MAINTENANCE It is suggested that a regular maintenance program be established, to assure dependable operation of the FARR Hydraulic Tong. The following recommendations concerning cleaning, lubrication, and adjustments will enhance the life expectancy of the tong and assure safety to operating personnel. A. CLEANING The tong should be thoroughly cleaned with a good petroleum base cleaning agent, after each job, prior to storage. It is recommended that periodically the motor and valve assembly be removed, along with the top tong plate, so that guides, rollers and gears can be properly cleaned. B. LUBRICATION A good grade of multipurpose bearing lubricant which is compatible with expected ambient temperatures is recommended along with the following lubrication procedures, at the completion of each job prior to storage. 1. CAGE PLATE CAM FOLLOWERS/POLY RINGS Grease should be applied to these bearings through the grease fittings in the ends of the cam follower shafts, located at the top and bottom face of the tong. If your tong has polyurethane xings instead of cam followers, coat the rings with grease. 2. ROTARY ROLLER BEARINGS Grease should be supplied to these bearings through the grease fittings in the ends of the rotary roller shafts, located at the top and bottom face of the tong. 3. ROTARY IDLER BEARINGS Grease should be applied to these bearings through the grease fittings in the ends of the rotary idler shafts, located at the top face of the tong. 4. PINION IDLER BEARINGS Grease should be applied to these bearings through the grease fittings in the ends of the idler half shafts, located at the top or bottom face of the tong. . PINION BEARINGS Grease should be applied to these bearings through the grease fittings in the pinion bearing caps which are located at the top and bottom face of the tong. 03/94 4.1 5500 10. 03/94 CLUTCH SHAFT BEARINGS Grease should be applied to these bearings through the grease fittings in the clutch bearing cap which is located at the bottom face of the tong. MOTOR MOUNT HOUSING Grease should be applied to the gears in this housing through the grease fitting on top of the motor mount. SHIFTING SHAFT Grease should be applied to the shifting shaft and shifting shaft bushings. DOOR LATCH CAM Grease should be applied to this cam shaft through the grease fitting at the top of the cam. DOOR STOP ASSEMBLY At assembly the spring and cylinder should be coated with a general purpose lubricating oil. Recommended lubrication at the completion of each job should be as follows: Cage Plate Cam Follower Bearings (Upper and lower) 1 shot grease Rotary Roller Bearings (Upper and lower) 3 shots grease Rotary Idler Bearings 4 shots grease Pinion Idler Bearings 4 shots grease Pinion Bearings (Upper and lower) 2 shots grease Clutch shaft Bearings 1 shot grease Motor Mount Housing 10 shots grease Shifting Shaft as required Door Latch cam 2 shots grease 10. Door stop Spring and Cylinder as required It is also recommended that prior to jaw installation a liberal coating of grease should be applied to the cam surface of the rotary drive gear. Also periodically the clutch inspection plate should be removed and a liberal coating of grease applied to the clutch, drive gears and shifting shaft. 4.2 5500 ce ce co. Coe eee a C. ADJUSTMENTS rs 03/94 DOOR LATCH ADJUSTMENT During normal operation of the tong, the door latch may experience wear which will cause the door to develop a loose fit at the latch. When this occurs, an adjustment can easily be made to ensure a secure door fit. This is accomplished as follows (see illustration below): eh em pat Located at the top face of the door is a latch cam plate which has eight positioning holes located on a 360 degree bolt circle. The latch cam shaft extends down through the door and is secured at the top by a 3/8" hex head bolt. To make any adjustment in door alignment, the 3/8" bolt at the top should be removed. Wrench flats are provided on the top cam plate which enable the cam to be turned for alignment. When desired alignment is achieved, the 3/8" hex head bolt should be replaced. NOTE: IT IS IMPORTANT TO KEEP A SECURE FIT AT THE DOOR AS. THIS HELPS MAINTAIN PROPER GEAR ALIGNMENT, REDUCES POSSIBILITY OF IMPACT TORSIONAL STRESSES OCCURRING IN THE GEAR CASE AND ASSURES SAFETY TO OPERATING PERSONNEL. 4.3 5500 2. BRAKE BAND ADJUSTMENT (See illustration below): Ce co cl kl lk broke band sejeiment bot As the tong is used, it becomes necessary at times to adjust the brake bands to provide a smoother and more efficient jaw cam action, If the cage plate turns with the rotary gear, the jaws will not cam Properly and, therefore, will not bite on the tubing or casing. By tightening the brake band against the cage plates, enough frictional resistance occurs to allow jaws to cam properly and grip the casing. To adjust the brake band, simply turn the adjustment bolt clockwise to tighten and counterclockwise to loosen. Do not over tighten, as this causes excessive wear to the brake bands. Door stop spring fatigue will result in a sluggish atch operation. When this occurs, the latch spring inside the cylinder should be replaced. BACKING PIN It is recommended that after each job the backing pin be visibly inspected for wear. If stress cracks or excessive wear exists, the pin should be replaced. 3. SHIFTING SHAFT he shifting yoke is secured to the shifting shaft by one hex jam nut and one lock nut on the bottom of the yoke. | Thess nex should be checked after each job. This can be accomplished by removing the clutch inspection plate and ensuring a snug fit, prior to lubrication. .. TORQUE GAUGE ASSEMBLY Periodic calibration of the torque gauge is recommended to assure accurate torque readings. When having the torque gauge serviced and calibrated, it is important to note the arm length of the tong, as indicated on page 2.1. 03/94 4.5 5500 E. OVERHAUL PROCEDURES Should the need arise to overhaul any portion of the tong, certain disassembly procedures must be followed. Access to the gear train is possible by removal of the top plate of the tong. NOTE: ALL MAINTENANCE AND OVERHAUL SHOULD BE ACCOMPLISHED FROM THE TOP. THEREFORE, THE BOTTOM PLATE OF THE TONG SHOULD NEVER BE REMOVED FROM THE GEAR CASE HOUSING. : 1, The first step in disassembly of the top plate for overhaul is to remove the motor and throttle valve assembly. This is accomplished as follows: a. Remove the four 1/2" bolts which secure the motor to the motor mount. b. Remove the two i/2" bolts which secure the throttle valve assembly in place. c. The motor and throttle valve assembly may then be lifted off. With the motor and valve assembly removed, the motor gear, located at the bottom of the motor shaft, should be inspected for gear clashing or tooth damage. Also, ensure that the motor gear is securely attached to the motor shaft. 2. The next step is to disconnect the linkage between the shifting handle and the shifting shaft. This can be accomplished simply be removing the cotter pin from the shifting shaft link and removing the clevis pin. At this point, the shifting adjustment bolt should be backed off about 1/2". This relieves compression on the spring and allows the ball to disengage from the slot in the shifting Shaft. Remove the adjustment bolt and, using a pencil magnet, extract the ball and spring before the shifting shaft is removed, to prevent loss of the ball inside the tong. 4. Next, the motor mount may be removed. This is accomplished by simply removing the four 1/2" socket head cap screws. The motor mount can then be lifted out of place. 5. With the motor mount removed, the next step should be to remove the snap ring which allows the disassembly of the top clutch gear. 03/94 4.6 5500 ci ce co Cc eet eee a ot C7 At this point, the door should be removed by the following procedure: so phon i a. Remove the door stop assembly by removing the two 3/8" bolts holding the piston and cylinder to the top plate of the tong. b. Remove the top lock nuts from the door roller shaft. c. Remove the grease fitting from the top of the door roller shafts and drive the shaft out. The shafts should be very carefully driven out with a soft alloy material (e.g. brass rod, etc.) to eliminate the possibility of damage to the shafts or doors. This then allows the doors to be removed. NOTE: WHEN REMOVING THE DOOR, MAKE CAREFUL NOTE OF THE BEARING SHIMS WHICH ALIGN THE DOOR. AT REASSEMBLY OF THE DOOR AFTER OVERHAUL, IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO REASSEMBLE DOOR BEARING SHIMS IN THE SAME SEQUENCE TO ENSURE DESIRED DOOR ALIGNMENT. The next step is to loosen the top brake band. (See illustration below): ge This is accomplished by backing off the brake band adjustment bolts until the nut is flush with the end of the bolt. 03/94 4.7 5500 10. ll 12. 13. 14. 15. 03/94 With the brake bands loosened, the next step is to remove the top and bottom cage plates. ‘This is accomplished by removing the three cage plate support bolts. With these three bolts removed, the top cage plate can be lifted off. NOTE: CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN IN REMOVING THE CAGE PLATE BOLTS AS THEY ARE THE ONLY MEANS OF SUPPORT FOR THE BOTTOM CAGE PLATE. TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE BOTTOM CAGE PLATE OR PERSONAL INJURY TO THE MECHANIC, THE BOTTOM CAGE PLATE SHOULD BE SUPPORTED FROM BELOW TO PREVENT IT FROM FALLING DOWN UPON REMOVAL OF THE THREE CAGE PLATE BOLTS. The next step is to pull the top bearing cap and spacer for the pinion drive gear. To accomplish this, remove the four 1/2" bolts which secure the bearing cap. Take two of the bolts and thread them into the two extra holes on top of the bearing cap, and using these as lifting lugs, lift the bearing cap out of place. NOTE: IF THE BEARING REMAINS ATTACHED TO THE GEAR SHAFT AFTER THE BEARING CAP IS PULLED, IT IS RECOMMENDED TO LEAVE IT THERE UNTIL THE TOP TONG PLATE IS REMOVED. Remove the top clutch bearing retainer which is secured by two or three countersunk socket head screws. Remove the nuts and pads for the rotary and pinion idler gears. Remove the top roller shaft nuts. Remove the 3/8" hex head bolts around the perimeter of the tong which secure the top plate to the gear case housing. Remove the 3/8" countersunk socket head screws around the perimeter of the tong. With all the above steps taken, the top tong plate can be lifted off providing access to the inside of the gear case. 4.8 5500 Cc Co co Cl co.) Uc OU CO OO a SC ee
