The First Amendment

The first amendment states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,

or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the

right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the Government for a redress of

grievances.” The first amendment is one of nine other amendments that make up the bill of rights

to the U.S Constitution. The first amendment relates to me because I am a journalist. In other

countries around the world, they are told what they can and cannot publish in their newspapers.

However, here in the United States, we have freedom of the press under the first amendment.

Freedom of the press, also known as freedom of the media is the principle that communication

and expression through various media, including printed and electronic media, especially

published materials, should be considered a right to be exercised freely. As a student, specifically

a journalism student, I utilize the first amendment daily. I write several articles, not only for class

but also for the school newspaper. I utilize the freedom of the press as I write because I have no

fear of the consequence of retribution when I write. I also write without limits or constraints

from others. Therefore I can not be penalized for my work. As a professional in my career, I will

utilize the first amendment by creating content at the discretion of myself and work superiors

without fearing extream consequences of any kind. I intend to abide by the first amendment by

ensuring that any content I create is my own without any constraint or fear.
