Combination of two optical

devices: microscopic glasses

and hand magnifiers

Karin van Dijk

Situations to use combination
 When one optical device is not enough

 When magnification needed is more than +20D

 Different power needed for different task

Advantages
 More power than 1 device

 Better distance

 Useful for different tasks eg. Reading small

print combination. And writing larger only
with magnifying glasses
Case studies: system of
magnification needed
 0.18/ 1.5M 12D
typoscope and +8 D optical

 0.1/ 2M 20D
+16D glasses + table lamp

 0.05/ 2.5M 50D what to do?

Practical ways to use: Exercise
 Hand magnifiers against the lens of magn.glasses

 Hand magnifiers at half or near the focal distance

of the lens of the glasses

 Further away than focal distance of the lens of the

glasses

 Hold hand magnifiers from text at appropriate

distance
Feed back
 Situation 1: Best magnification: but lens can
scratch/ stable system, distance gets more close

 Situation 2: also good, less magnification, hands

get tired, but better distance than one devices

 Situation 3: less magnification than glasses alone,

blurred picture

 Hold magnifier just inside focal distance from text
