Hands across the Sea

Materials: NW rug and 10 students, blank paper and pencils, Zero NW Table sheet.

Directions: Teacher stands on Zero and invites others to stand on numbers.


T says "4 and 5 connect" and kids on 4 and 5 touch fingers, point, or hold hands. Any other students
write down the number pairs. One student writes all numbers down on the board.
T says "Tap next numbers" 4 and 5, tap 3 and 6 and they say their numbers. Hold hands or point at
each other.
T says "Connect and tap", they tap 2 and 7 and they say their numbers. Hold hands or point.
T says "Connect and tap", they tap 1 and 8 and they say their numbers. Hold hands or point.
T says "Connect and tap", they tap 0 and 9 and they say their numbers. Hold hands
T says "0 and 9 add up to 9, right?"
T says "All these pairs add up to 9, Say your number and your partner number = 9, start with 1" All
other students write down the pairs of numbers = 9.
Circle goes around. At 9, teacher encourages student to say TEN plus NINE = Ten Nine or Nineteen.
Students go to their Zero NW table sheet and fill in the Make Nines table, starting by writing 0-1-2-3-4
in the top row OR have a table with these numbers in place. See where they are done that the
numbers go around in a circle.

Teacher again stands on Zero and invites others to stand on numbers.


T says "4 and 6 connect" and kids on 4 and 6 hold hands. Any other students write down the number

T says "Connect and tap", they both tap 0 and T says "I am both 0 and 10 and add up to ten, right?"
T says "All these pairs add up to 10, Say your number and your partner number = 10, start with 1" All
other students write down the pairs of numbers = 10. We get to FIVE and five is all alone, across from
0. T says, "Five is all alone, fold your hands like this and say Five and five are ten. Continue around.
Circle goes around.
Students go to their Zero NW table sheet and fill in the Make Tens table. Start by writing
-0=1=2=3=4=5 in the top row

STEP, STRIDE, HOP, SKIP, JUMP away from each other.
