When storing the tong, an effort should be made to locate the unit in a clean, dry, ventilated area. B, The tong, while in storage, should be well lubricated. (See lubrication section of manual). C. Spare moving parts (gears, shafts, etc.), if required to remain in storage for a long period of time, should be coated with a good corrosion inhibitor, and should be stored in a clean, dry environment. D. All O'rings, seals, packings, gaskets, etc., should be stored in a good moisture proof, air-tight container. E. All bearings (cam followers, roller bearings, etc.) should be well lubricated and stored in a dust free box or container, protected from moisture. When the tong is stored outside on drill site in extreme dusty conditions, it is advisable if no storage crates are available to: 1. Apply ample grease to all fittings so that excess grease pumped through bearing acts as a seal against dust. 2. Cover or wrap tong with tarp or plastic to prevent wind blown dust from getting into gears. If tong has been exposed to extreme dust conditions, the following procedures are recommended before use: 1. Suspend tong by body lug, remove clutch inspection plate and wash interior with solvent, diesel fuel or equivalent. 2. When all sand is removed from interior, hook up hydraulic hose and rotate rotary gear, washing teeth of rotary and idler gears as they become exposed. Wash all sand and grit from cam follower grooves in rotary and cage plates. 4. Wash and oil exposed end of shifting shaft. 5. Wash and lightly grease cam surfaces of rotary gear. 6. Grease teeth of rotary gear. 7. Finally, give every grease nipple a few shots of grease to displace any grit or sand which may have remained in bearings 03/94 WL 5500
