Apart from the TDC mark for the piston's top dead centre in cylinder 1, there are 12 other marks on the camshaft (2 for
each cylinder).

Each mark consists of one digit (1-6) and a line.

The letter V is stamped in front of six of the digit markings.

Digits on their own indicate that the rocker arms for the inlet valves and the unit injector, on the applicable cylinder, are
in the correct position for adjustment. This is on condition that the line marked on the camshaft lies between the marks
on the bearing cap.

V together with digits, indicates, in the same way, that the exhaust valve rocker arm is in the correct position for
adjustment.

The camshaft bearing caps bear two markings, about 5 mm apart.

The line marked on the camshaft shall lie between the marks on the bearing cap when adjusting.

Adjustment, general
2
The instructions below show the order in which the valves and unit injectors should be adjusted:

Exhaust valves VEB, adjustment

Inlet valves, adjustment
Unit injector, preload adjustment

Note that valves and unit injectors should be adjusted in the order indicated by the camshaft marks when the engine is
rotated in the normal direction.

By adjusting in this order, the camshaft only needs to revolve twice to adjust all the valves and unit injectors.

It can be a good idea to mark the rocker arms that have been checked/adjusted with a marking pen.

Note: If the adjustment is done in a vehicle, ensure that the gearbox is in neutral, that the parking brake is on and that
the start key is in the 0 position.

Turn the flywheel using tool 88800014 until the nearest line marked on the camshaft for exhaust valves lies between
the marks on the bearing cap.

Check the camshaft digit markings to see which cylinders can be adjusted.

Special tools: 88800014

6
Check that the camshaft mark that is lying between the bearing cap marks is for the adjustment of exhaust valves. For
example, V5.

Push the rocker arm down as shown in the illustration. If the rocker arm springs, the rocker arm piston spring must be
pulled outwards at the same time as the rocker arm is pressed down to contact the valve stems.

The oil film which may be left inside the piston is punctured when the piston loosens from the seat, and the setting
becomes more exact.

Use a strong wire or a bent screwdriver to pull out the spring.

Note: Make sure that the wire or the screwdriver has been thoroughly cleaned before use.
The presence of contaminants between the rocker arm piston and the rocker arm can lead to the piston seizing and the
brake function on the cylinder failing to work.
Ensure that the piston’s sliding surface in the rocker arm is not damaged.

8
Check condition for the current vehicle:

Rocker arms with shim, proceed with steps 9, 10 ,11, and 13

Rocker arms shimless, proceed with steps 9, 12.

Measure the valve play using a feeler gauge, note the value and compare it with that given in the Specifications.

Note: Turn the rocker arm thrust sleeve to ensure that it does not tilt when the measurement is taken.

Note: If the rocker arms are shimless, do not proceed with next step, go to 12.

10

If the valve clearance needs adjustment, remove the locking screw and shim(s).

Calculate, on the basis of the measured value, the required thickness of the new shim(s).

A maximum of two shims may be used.

(Select shims so that both have more or less the same thickness if two shims are to be used.)

Note: The thickness of the shims increases in steps of 0.05 mm, and the thickness is stamped on each shim.

IMPACT 4.00.51.00-SNAPSHOT 14/09/16

Make sure that the shims and the valve calliper have been well cleaned. Fit the shims and tighten the locking screws to
the correct torque.

Note: If rocker arm is adjusted with shim, do not proceed wit next step, go to 13.

12
If the clearance needs adjustment, adjust it between the exhaust rocker arm ball socket and the valve caliper according
to Specification using the adjusting screw on the top of the rocker arm and a feeler gauge.
Torque tighten the nut.

13

Check the valve clearance.

14
Adjust the other VEB exhaust valves in the same way.

Adjust for the correct valve clearances in accordance with the Specifications, refer to Group 20. Tighten the lock nuts.

Check the valve clearance.

Unit injector, preload adjustment

17
Check that the markings on the camshaft for adjustment of the inlet valves and unit injectors are centred between the
markings on the bearing cap.

Check the camshaft digit markings to see on which cylinders the unit injector preload can be adjusted.

Note: If tool 88800014 is used to turn the flywheel, ensure that it is removed if the starter motor is to be used instead.

18
Loosen the adjustment screw and adjust the unit injector rocker arm so that there is no clearance between it and the
camshaft.

19

Preload the unit injector by screwing down the adjustment screw 3-4 flats (180°-240°). Tighten the locknut.

20
Adjust the other unit injectors in the same way.

Function check
21
Carry out a function check by starting the engine.
