Make a Bouncy Ball

What you need;

1. 1/2 Teaspoon borax

2. 1 tablespoon cornstarch

3. 1 tablespoon glue

4. 2 tablespoons warm water

5. Food colouring

6. Spoon

7. Plastic containers

Caution! - Borax is not edible, so don’t chew the ball.

What to do:
Step 1: Pour water and borax into a container.
Step 2: Add food colour. Stir the mixture with a spoon until the
borax dissolves.
Step 3: Separately, pour glue, add 1/2 teaspoons of the borax
solution you just made and 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
to the glue. Do not stir it.

Step 4: Leave the mixture alone for 15 seconds and then stir it again
till it becomes too thick to stir.
Step 5: Take the mixture out of the container. Mould it in the shape
of a ball with your hands till it becomes solid.

Kudos to you, young scientist. Your bouncy ball is ready to bounce.

What happens:
This activity demonstrates an interesting chemical reaction, primarily between
the borax and the glue. The borax acts as a “cross-linker” to the polymer
molecules in the glue – basically it creates chains of molecules that stay
together when you pick them up. The cornstarch helps to bind the molecules
together so that they hold their shape better.

Learning Outcome: Learning how the of borax and glue gives rise to a
bouncy ball.
