Methicillin-Resistant

Staphylococcus Aureus
Riley Klinger
DEFINITION
Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) is a
type of bacteria that is resistant to several antibiotics
related to penicillin, methicillin, and oxacillin.

2
Who gets MRSA?
And where?

● Older adults and people with weakened immune

systems
● People who have been in hospitals or other health
care facilities (nursing homes, dialysis centers)

About 2% of the U.S. population carries MRSA in their

bodies and yet the bacteria doesn’t always cause
illness or infection.

3
4
How is
MRSA spread?

MRSA can enter the body when there is a cut

or break in the skin; this creates an infection.

MRSA is spread by skin-to-skin contact.

Like any
common cold
It is also spread by contact with items that
have been touched by infected people.
5
90,000 U.S. people get MRSA each year

About 20,000 U.S. people die of MRSA

each year (mostly children)
6
What are
the symptoms?

Skin Infection Severe Infections

● Pimples ● High fever
● Rashes ● Swelling
● Pus-filled boils ● Heat and pain
● Painful around a wound
● Red ● Headache
● Swollen ● Fatigue

7
What does
MRSA look like?

8
How is
MRSA diagnosed?

MRSA cannot be diagnosed without special lab tests. It is

usually diagnosed wrongly by doctors, and they prescribe
the wrong antibiotics that don’t kill MRSA.

Due to this longing of diagnosis, the MRSA infections can

result in prolonged illness and rare-life threatening illnesses
in the blood, heart, and bones.

MRSA may also produce substances that can cause more

severe infections.
9
How is
MRSA treated?

● Wash your hands

● Keep wounds covered
● Keep personal items to yourself
● Shower after athletic games and practices
● Sanitize linens
● Don’t inject illicit drugs
● See a doctor if you have any questions or an
infection that does not improve
