The Morning Assembly

Every one of us must have a fresh start every day

at school.
That is one of the reasons why we have morning
assemblies at HLC.
You’ll definitely love our assembly after reading
this!
Here’s how it goes…
Instead of a bell to call the students for the
assembly, we have a song played. Once everyone has
settled down in the assembly area, the students close
their eyes and are silent for a few minutes, so that
you can be aware of what is happening around you.
You can hear birds chirping, the rustling leaves, the
sound of nature…
A few minutes later, we chant a prayer which
is meaningful and motivational. Here are a few
lines…
Alasasya kuto vidya,
Avidyasya kuto dhanam
Adhanasya kuto mitram,
Amritrasya kuta sukham

Meaning: No effort, no knowledge;

No knowledge, no wealth;
No wealth, no friends;
No friends, no happiness!
Then comes the best part! Every month, there is a
topic given by the students . Each week, one grade
is responsible for performing something related to
the topic of the month - singing a song, enacting a
play, or sharing facts on the topic. Then we
disperse.
We, the students of HLC, love our morning
assembly.
It helps us to have a calm and happy day.

The Concert
There was an announcement earlier in the morning
th th
about a workshop that was going to happen for 4 to 6
Grade. We were looking at each other uninterested for
another boring class. In a while we could see a person
walking in the corridor with a box. Our curiosity grew. We
came to know that he was a musician. We were amazed to
know that he could play several instruments . Later in the
evening we found out that it was a musical workshop! We
were looking forward to it. The workshop was interesting
as we could see that uncle who came could play
Several instruments. In the end of the workshop
they decided to play a song called Sunflower.
The concert began at 1:30 and everyone cheered
for the band. The students were ready with their
instruments. There were two violins, two keyboards,
two guitars , a Cajon , a flute and four outstanding
singers . The concert started with the chords of the
keyboards and the guitars. This was followed by the
violinists. The expressions of the violins reminded me of
the up - down movements of waves in the ocean . The
chords provided a strong foundation, like the
sea bed , for the waves to float on . The chorus
of the song vividly reminded me of the melodies
birds chirping over the turquoise sea .
 I, being a part of the audience , am like a
 sailor sailing in the middle of the sea and
experiencing the veritable music of nature. This
whole majestic dream was abruptly interrupted
by the “thump” of one of my friend’s hand on my
shoulder, who was trying to wake me up from my
dream of music during the concert . The music
sounded melodious .However, the electric guitar
drowned the combined efforts of all the other
participants. After this there was an acoustic
guitar solo that discretely harmonized with the
flute. The concert ended with a round of
applause.
 A musical treat indeed!!1

Chennai Water Scarcity
Chennai residents suffered from lack of water, for the last
6 to 7 months. Due to this, several thousand people were
affected and it affected day to day activities, such as
cleaning and cooking etc. Several hotels and restaurants
shut down temporarily. Various industries were also affected
by shortage of water, as they had to provide alternate work
options to employees. Along with this, birds and animals
also suffered during this peak drought.

Main reasons
The experts attribute the unprecedented water scarcity to
four main reasons
 Less rain
 Pollution of water sources
 Major wreck in rain harvesting system
 Cutting down trees

Way forward
The government should bring strict regulations to conserve
water sources and tree. They should impose strict
punishments against who breaks these regulations. It should
be made mandatory to install rainwater harvesting system
across all buildings and apartments. The residents
themselves should become more responsible and waste no
water.

HLC International Science Fair

th
On June 28 at HLC , we all spoke science!!! June
had been a busy month for students - groups
discussing and teachers guiding them to put the best
display on their theme. Yes!! It was all for the science
fair. Soon after the school reopened, the students
brought their back to school enthusiasm directly to the
science expo.

The ambience in the science fair was one of the

profound optimism, marked by a sense of common
purpose. All the kids were excited about
communicating science, just like me. I was a little
excited to see all ambitious projects around me.
Mostly I was awed by the brain power on display ,the
vast range of problems that kids were trying to solve or
at least see a big picture of it. All the elements added
up to an inspiring and a joyous experience.

That was the moment when— It was not just

about science, it was
about a
bigger culture —
one could feel the
excitement when
they were there.
Habitat:
The natural home or environment of an animal, plant
or other organisms.

In other words, a person 's or an animal's usual or

preferred surroundings.

Display on habitats:
This theme took us on a tour of information posters
and 3D models about an animal living in a particular
habitat and a model on marine habitat.

It was a very informative and an interactive session

with students on :

where would you usually find an animal-description of

the habitat

what other animals live in the same habitat- how the

animals obtain food etc...

It also had a game challenge on where in the world is

your habitat located and unique features etc...
Astrology:
Astrology is the study of how the
positions of the stars and movements of the
planets have a supposed influence on events
and on the lives and behaviour of people.
The session clearly distinguished science
from non-science, and how modern astrologers
see astrology as a symbolic language and how
it is being seen as an art, or a kind of divination.

Zodiac signs :

Zodiac signs have impacts too. There are

twelve zodiac signs.
Some of the zodiac signs are :
Virgo, Leo, Gemini, Capricorn and Cancer.

KG Adds Weight to the Institution

-Manudhay

When many events take place at HLC

International School, our KG friends have been
working on their material display to show what
they have learnt up to date.
Pre-KG had been displaying about their muscle
movement for the future. The movements were
divided into two groups: Fine Motors and Gross
Motors. Fine Motors means movements for small
muscles in our body like writing, drawing and
many more activities. They displayed it by doing
finger activities other than drawing and writing.
Gross Motors means movements for large
muscles like our hamstrings for running, jumping
and lifting.
LKG and UKG also focused on these motors but
more than that, they focused on the materials
too. They exhibited the materials they used to
learn and demonstrated what they learnt. This
helped in creating an awareness among the
parents about what the children had been
taught.
The children displayed sight words. Example: If
they see a toy, they immediately say it is a toy
because by now they are used to seeing it in
their day to day life.
They also did some listening activities.
Example: The teacher says something and asks
them questions to test their listening skills.
This year, KG has mostly focused on the ways
they learn and what they learnt.
“This year, the children have done better than
usual.” said one of the teachers.

Theatre is a new subject for Grades 4 and 5

which has been introduced this year.

It is held in the second and third periods on

Wednesday just before recess. The theatre is
featuring Koothu which is a Tamil folk art. It
consists of songs, dance, dialogue and vibrant
costumes for the actors. A quote from Sahasra of
grade 5, “It was very new and different, I enjoyed
it a lot.”

Most of Grade 5 look forward to Wednesday

because the theatre class is abundantly fun and is
very interesting.
SULAKSHYA
It was on 26th June 2019 when students from Grades 6, 7
and 8 of HLC International School participated in
Sulakshya, an inter school cultural fest which caters to a
wide range of talents displayed by students. It is fun and
sportive, also encourages children to collaborate and
perform enthusiastically. In this year of Sulakshya, 10 – 15
schools across Chennai participated and Girinandhini, a
student from grade 6 exclaimed, ''It was an outstanding
event and I experienced new things while going on the
journey of singing a song with a theme!'' There were 2 days,
one for physical competitions and the other for art form
competitions like dance, mimes and songs. Though HLC did
not win everything, we were proud and happy with what we
st
got. The 1 day HLC scores follow:

Basketball girls and boys = HLC won for both categories :-)

Football boys = Runner ups :-)

Table tennis girls and boys = lost :-(

Table tennis singles = Ashmitha of Grade 8 bagged the 2nd

was a complete success.
It had a diverse range of topics being exhibited. There
were a variety of board games, quizzes and many

Foreign Lands

Up into the cherry tree

Who should climb but me
I held the trunk with both hands
And looked aboard on foreign lands
If I could find a higher tree
Farther and farther I should see
To where the grown-up river slips
Into the sea among ships
To where the roads on other hand
Lead onward a fairy land
Where all the children dine at five
And playthings come alive.

THE EXPERIENCE OF THE
STUDENTS DURING THE SCIENCE
FAIR
We felt nervous for the first five minutes and then we

had a lot of fun talking with the parents.

Our own parents encouraged us to be bold and to

speak well in front of others.

After one hour some children felt tired and some felt

active.

Everyone felt they were doing great.

The games and models which everyone made was

creative and looked real.

Everyone was eager to get a certificate.

The classes were beautiful, filled with models like a

garden filled with flowers.

The students were busy explaining their models to

display their skills and abilities.

There were a lot of games created by the students

which kept the parents busy and amazed.

We were all united and did a collaborative work.

We were all eager for our parents to come and hear

our speech.

The day ended with great happiness and it was

totally an intellectual fair!!

MUN
MUN – Model United Nations is like an United
Nation for children where each person represents
one country and discuss worldwide problems.
There are different committees who handle
different types of issues . For example, the
Brazilians burning down the Amazon Rain forest
comes under environmental issues .
Nitya, a student from Grade 11 of HLC remarked,
'It's fun, but there is lots of room for improvement
though it does help a lot with building different
skills. I recommend others to go only after they
reach Grade 8.' HLC sent twenty one students this
year and though their ideas haven't helped any
country so far, I think it will !

This exciting year, we had an event called “GENRE WEEK” on 19th August
2019. Parents were invited and teachers were encouraging us to do well.
What is genre?
A particular type or style of literature.
Types of genre
Adventure, Mystery, Fantasy, Sci-fiction, Historical-fiction, Realistic-fiction
and Poem
Our class did an adventure genre, a Sci-fiction skit, a poem and a mime.
The adventure genre was about a pirate who saves her friends from the sea
monsters. The Sci-fiction was about two explorers who find two aliens and
introduces them to their captain and commander. The poem was about
Atlantis and the mime was about a king and a queen, commanding
scientists, Cyclops and the army soldiers in Atlantis.
Other classes performed various skits and songs from different genres. The
highlight was the Salt Satyagraha
performed by Grade 4.
Finally, the genre week was concluded
by an interactive question and answer
session and one of my friend ended with
a speech about the performance of the
students.
SPORTS DAY YAY!!
13th and 14th of September.
We are the first when day's begun,
To catch the rays of morning sun;
Joy for being messed up,
Fun to play by being dressed up;
There stands Red house with merry,
Shining like a cherry;
There stands all in row
Like a ripen corn in yellow.
There stands in a bright hue
My dear friends all in blue.
There stand with eyes keen
A faithful team in green.

1...2...3...Run
Stood in shoes, the kids wondered
Which leg goes after which?
In the mind, seeing the pitch
Getting ready, when to run
On the track that stays hard
In the ground like a long yard
Dribble...Dribble...
Up on high
In the sky.
With a Bump and Dump
Oh! What fun.
Watching the hoops
of fire as bright round sun.
In an expert's way
There the ball that lay
Up in air, team was trying
With ball in hand, cleverest as flying.
Out...Jump...
Enough of fun Dodge ball yard.
Round and round
Hey turn around.
Up and down ,Out and in
Out and jump here they spin.
Kick...pass.
Kick and pass
Counting the closing minutes
Though the legs feel weak
Took there turns to pass and seek
Clothes and arms ,Face and Hair
Wet all over everywhere

Relay in its own way....

“Will you run a little faster?”
Said a teammate thanking with the baton
that lay;
Running just in her own way,
Too far...Too far...but not today
Gaining speed across the way.
“Kho...
Took their turns to Chase and Sit
Way too clear
And the catch was so near
“Kho..” with the slightest sound
Team in ground start the flow
And it was Kho...Kho..

Skills differ, “All is well”

Ground and weather all is well
All the things must be taken together
“Am not fast as you “
“ You are not tall as I” No more cry
No more “climbing -Not safe” cry
No more “Rough ground-Not safe"
No more “Hot Sun -heavy rain “ cry
Thunder clap- team roared
Dirty clothes but medals that shine
This day-all day we speak play

The Boy Who Changed The World

I want to tell you a story about the boy who changed

the world. His name was Norman Borlaug. Norman lived
on a farm in Iowa. He loved to play hide- and-seek with
his little sisters in their father’s cornfields.
Norman was tall and skinny , with hair so light it looked
like the silk that sprouted from the ears of corn. Norman
was very good at hiding in the cornfields. Norman tiptoed
quietly so his sisters couldn’t hear him. He crept along
until he was just close enough to catch them…..

“Gotcha!”
The girls giggled and squealed. “Now , you hide
Norman!”
Norman ran to hide in the fields, careful not to knock
down any cornstalks. Just yesterday his father had
reminded him, “You know, son, we are blessed to have all
this corn. There are many people in the world who do
not have enough to eat.”
What would it be like to be hungry all the time? Norman
wondered as he looked at the endless rows of corn.
There has to be a way this corn can feed the hungry
people, he thought.
Right then and there, Norman decided to change the
world.
Norman learned everything he could about plants.
When he grew up, he worked for a man named
Mr. Wallace. Mr. Wallace said, “Norman, I want you to
use what you learned in school to make special seeds.
Those special seeds will grow into super plants and feed
more people than ordinary plants!”
To make the special seeds, Norman had to go to faraway
places and work in the rain and summer heat, but he
never gave up. Finally, Norman developed the special
seeds that grew into super plants!
Norman’s special seeds of corn and wheat and rice were
sent all over the world. Those special seeds grew into
super plants that fed the hungry people - just like
Norman dreamed about as a boy. And guess what?
Norman saved more than two billion people from
starving.

Two billion!
It’s true… Norman was the boy who changed the world!

Everything you do matters!

JOURNEY OF KDBA
I just stood there in one place frozen, thinking, “Hey I just got
selected and am about to play for the Kancheepuram District
Basketball Team.!”
How awesome was that!
My teammate Harish tapped my shoulders, “Srinikesh, hey
Srinikesh!” I turned my head towards him and then only realized
that I hadn’t been moving.
He had a form in his hands. As he asked me my name and phone
number, I replied to him enthusiastically. I totally did not expect
me getting selected. We were asked to come to the Mahindra
World City, Pudupakkam for the camp.
It was fourteen of us who got selected for the camp in the
Mahindra World School which was located inside Mahindra
World City.
The place was very big. It took us three hours to just travel up and
down, which was pretty awful and boring. Vihaan, Dipin and I
carpooled.
After around ten days of camp, another person walked into the
court. He began chatting with the coach. I just thought he was a
friend or something, but when the coach asked us all to stand in a
line, I found it suspicious.
They began, picking!! I didn’t expect they would pick the team
that day. This was the last filtration. The person who get selected
will “actually” play for Kancheepuram District.
Well, I assumed that I already got selected to play for the district,
but no! I began to get nervous. He began selecting everyone
except, me and two others.
My heart was pounding inside my chest, I felt like I had to
hold it with both hands to prevent it from falling. As a droplet
of sweat raced down my face, I felt a trickle under my chin, and
goose bumps cracking my skin, made me look like I had
chickenpox.
Finally, they picked me!!
I was very excited and jogged towards my team and joined
them on a line. I felt bad for my two other friends who didn’t
get selected. We had three more days of camp and were having
parkour training.
We were informed that the district matches will happen in
Kamaraj College of Engineering and Technology, Virudhunagar.
It was so much fun travelling at night by bus with my friends
and coach. We arrived at the college and we were put up in a
big boys’ hostel. We had continuous matches, some very early
in the morning. We had lots of fun too as we were happy to
see all our parents cheer for us with a huge slogan banner.
Unfortunately, after a good fight in the semi-finals, we lost by
just two points.
Overall it was a wonderful learning experience, and we felt a
sense of responsibility arise in us. We the KDs will come back
with vengeance. Until next time……..

My Experiences in Virudhunagar:

My experience in Virudhunagar taught me many things

including team spirit, adjusting in new locations, making
more friends, learning new cultures etc. I played for
Dharmapuri district because they didn’t have enough players.
I had to go there with my friends, Tanya and Mridhula
We had five matches before we got out (at the quarter finals).
Our matches were easy until we lost against Erode and then
against the home team, Virudhunagar which made us get
knocked out.
We had to stay for our home team, Kancheepuram as they
won their quarter finals and went on to the semi-finals
The stadium, which was an indoor one, with noises bouncing
off the walls and shoes squeaking as players scuttled on the
court - which was below the gallery, was the court where
most of the games were played.
Boys and girls of Kancheepuram, secured 3rd place each, the
only team out of 33, to get their boys and girls team to qualify
for top 4 teams
Dharmapuri district secured 16/33 teams
I’m really looking forward to more of these kind of matches!!

Thank you!!!!
