Introduction
Empowerment Technology is an academic subject which educates students about the
use of technology. Technology helps people in different aspects of life, such as
communication. It makes communication more effective, reliable, and convenient.
Empowerment technology is being thought in school to create foundation in understanding the
world of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies), understand and demonstrate
the proper etiquette in using ICT and more. (De Lara, 2016).
E-Tech introduces the students to “Online”; a state of being connected to a computer
or other gadgets on a computer network through a medium of internet. The use of the internet
is not only limited to surfing web and communication, but it also provides users with tools,
information, services, and resources which are called Online Platforms. It is a specially
developed platform using internet technology.
The online platform has changed access to information. We can get information and
education from the internet. It provides us with different sites and blogs that give us
informative content which will help us learn various things. The four examples of online
platforms are Social Media, E-Commerce, Online Learning, and Online Video.
In Social Media, users can make, modify, and manage their accounts. Users can post
or upload their pictures, comments, and feedback as long as they are connected to the internet.
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube are some of the best examples of Social media
platform that are widely used in the country. Additionally, people can sell their products
through E-Commerce. It is also known as an online selling platform. Zaful, Lazada, and
Shopee are examples of E-Commerce.
Another online platform is called Online learning, where modules and other learning
tools are uploaded into a web page or browser. This has made learning more accessible and
beneficial for the students. Some schools provide accessible online modules for their students
to maximize their learning progression. The examples of online learning are Alison, Udacity,
and Open2study. The last online platform is Online Video; a web-based technology where
users can create, customize, and publish videos online. It is the general field that deals with the
transmission of video over the internet. Life hacks, tutorials, vlogs are the usual content of an
online video.
 Empowerment Technology also discusses ICT (Information and Communication of
Technology). ICT is an umbrella that includes any communication device or application. It is
also used to refer the convergence of audiovisual and telephone networks with computer
networks through a single cabling link or system. Radio, television, cellular phones, computer,
network hardware, and software satellite system are examples of ICT (Information and
Communication of Technology. The three types of ICT are Assistive Media, Mobile Media,
and Social Media.
The Assistive media is produced to help people with disabilities to access computers
and technology. The examples of assistive media are audio players, recorders, and hearing aids.
The next one is Mobile Media that refers to media devices such as phones and PDA’s (Personal
Digital Assistant) that used for storing and organizing information. It is where the primary
source of portable media is from, where we can obtain information and communication with
one another. Social media is popular with students nowadays. It allows people to exchange
information, career interest, ideas, pictures, and videos in virtual communities and networks.
In this subject, the evolution of the web is also discussed. There are three evolutions of the
web. They are called the Web 1.0, Web 2.0 and Web 3.0.
The first web is Web 1.0, this is a readable phrase of the world wide web with flat data.
It is simply an information portal where users passively receive information without being
given the opportunity to post, review, comment, and feedback. The second web is Web 2.0,
this is the writable phrase of the world wide web with interactive data. It allows users to interact
more freely with other users. Examples of Web 2.0 applications are YouTube, Wiki, Facebook,
and so on. And lastly, Web 3.0 is the executable phrase in the world wide web with dynamic
applications, interactive services, and “machine-to-machine” interaction. One example of this
is Tivo, a digital video recorder, its recording program can search the web and read what it
finds to you based on your preferences.
Empowerment Technology also talks about the rules and etiquette in using the internet,
which they call as Netiquette. These rules and netiquettes will help the students or other users
to know their do’s and don’ts in using the technology or the internet. They will be aware of
their limitations if they are in cyberspace. Empowerment Technology will help us know the
basic and appropriate ways of using technology. This generation is advance when it comes to
technology. They have discovered an innovative way to improve the student's and user’s life.
II. Impression

The students' impressions on this subject are different. They do not have the same
understanding of the topic. Some of them may think that this subject is difficult but some
may think this is easy. The student thinks that this subject is difficult because they do not
know a lot in ICT (Information and Communication of Technology) or Empowerment
Technology and others are not interested in this kind of topic. They think that this subject
has a lot of memorizing and understanding because it is a broad topic that can give them
a headache. If the students do not have ideas or interest, they will struggle in the activities
included in this subject and it may result that they will not cooperate or listen during the
class discussions. While if the students say that this subject is easy it is because there is a
chance that they have prior knowledge about it and they are interested in learning this
subject. It would be easier for the students if they have an idea about it. This knowledge
will help them in activities and class discussions. If the students show interest in the
subject, he/she is willing to learn more. But despite all the lessons and struggles, students
must be ready to take the risk in learning this subject. They must not lose hope that they
are going to pass this subject. With all of the hardships and efforts of the student, this can
have a good result in their grades and also in their learnings.

III. Experience

In studying this subject, students learn how to empower their knowledge and
skills about technologies. Students may experience some difficulties from the start, but as
they continue in learning Empowerment Technologies, they will realize that it is fun
learning discoveries about technologies. This subject is really necessary for students
because they can use it in their studies and other stuff. They are very open when it comes
to the topic of technology. Many of the students have prior knowledge about technology
and they are lucky if they have a subject like this. This subject is very complex because it
was too broad. Teachers can teach students many things about Empowerment
Technologies. This subject is not like any other subject because it deals with technology
 and also how can technology help people. The technology has an advantage and
disadvantage for students. The advantage of this is it can help students with their studies.
Doing their homework, projects, and performance task is much easier if they use the
technology and the internet. Communication is now very easy because of technology and
the internet. Even the person we are contacting is far away we can communicate with
them right away. On the internet, students can gather information on a topic that they are
searching for. If they search it in Google Chrome, the page will give them a lot of results
with different answers to their questions. And the disadvantage of technology and the
internet is that it makes people lazy. They depend on the technologies in doing their
work. Students are not relying on books or they do not read books because they like to
just search on the internet. Sometimes, the internet is the main cause of bullying
nowadays that is called cyberbullying. They use the internet to bully or to make fun of
other people.

IV. Expectations

It is expected to have hands-on activities on the computer to accumulate and

always remember those topics that will be discussed by the teacher. Empowerment
Technology may satisfy the needs of computer literacy and gain new knowledge to the
global standards in terms of Information and Communication of Technology (ICT).
Students expected a lot of work, discussions, and stuffs to do.

V. Suggestions

To make the student enjoy the discussion in Empowerment Technology, teachers

can provide activities that will challenge the knowledge and skills of the students. It must
be beneficial for students and can help them enhance their skills in using technology. They
also need activities that use the Microsoft Office like Microsoft Word and Microsoft
PowerPoint so that they can improve in using those. Learning is more enjoying if the
students do not feel pressured. Giving activities that are not hard and lessen them will be
good for the students. Teachers must pay attention to the health of the students. Lots of
 activities and performance tasks have a big effect on their health because some of them are
not eating at the right time and do not have enough sleep just to finish the activities given
to them. They spent a lot of hours doing their activities and they forget to pay attention to
themselves. In making a presentation, students like colorful and interesting slides. It must
catch the student’s attention so that they cannot feel bored during the discussions. Adding
audio and other effects on the presentation will be helpful. Giving students notes so that
they have a reviewer for that subject. The notes must include important details about the
lesson and some keywords that are helpful to students if they are going to review. They
can easily understand and remember the lesson because of their notes.

VI. Learnings

Teachers need to know if the students are learning from his/her. To have proper
communication they have to experiment or think an effective tool to do it. Nowadays,
students are more interested in social life with the presence of the latest technologies. Some
students are not paying attention if there are no visual aids or PowerPoint presentations. At
first, students know the basic steps in making a PowerPoint and the entire Microsoft Office.
But with the help of the subject Empowerment Technology, the students can explore more
in the field of Technologies. And now they are continuing in learning because the
technology is also continuing in developing.

VII. Values
The value of Empowerment Technology makes our individual lives easier in
different aspects such as for school matters, office or work matters and our matters.
Before, blackboards and whiteboards are one of the tools used in teaching students. Now,
there are already have a flat-screen TV that is being used by many institutions or schools
nowadays. With the help of Empowerment Technology, in the past teachers are
computing grades of the students manually. But they are now encoding it in Microsoft
Excel to compute it automatically. In short, the values of Empowerment technology is
making our life easier and less effort, they also help to the modernization of once country
to be strong and globally competitive.
