We should maintain high hygienic standards on board due to Limited space & No doctors
available on board.
As the officers & crew spend many months on ship, they can spread simple infections more
easily
Lastly, ship visits different countries and people from different environment come in contact
with the crew on board causing infection.
Q.What are the consequences of Port Health Inspectors making an adverse remark about hygienic
conditions onboard?
If the Port Health Inspectors find the ship unhygienic then they may lay a fine or decide on detention
of the vessel (means imprisonment)

Distance vision should be unaided
The physical fitness certificate obtained from Seaman Employment Office prior to
registration, proves that the seafarer is free from all contagious diseases and renders him fit
for sea service .
This fitness certificate is given as per the guidelines of the latest Merchant Shipping
Regulations to show concern on the health & safety of other passengers in the ship . This
fitness certificate has to be carried by the seafarer without fail ,while joining the ship.
