Learning intentions (what do I want the children to learn?):

 We are learning the plastics that are found in the sea.
 We are learning to identify impacts on the sea (e.g. pollution, trapped animals).
 We are learning to identify solutions to save the sea.

What do I need to know about the children to support their learning?

 What they already know about plastic pollution (e.g. recycling).

What materials and resources will help children learn?

Check the number of children in the group.
 Prompt cards.
 Objects: plastic versus alternative.
 6x plastic pollution booklets.
 6x boardered writing paper.
 6x plastic bottles and 12x lids (eyes).

Learning experiences:
How will I help children to learn?
 I will introduce the topic and move through it gradually, incorporating art into the
end activity.

How long do I have?

 4 Lessons – Approximately 1 hour each.

How will I approach and implement this lesson? Outline the steps.
Lesson One (Monday 11th March):
 Prompt cards (10 minutes): what do you think is happening? Why do you think this is
happening? Where is this happening? Do you think this is a problem? Why?
 Plastic pollution powerpoint (10 minutes): go through it and explain things to answer the
questions arised from prompt cards.
 Objects (10 minutes): bring in plastic bag versus bag for life, plastic straw verus metal
straw, plastic bottle versus purple metal bottle, one use coffee cup versus reusable
coffee cup. Discuss advantages and disadvantages of each.
 Plastic pollution booklet (25 minutes): do pages 1-3.

from the oceans we believe is the best.
 Plastic pollution booklet (30 minutes): pages 4-5.

 Boardered paper (20 minutes): write about what plastic pollution is, why plastic waste is
bad for the sea, and what better choices we can make to help make the seas clean again.
 Plastic pollution booklet (10 minutes): page 6.
 Plastic bottle fish/jellyfish (1 hour): glue eyes and legs/fins and paint.
Lesson Four (Monday 1st April):

 Plastic bottle fish/jellyfish (1 hour): paint/decorate the bottles.
Assessment and success criteria:
How will I know whether children have learned and met the intentions criteria?
 Students will be able to identify the issues with plastic and their impact on the sea.
 Students will think of solutions (alternatives to plastic) to help create a healthier
environment for the sea.

Evaluation:
How well did the lesson go? What do I need to do next time to enhance learning?
 Have a more narrow focus next time, e.g. just recycling.
 Art project was very successful, discussed learnings throughout and enjoyed the
activity.
