Do-It-Yourself Geo Apps MOOC

Getting Started with ArcGIS Online

Instructions
Complete this exercise to identify, confirm, and document your credentials for this course.
Note: ArcGIS Online is a dynamic mapping platform. The version of ArcGIS Online that
you will be using for this course may be slightly different from the screenshots you see in
the course materials.

Time to complete
Approximately 15-30 minutes

Technical note
To take advantage of the web-based technologies available in ArcGIS Online, you need to
use a fairly new version of a standard web browser, such as Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari,
or Internet Explorer. Older web browsers may not display your maps correctly.
Note: For information on supported browsers, visit the documentation (https://bit.ly/
2pIIN2T).

Introduction
The goal of this exercise is to have you identify and write down the user names and passwords
(known as credentials) you will use for this course.
We encourage you to create a table like the one below to save this important information you
will need for the duration of the course. The numbers indicate the four pieces of information
you will add as you complete this exercise.

You can print the page and fill out the table, create your own table on paper, or save the
information in any other way you prefer. Taking a few minutes to save this information for
reference now will alleviate frustration later in the course.

Step 1: Access your Esri credentials

Esri credentials provide access to courses like this one and other websites Esri hosts. You
already have Esri credentials (Esri user name and Esri password); you used them to register for
and sign in to access the course.
Here's how to find the user name if you don't recall it right now.

a In the upper-right corner of the webpage showing the course, click My Schedule.

b On the My Schedule page, in the upper-right corner, locate your name and your Esri user
name.

c Write your Esri user name, the name under your formal name, in the space marked (1) in
your table. The password that only you know can go in the space marked (2) if you think
you'll forget it.
You will use these Esri credentials to sign in to the course at www.esri.com/training/my-
schedule. You may want to bookmark that page in your browser so you can return to it when
you are ready to work on the course in the future. That web address (URL) is also included in
the table for reference.

Step 2: Access your ArcGIS credentials

ArcGIS credentials provide access to Esri online mapping services and other Esri software.

Option 1: Using your ArcGIS credentials for this course (for students with existing ArcGIS
organizational accounts)
Some students in this course already have ArcGIS credentials.
If you work in or are studying GIS, you may have ArcGIS Online organizational credentials (not
a free public account). If your existing ArcGIS credentials meet the requirements for this
course, you are welcome to use them to complete this course. Using your existing credentials
means that you will retain all the apps that you build during the course. Please visit this page
(https://bit.ly/2Pp1y4B) to explore this option.
If you meet the requirements, you are ready to use your ArcGIS Online account in Do-It-
Yourself Geo Apps. We suggest you write your user name in the space marked (3) in your
table and optionally, if needed, your password in the space marked (4) for easy reference.
Then, proceed to Step 3 of this exercise.
If your existing ArcGIS credentials do not meet the requirements, you are welcome to use the
student ArcGIS credentials provided for all registered students discussed in Option 2.

Option 2: Accessing your student ArcGIS credentials for this course (for students who do
not have or choose not to use an existing ArcGIS Online organizational account)
We set up ArcGIS credentials for you and everyone else who registered for the course. To use
these credentials, complete the remainder of this exercise to discover your student ArcGIS
user name and set up a password.
Here's an overview of the process, which is detailed on the following pages:

• Open a new private or incognito browser window.

• Retrieve your ArcGIS user name.
• Sign in to ArcGIS Online.
• Change your password.

Open a new private/incognito browser window

a Open another browser window in private or incognito mode.

As you work on this exercise, you most likely have at least one browser window open with a
tab showing the course. We ask that you open another browser window, not a regular old
browser window, but a special kind of window called a private or incognito browser window.
This article (https://bit.ly/2qTQdQL) explains how to open a private or incognito browser
window for many different browsers. (For now, trust us that this will make life easier, but feel
free to read up on the topic if it is new to you.)
Start the sign-in process

b After you have your private/incognito browser window open, browse to www.arcgis.com.

c Verify that you are in a private/incognito window, and in the center of the window, click
Sign In.

Use the Forgot Username option to discover your ArcGIS user name for this course

d Click the Forgot Username link.

We know you didn't forget your user name! How could you? We've not shared it yet! We set
up the user name for you that's connected with your email address, so this is an easy way for
you to query for it.

e Fill in the email address associated with your Esri user name and click Send.

f You'll see a message telling you to check your email; click OK.

Did you register on or after September 5, 2018?, It will take up to two business days to set up
your ArcGIS credentials. If your credentials are not yet set up, either you will receive no response
from your Forgot Username query or the response email will not include a user name for Do-It-
Yourself Geo Apps.

If you are in this situation, please wait one business day and then return to this page to retry the
Forgot Username query and complete the exercise. In the meantime, we encourage you to
explore the other non-exercise parts of this course.

If after two business days you have not successfully queried for and determined your user name,
please contact us via the Have a Question form accessible from the Help tab on the black
navigation bar.

Retrieve your ArcGIS user name (includes "_geoapps") from your email

g Check your email now, as you should have received an email.

The email message includes information about an organizational account for the organization
named Do-It-Yourself Geo Apps. The user name will include the characters "_geoapps." That
is your ArcGIS user name for use during the course. (Please ignore "Esri Access: disabled."
That is the correct setting for the student ArcGIS credentials.)

h In your table, in the space marked (3), write down your ArcGIS user name.

Note: If you do not receive an email within five minutes, check your spam folder for it. If you
still do not find it, contact us via the Have A Question form accessible from the Help option in
the black navigation bar in the course. Please include your full name and current email
address, and we will reply with your ArcGIS user name.
Sign in to ArcGIS Online using your ArcGIS user name
After you have your ArcGIS user name, it's time to sign in to ArcGIS Online for the first time.

i Return to the ArcGIS.com tab in the private/incognito browser window.

j If you clicked OK after querying for your ArcGIS user name, you should see fields to sign
in with your user name and password. If you do not see the fields to sign in, browse to
www.arcgis.com and click Sign In in the center of the window.
We set your temporary password to be password1 (it's also included in the table).

k On screen, fill in the fields with your ArcGIS user name and the temporary password of
password1 (all small letters!), and click Sign In.
Note: If it fails at first, please try a few times; it can be challenging to type correctly when you
do not see the characters in the password.
Change the temporary password to a password of your choice

l After you have signed in, follow the instructions to change your password to one of your
choosing, and also set your security question when prompted.
Record your ArcGIS password for easy reference

m In the table, write your new ArcGIS password in the space marked (4).
You are done using ArcGIS Online for now.

n In the upper-right corner of the private/incognito browser window, click your name and
choose Sign Out.

o Close the private/incognito browser window and proceed to Step 3 of this exercise.

Step 3: Continue the course

Congratulations! You are now finished identifying and documenting your course credentials. If
you wrote the credentials on a piece of paper, we suggest that you (1) put it in a safe place
and (2) take a photo of it with your phone. The photo will help ensure that you always have
your credentials when you need them.
You can take a break now or return to the course.
