SGW: Mini OP (6 minutes)

An Oral/Multimodal Analysis of how a particular text tries to persuade its

readers through the use of argumentative claims and evidence

1. Read closely the text. Discuss with your group mates the following:

a. What is the thesis statement – in other words, what is the main point /
claim of the writer? Get it from the text if it is explicitly stated; otherwise
say it in your own words.
b. What are the supporting evidence? Identify them.
c. What writing techniques did the writer use to convince the readers of
his/her main point?
2. Using a video clip or movie (made up of pictures or moving images),
present in a 60-120 second what the reading text is all about (if you agree
to it) or a content (also made up of pictures or moving images) that
disagrees with it. This is to present in images what the text is all about or
what you want the text to talk about instead. Integrate appropriate
background music and narratives.
3. Transition to a TED-like presentation (about 3-4 minutes) explaining how
the author explains this in the text – pointing out the author’s claim,
supporting evidence, and rhetorical techniques.
4. Each member should have a part to do.
5. All presentations are to be played on Monday. Be ready with your own
gadgets and speakers.
