THEORY

Divakar focuses on a contemporary, jazz based approach to music, both in theory and performance.
Jazz as an artform is based on the concept of interaction, which can be approached rhythmically,
melodically or even harmonically. For this however, it is important to understand certain concepts
very common to jazz. Divakar believes that it is important to build a strong foundation in jazz
theory alongside working on the basics of one’s voice to truly be able to understand and become
proficient in jazz. This allows one to imbibe and internalise the nuances, like scatting, and add it to
one’s vocal vocabulary.

PRACTISE SCHEDULE
To this end, it is also important to devise and follow practice schedules specifically tailored to
tackle one’s strengths and weaknesses, without it ever feeling like a chore. One of the most
important aspects of jazz is to listen to jazz music and build one’s repertoire, both of which are
areas where Divakar can help immensely.

PERFORMANCE
Elements of jazz have been applied to various degrees in other genres of music. RnB for example,
borrows rhythmic and harmonic aspects from jazz while gospel borrows the spirit of improvisation
and interaction. Despite these similarities, there are many differences between these genres which
Divakar encourages others to explore and experiment.
