Pottery!! No, it did not come from poetry.

Rather you can say that some poetry was created from
Pottery. An English man Matthew wrote a poetry called ”The soul” –

A vessel for water

hardened soil
ceramic broken
forever spoiled.

But gather with care

these grounded bits,
and paint upon them
as a soul canvas

So, what is pottery?? Well, it`s an art which is made up of only clay. Pottery is also a form of
ceramics but it is not ceramic. However, there is a difference between pottery and ceramics.

It`s being said that the origin of Pottery of Bangladesh has been discovered
in Mahejodaro and Harappa civilization and after the excavation of Mohasthangar (around 1500
BC). Potters were essentially popular during the zamindars as they used to make stunning sculpture
and showpieces. After the end of Zamindars, potters started making day to day household items
for sale in the local market. Interestingly the potters are predominantly Hindu although Bangladesh
is predominantly a Muslim country. Potters are commonly known as Paul in the locality. They are
doing pottery business generation after generation.
A few questions may come to your mind regarding pottery like what actually can be made from
clay? Is it durable? Is it beautiful? and much more like this. You would be surprised to know that
from a simple toy to beautiful home décor can be made from clay. Skilled potters are able to give
different shape and to create attractive products to all of us. Now-a-days, in different markets we
can notice a very demand of pottery. From a village fair to a trade fair in Dhaka city, we can easily
get this thing. To décor the house, restaurant or any community center, pottery is everywhere. Most
people choose pottery because of its great availability and for its reasonable price. According to
the market survey, it is generally noticed that the prices of the products are not so high. A good
looking flower vases are sold at a price range of 100 taka to 600 taka depending on the size.
Moreover, designed flower vases are sold at the price range of 300 taka to 1200 depending on the
size. showpiece at Tk. 15 to Tk. 120, flower set at Tk. 120, wall tub at Tk. 50, household cooking

Pottery is now a commercial product. In Dhaka, there are several places where we can find this
products like Dhaka university campus, Mirpur Road, Dhaka railway station and other places.
Moreover, an organization that works with the potters is Aarong. The price-range is a bit high over
here, but the clients are fulfilled with the varieties and prices. Vessels are sold here at Tk. 50-150
each, cooker set at Tk. 80-Tk. 300, etc. Rakhi, a salesgirl at Aarong, says that the number of
sophisticated clients are increasing year after year. ‘The demand for earthen products is quite high,’
she said. However, Ratan Pal, a pottery trader from Kolabagan, complained that products which
traders like him sell at Tk. 100 outside the super shops are sold at Tk. 200 at Aarong. As a result,
potter like Ratan gets demotivated as they don`t get the equal price and loose interest.
