I got the chance to sit in on an IEP meeting for a student who is in 2nd grade.

The student

IEP centered on academics rather than behavioral. Members of the meeting involved the

Principal, Special Education teacher, grade-level teacher, and Psychologist. The mother was

supposed to attended this meeting but failed to show up on time. Without the mother attendance

the meeting was cut short but all members briefly talk about the student and signed off on the

IEP to go through, showing that all were in agreement that this was the right plan for the student

who is having a trouble understanding topics that are being addressed in the classroom.

Before everyone left, I asked how the meeting would have gone if the mother had showed

up? I was clear the Special Education teacher and grade-level teacher had the biggest roles to

play. The Special Education teacher would have told the mother what goals were put in place for

helping the student in the classroom. The Special Education teacher stated to me that she usually

has two goals per subject so that students are not overwhelmed with unattainable goals. The

Special Education teacher would then explain the accommodations that the student would be

receiving both the Special Education classroom and her grade-level classroom. Unfortunately, I

could not know exactly what goals were made or the accommodation for the student without the

mother’s approval.

This would then lead to the grade-level teacher explaining how the student is doing in the

classroom and her present level of academics in all subject, to which is struggling to understand

in all topics. The Special Education teacher would explain to the mother of the rights that the

student and members involved have in allowing that student to succeed. After this, the Special

Education teacher would ask if the student’s mother had any question about the IEP and the

actions that will be taken before and after the IPE has done through. After the meeting is finish,

the Special Education teacher would write a reflection of what happened during the meeting.
