3. Classification of wood with respect to the nature of surface when sawed. (3 pts.)

Test III. Problem Solving (5 points each)

Solve the following problems and show your COMPLETE AND LOGICAL solutions legibly. Correct
answers with unreadable or incorrect solutions will be considered as INCORRECT. Unable to show
the correct solution would also mean INCORRECT answer.

1. Maynard and Grace agreed to purchase lumber of sizes 2” x 2”, 2” x 4” and 4”x4” to complete
the frame for their future rest house. Unfortunately, the saw mill wasn’t able to give their
desired sizes due to the high demand of lumber that day. To ensure that they will still get
the lumber, they opt to bought two lumbers of sizes 8” x 8” x 12’ and asked the saw mill in-
charge to reduce them on their desired sizes. If cutting those lumbers would cost them
Php15.00 per board foot, how much do they need to pay in all?

2. Esthern Dyan bought a lumber of size 8” x 6” x 14’. If she wants to cut the whole piece into
smaller sizes having dimensions 2” x 3” x 168”, how many pieces of smaller lumber will she
get? Assume that there are no losses upon cutting.

3. To prove his extraordinary strength, Gelwen cut a mahogany tree using his chainsaw in less
than 5 minutes. He was then able to measure the log’s dimension and obtain the following:

Cross-sectional diameter of one end: 14 inches

Cross-sectional diameter of the other end: 18 inches
Length of the log: 32 ft.
How many board feet of lumber could be derived from that log?
