Description
New capabilities available from next-generation satellite remote sensing instruments offer the unique opportunity to
observe and gain a greater understanding of dynamic and thermodynamic processes related to high-impact weather
events.  Previous studies have demonstrated the ability of hyperspectral infrared sounders (Aqua AIRS and S-NPP
CrIS) to capture the microphysical properties of clouds and the ability to characterize the thermodynamics of the pre-
convective environment. However, limitations in fully representing the boundary layer (BL) through satellite sounding
retrieval algorithms still exist.  Accurate representation of BL temperature and moisture characteristics in satellite
sounding retrievals is integral to climate and weather process studies that depend on temperature, moisture, and
cloud interaction and feedbacks.  A desired outcome of this research are techniques to improve BL representation in
NASA satellite sounding retrieval algorithms (e.g., NOAA Unique Combined Atmospheric Processing System based
on AIRS Science Team Algorithm version 5.9 and the Community Long-term Infrared Microwave Combined
Atmospheric Product System) for the benefit of science process studies, applications, and transition of research to
operations activities in collaboration with NASA's Short-term Prediction Research and Transition (SPoRT) Center at
Marshall Space Flight Center. This opportunity seeks candidates with experience in processing and analysis of
remote sensing, meteorological data sets, and algorithm development. More details on SPoRT's mission and current
projects can be found on our website at https://weather.msfc.nasa.gov/sport.
