Chapter 1:
1. Explain hunt
A pack of hunting dogs chased a hare, which was followed by men on horseback.
Horses were trying to jump a brook to get the hare. One of the fallen horses broke
his leg and it was shot down ,and its rider also died.
Darkie was broken in by learning to respond to rider's command , to bear a rider and to wear
a saddle and a bridle
Chapter 2
The name of the coachman was John Manly; he used to make black beauty 's tail
almost as smooth as a lady's hair, and he would talk to black beauty a lot. He was so
gentle and kind; he seemed to know just how a horse feels. He used to clean black
beauty and brushed black beauty's hair carefully if they were his own.
James Howard was the stable boy. He was gentle and pleasant in his way, There was
another man who helped in the yard , but he didn’t do much for black beauty.
Black beauty hated as he missed his liberty and he had to stand night and day
,steady and quiet as an old horse.

Black beauty. John told that the name was good.
5. Describe Samson
Samson, wasn't gentle , he wanted to just make her into a quiet, humble, obedient
horse . One day after he'd been drinking, Samson carelessly hit her hard with a rein
while riding, . He hit her for doing it, and she began to buck until she threw him. She
was cut and injured by his beating, but no one came to help her.
Chapter 4:
Merrylegs threw the boys because she rode the boys for one hour and hinted them that she
was tired, but they wanted to ride more and beated her with sticks.
3) Why was oliver tail short? What difficult he faced because of that?
When oliver was young,he was tied up and his tail was cut off right through bone and flesh
for fashion. He couldn’t brush flies off his sides and hind legs without his tail.
Skeys pups tails and ears were cut off for fashion.
Horses thought wearing blinkers was not at all useful and many accidents could have been
avoided without blinkers as blinkers would not allow horses to use full eye sight.
Chapter 5:
Sawyer said that the pony was strong willed and disobedient, so he whipped to teach pony a
lesson.
Pony went towards the park gate as he remembered that he was often driven to that place
and thought that he had to go there.
3) Why did captain Langley use bearing reins for his horse?
Captain Langley used bearing reins for his horses because he wanted to hold his horse's
head up.
4) How did black beauty rescue squire Gordon and john from getting drowned in the river?
Black beauty knew that bridge was not safe to ride and refused to move forward , and thus
rescued squire Gordon and john from getting drowned in the river.
John reported to farmer bushby about the cruelty of his son towards the pony to rescue
farmer bushby's pony.
6) Mention some of the instances in which squire gardon tried to stop cruelty to animals.
Squire Gordon advices sawyer not to whip the pony. He advised captain Langley to stop
using bearing reins for his horses. When he was at school , he beated a boy who was
catching flies and pulling their wings.
Chapter 6.
John opined that James was an honest ,smart , pleasant and cheerful lad. He said that James
was very gentle and clever with the horses.
He said black beauty was well mannered ,well cared , well groomed and responded properly
Dick Towler smoke with pipe inside the stable and then the stable caught fire.
James came inside, he patted and coaxed black beauty , then he tied his scarf lightly over
black beauty’s eyes and led him off.
5) Why was John willing to try Joe though he was a young boy?
John knew that his master wanted to give a chance to Joe and remembered the generosity
of his master and mistress when John was helpless, so he wanted to help Joe.
6) Describe briefly how a fire broke in stable and how black beauty and ginger were rescued.
Dick Towler smoked inside the stable and as a result stable caught fire. A hostler rushed in
and untied the horses. He tried to led them out, but horses refused to move. Then James
came inside, patted and coaxed black beauty, he asked black beauty to come out , he tied
his scarf gently over black beauty eyes and led him out. Black beauty neighed from outside.
On hearing that Ginger got courage and came out.
Chapter 7:
John rode black beauty to the doctor’s house. Mrs. Gordon was very ill and master wanted
to hand over a note to doctor for visiting her.
Black beauty felt so exhausted because he rode for a long distance without taking much rest.
John got angry with Joe, because Joe didn’t cover black beauty with warm clothes.
Black beauty galloped fastly to reach doctor’s place and brought him on time without taking
much rest.
Chapter 8:
1) Why did the carter flog the horses? Were the horses at fault?
The wheels of carter's cart stuck in the mud. Carter flogged the horses to pull the wheels out
of the mud. No the horses were not at fault as the load of cart was heavy, horses could not
pull the wheels out of the mud.
Joe reported about carter to brickmaker Mr.Clay and later on gave evidence to send carter
to prison for two months.
3) Write an account when you saw an animal being treated cruelly? Did you do anything?
I saw one day one of my friend was teasing a dog. I adviced my friend not to disturb it.
Chapter 9:
Master and mistress left Birtwick park since doctor advised mistress to go to a warm country
at least for three years.
Merrylegs was given to Vicar on condition that he should not be sold. Master and mistress
were fond of Merrylegs, so they gave Merrylegs to Vicar.
John wants for a good position with horse trainer because he loved horses and wanted to
give good start in life to many horses.
4) What arrangements were made by the master for all the members of the household?
Merrylegs was given to vicar on a condition that he should not be sold. Joe also went with
Merrylegs. Black beauty and Ginger were sold to Earl ,an old friend of master. Master said
that he would speak to his agent to find suitable place for John as John was looking for a
good position with some good horse trainer.
Chapter 10:
John told York that Black beauty had even temper and would obey the coach man, and as
Ginger was having bad start , she was snappish and suspicious but for the past three years
didn't show signs of temper, John informed that if one treats Ginger well she would be a
better horse.
2) What was the new mistress at Earlshall like? what did she like the most?
The new mistress at Earlshall was a tall and proud lady who seemed to be displeased at
something. She liked the horses head to be held up using bearing rein.

Ginger was restless and didnt like the bearing rein, one day she hit York on his nose and
kicked him with all his strength.

New home of the horses at Ealrshall was big with number of stables. Their new mistress was
a tall and proud lady who seemed to be displeased at something. She liked the horses head
to be held up using bearing rein.
