Relatedness:

Food spoilage is one known enemy of facilities that requires storing food or
products. Light is one factor in how food spoil and how it reduces its freshness.

According to the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Clemson

University, photodegradation can be caused through sunlight and also flourescent
light, although for most solid products, the outer layer will be mostly penetrated
and can cause discoloration on its surface, on the other hand, liquid products can
be affected by light due to mixing and agitation.

The light sensitivity of foods depends on factors such as(Howard, 2013):

1. light source strength and type of light that it emits.

2. distance of the light source from the food
3. length of exposure
4. optical properties of the packaging materials
5.Whether the food is solid or liquid.

Paper-Case-The-Effects-of-Lighting-on-Product-Integrity-2015.pdf

According to a paper from the Learning Center of Hillphoenix, lighting

affects the integrity on most products, it discussed the different types of
lighting but most of it have the same effect generally, but light's affects product
on how it was used.

The paper discussed the two general approach to reduce the harmful effect of
light on products, they are:

Packaging, this approach can be done by most suppliers, in how will they
package and market their products, photodegration on products accelerates when
oxygen penetrates it, using solid light blocking can prevent this effects.

Lighting, the overall solution of this approach is using dim lights on the
general lighting for the facility and having dedicated lights for the products but
the intensity is reduced to the right amount depending on the product.
