Most of this air pollution we cause results from the burning of fossil fuels,

such as coal, oil, natural gas, and gasoline to produce electricity and
power our vehicles. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a good indicator of how much
fossil fuel is burned and how much of other pollutants are emitted as a result.
Air pollution and the release of gasses into the atmosphere can have many
negative effects on the environment such as global warming, thinning of
ozone layer and acid rain. Air pollution can also make people sick. It can
make it difficult to breathe and cause diseases such as lung cancer,
respiratory infections, and heart disease. According to the World Health
Organization, 2.4 million people die each year from air pollution. Air
pollution can be especially dangerous to children living in big cities with
bad smog.
