1. An Integrated silicon chip and 8mm thick aluminum substrate are separated by a 0.02mm
thick epoxy joint. The chip and substrate are each 10mm on a side, and their exposed
surfaces are cooled by air, which is at a temperature of 25°C and provides a convection
coefficient of 100 W/m2K. If the chip dissipates 104 W/m2 under normal conditions, will it
operate below maximum allowable temperature of 85°C?

(Ans : Tc=75.3°C)
2. The walls of a refrigerator are typically constructed by sandwiching a layer of insulation
between sheet metal panels. Consider a wall made from fiberglass insulation of thermal
conductivity ki=0.046 W/mK and thickness Li =50 mm and steel panels, each of thermal
conductivity kp=60 W/m K and thickness Lp=3 mm. If the wall separates refrigerated air
at Ti=4°C from ambient air at To= 25°C, what is the heat gain per unit surface area?
Coefficients associated with natural convection at the inner and outer surfaces may be
approximated as hi=ho =5 W/m2 K.

(Ans : q”=14.1 W/mK)
3. “Two-by-four” wood studs have actual dimensions of 4.13 × 9.21 cm and a thermal
conductivity of 0.1 W/mK A typical wall for a house is constructed as shown Figure.
Calculate the overall heat-transfer coefficient and R value of the wall.

4. A wall is constructed of a section of stainless steel [k = 16 W/mK] 4.0 mm thick with
identical layers of plastic on both sides of the steel. The overall heat-transfer coefficient,
considering convection on both sides of the plastic, is 120 W/m2 · ◦C. If the overall
temperature difference across the arrangement is 60◦C, calculate the temperature difference
across the stainless steel.
