Behold, a Stranger at the door! Rise, touched with gratitude divine;

He gently knocks, has knocked before, Turn out His enemy and thine,
Has waited long, is waiting still: That soul destroying monster, sin,
You treat no other friend so ill. And let the heavenly Stranger in.

But will He prove a Friend indeed? Admit Him, for the human breast
He will; the very Friend you need; Ne’er entertained so kind a Guest;
The Friend of sinners-yes, 'tis He, No mortal tongue their joys can tell
With garments dyed on Calvary. With whom He condescends to dwell.

O lovely attitude! He stands Sovereign of souls, Thou Prince of Peace,

With melting heart and laden hands; O may Thy gentle reign increase:
O matchless kindness! and He shows Throw wide the door, each willing mind;
This matchless kindness to His foes. And be His empire all mankind.
