How effective will the wet sand fencing will be at managing the erosion and deposition affecting

Inverloch?

The wet sand fencing at Inverloch will likely have some effect at slowing the erosion of the sand
dunes at the surf beach in the short term. Previous trials at Phillip Island have seen successful
results, and with ongoing maintenance, combined with beach nourishment, it is likely that the surf
beach will see a significant restoration to its previous size, and vital assets like the lifesaving club and
the Cape Patterson-Inverloch road will be preserved. However, a number of areas of the beach will
be closed off, or hazardous to beach users, with large fence posts sticking out of the sand for years
to come. Also, considering the long term projections of sea level rise, a management plan such as
this may only be a viable option for the next few decades. Therefore, a more serious contingency
plan should be considered by both local, state and federal governments. As Inverloch is not the only
coastal community that will be impacted in this way by climate change.
