ABSTARCT

Mobile phones are the most valuable one in today’s world. This hand sized products needed for
every category of people like Youngsters, Adults, Women and Students. Formerly, the only
function of mobile was the ‘mean of communication’ but now the function of mobile has
developed into Entertainment. Due to Mobile phones we can stay in constant touch with Friends,
secure business deals, setup meetings, call for immediate help in emergencies, talk overseas.
Mobile phones have vastly increased the flow of information in Society. But Mobile phones
addiction is becoming more and more problematic these days because most students whether
from higher sections or lower sections are getting addicted to applications found on Smartphones
like WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook etc. The Aim of this study is to to assess the mobile phone
usage pattern and its negative effects on psychological health, and academic performance of
students. A descriptive study was conducted on a total of 100 Undergraduate students aged
between 15 to 25 years and a total of 100 Graduated students aged between 25 to 35 years who
were using Mobile phones for atleast 2 and more than two years. They were requested to fill up a
specifically designed Questionnare that comprised details of their pattern of using mobile phones
and its effects on their psychological health, and mainly on their academic performance. The data
collected were statistically analyzed.
