FINLAND – POSITION PAPER

Political committee

Population: ≈ 5,5 million

GDP: 251,9 billions USD (2017)

On the topic: Asserting national sovereignty and security through internet firewalls
following China’s model.

This kind of method puts in danger the on-line sovereignty and freedom of the
people. Finland’s position on this topic is a mistrustful one. China is using this rule
just for keeping its population under control, not caring about the private life of its
citizens. If this tool will be developed also in other states there will be no choice
between freedom and security, but between who controls the internet. Besides the
“non-private” life of the citizens, another disadvantages would be:

- the mistakes made by the government or by the leaders of the country will be
hidden

- it prevents people from acknowledging more.

As a conclusion, this type of method is truly unfair for the people and it violates
their rights.

On the topic : Addressing the threats of national unilateralism as rejection of

international organisations and standards.

Many people think that unilateralism means patriotism or it is a form of patriotism,

but, obviously it is not. This doctrine supports just one-sided actions, many times
being harmful, instigating a frustrating and malicious state which can go far. How
far? It can ignite a war. Countries that adopt the unilateralism may be punished by
the “United Nations”. The solution of solving problems and arguments between
countries is just the opposite side of unilateralism, the multilateralism. The
unilateralism creates many disadvantages, even for the countries that adopt it or for
their citizens:
- The country concerned will not be able to enjoy the help received from other
countries in certain areas.
- There will be no evolution in certain areas too. This can harm also harm the
tourism.
- The unilateralism can ignite a riot supported by that country’s inhabitants.

On the topic : Dealing with separatist movements worldwide while enforcing

national integrity.

This delegate thinks that the separatist movements are useless and
impractical. It will surely be hard for the “new-state” to depart from the
“mother-state” and to create and maintain the public order. As a result, the
new-state will have to face many problems:
- New laws and rules will have to be written.
- The new-state will not benefit from the help of the mother-state.
- There will be more conflicts than in the past.
- It will be a lengthy process that will probably not worth.
As a conclusion, the problem of separatist movements should target a trade
between the two sides which will solve it peacefully.
