for example, Liz has interest in joining the volleyball team and
because of that, she joins the volleyball team. As a result, she spends a lot of time with
volleyball players. This explains that her cognition of having interest in joining the volleyball
team leads her to joining the team, entering a new environment. And the people you hang
out with is a factor of a behavioural change. But it can be ordered differently. For example,
Liz hangs out with volleyball players. And of course, they will talk a lot about volleyball.
And she starts getting interested in volleyball so as a result, she joins the team. So in this
example, it explains that the behaviour can lead to a cognition and which leads her to a
certain environment. We can also follow the pattern in the opposite direction. Again, for
example, Liz keeps hanging out with the volleyball players. And because she wants to be
with them all the time, she decided to join the team. And as time passes by, she then
realize that she eventually has an interest in playing volleyball. So behaviour leads to
environment and it also leads to cognition. Bandura argues that a person must drown first
before they will learn how to swim. A person must observe a model in swimming in order
to learn the basics of swimming. As a student, this theory has been applied to my life. For
example, I’ve been really frustrated and hopeless because of my exam results. But
because of my classmates who have failed the exam also, they strived hard and studied
more. I observed their studying techniques which motivated me to apply it to myself for
me to pass my future exams.
