CMYK_100% and CMYK_Gravure applications are designed for optimizing your CMYK print densities at each
press-setting and for computing the appropriate printing forms engraving curves, in order to match any
ISO 12647-2 (offset), ISO 12647-3 (newspapers), ISO 12647-4 (gravure), ISO 12647-6 (Flexography) or
G7/IDEAlliance (US interpretation of ISO12647-2) standard. In addition, they allow you establishing and
matching your own CUSTOM CMYK or non-CMYK inks print standards, that can be more ambitious and/or
better adapted to your print works using special inks and/or papers.
Setting a printing press for matching ISO CMYK standards or any other arbitrary chromatic response is quite
fast, easy, and cheap, as long as you are using the right methods and the right tools:

1. In a first step you adjust each CMYK solid ink density, by playing on the ink thickness or its concentration, in
order each ink matches the target Lab color imposed by your public or private CMYK standard.

This step is crucial for any traditional or digital print process; because its fixes the print process dot gains that
largely depend on the solid ink’s thicknesses or viscosities. A classical mistake in Graphic Industries is to neglect
this first step, although producing good prints on a press or a digital printer with poorly set solid inks and
trappings, is nearly impossible. Another classical mistake consists into modifying the solid inks densities for
improving the print run gray balance, which is never necessary when your print curves have been properly
tailored to your press characteristics.

CMYK_100% application instantly computes and displays your optimal solid inks densities and/or
concentrations corrections for matching any ISO12647-2-3-4-6 or IDEAlliance or CUSTOM CMYK standard.

2. Once you have set you CMYK inks to their optimal densities, you have to measure your average press dot
gains in this printing configuration, and compute a specific engraving curve for each printing form that will
allow you matching the target TVI curves imposed by your public or private CMYK standard. This will ensure
excellent color matching on not only your primary inks and their superimpositions, but also on all CMYK
screened tone.

CMYK_Gravure application allows you controlling that your average test print run is good, and programming
the appropriate printing forms engraving curves in your prepress workflow, for matching any ISO12647-2-3-4-6
or IDEAlliance or CUSTOM CMYK standard.

You can easily incorporate the CMYK press-setting test charts supplied with CMYK_100% and CMYK_Gravure
and free CMYK_Print_&_Proof applications into your own CMYK test form or you can download our universal
CMYK print test forms at following link:
http://www.iso12647solution.com/Colorsource_universal_CMYK_print_test_formes.htm

As a conclusion, it is quite easy matching ISO12647-x or IDEAlliance or any CUSTOM CMYK or other inks standard.

You can achieve the required test print run in less than half an hour when you get used to this routine
operation, that later allows you instant and easy production press settings.

Colorsource smart applications not only bring you the highest print quality you need today, but also much
better costs and productivity, while avoiding you affording many uselessly expensive or obsolete equipment
such as CMYK densitometers or non-connected pressroom spectrophotometers!

Quite useful in this difficult period for business!

Installation and general using rules:
Please read carefully the "Software installation and brief description Guide".

Using CMYK_100% application:

Press setting charts supplied with CMYK_100%:
For MeasureTool (our preferred application), and i1Profiler measurement applications:
(For Eye-One Pro, Eye-One Pro 2, EFI ES-1000, EFI ES-2000 or other 45/0° spectrophotometer)
• CMYK_RGB.tif chart:

• CMYK_RGB_CMYK75%.tif chart:

• CMYK_100%_and_CMYK_Gravure_Single_line_chart_H7mm.tif or .eps chart:

Their fast measurement (only one scan) allows determining instantaneously the four optimal printing densities
of your solid C, M, Y, and K colors, with taking into account the measured spectral réflectances of the inks and
paper.
Above charts are described by their respective CGATS reference files "CMYK_100%_ref_CMYK_RGB.txt",
"CMYK_100%_ref_CMYK_RGB_CMYK75%.txt" and "CMYK_100%_ref_Single_line_32_patches_chart.txt"
These three CGATS reference files are also memorized in the CMYK_100% application Charts tab.
The CMYK_100%_and_CMYK_Gravure_Single_line_chart_H7mm.tif chart is also available as an .eps file and
can be used with both CMYK_100% and CMYK_Gravure applications: Quite convenient for continuous print
process because it allows saving a lot of paper. Because you can use this chart on most of your commercial
print runs and check and compute if necessary, your gravure curves by using these standard production runs.
For easy access in the MeasureTool "Chart Measuring" pull-down menu, you can copy them for example in
ProfileMaker installation directory: Program files[(x86)]\X-Rite\ProfileMaker 5.0.10\Reference data\Linearization.
If you want to use other chart measurement application software, please see the details in the Installation and
brief description guide.

For ColorPort measurement application: (Any 45/0° spectrophotometer you can drive with ColorPort)
• CMYK_RGB_Colorport.tif chart:

• CMYK_RGB_CMYK75%_Colorport.tif chart:

© Colorsource 2010-2019 - CMYK_100% and CMYK_Gravure applications User's Guide - May 2019 – Revision 11. Page 3/38
COLORSOURCE S.A.R.L. - R.C.S. ÉVRY 453 219 768 - SIRET 453 219 768 00018 - CODE APE 7022Z
Their fast measurement (only one scan) also allows determining instantaneously the four optimal printing
densities of your solid C, M, Y, and K colors, with taking into account the measured spectral réflectances of the
inks and paper.
These charts are described by CMYK_100%_CMYK_RGB_CP.xml and CMYK_100%_CMYK_RGB_CMYK75%_CP.xml
files you should place into Documents/ColorPort_Resources/Refs/cmyk folder.

Please see the operating details in the Installation and brief description guide.

Other charts you can use with CMYK_100%:

For your convenience, you can import as well into CMYK_100% application the spectral measurement files of
the Fogra MediaWedge 2, Fogra MediaWedge 3, IDEAlliance ISO12647-7, and Colorsource ISO12647-7
classical CMYK control bars supplied with your free Colorsource CMYK_Print_&_Proof application.
You can also measure print works using four non-CMYK inks. In this case, you need of course specifying and
using your own CUSTOM four colors target.
For importing a very large CMYK chart measurement file into CMYK_100% application, you can first extract
automatically all useful spectral data from your large measurement file by using our free ICC_Normalize
application.

CMYK_100% application tabs:

The Measure tab allows pasting or importing your chart spectral measurements file.
The Control drop-down menu allows you choosing all ISO12647-2, 12647-3, 12647-4, 12647-6 or
G7/IDEAlliance standard target colors, or your own set of CUSTOM target colors. You can import your
measurements file here as well by pressing the Import button.
This tab displays the measured colors and densities of each solid inks (100%), its optimal density for best
possible color matching, the necessary correction of ink density or thickness or concentration, the minimal and
maximal authorized densities and concentrations for matching your chosen ISO12647-2, 12647-3, 12647-4,
12647-6 or G7/IDEAlliance or CUSTOM target, within your specified tolerance.
Checking the RGB superimpositions is also quite useful for wet offset print processes where you can be OK on
solid inks and bad on their superimpositions (e.g. in case of blanket pressure problem).
The Control tab displays your results:

Target ISO 12647 D50 Lab colors are the Self-Backing values with OBA correction: They are the ones present in your ISO CMYK ICC profiles.

The Custom tab contains the CUSTOM target colors set that you can specify for matching a CMYK target other
than ISO12647-2-3-4-6 or G7/IDEAlliance, or for matching four colors non-CMYK inks target. This allows you as
well matching any new coming ISO 12647-2-3-4-6 standard, even before Colorsource have updated your
application:
For specifying your CUSTOM aim colors, you can type-in their Lab values, or paste or import a variety of real or
virtual spectral or colorimetric CGATS measurement files:
1. You can use as CUSTOM colors any spectral or colorimetric measurement data file of an
existing CMYK chart (E.g. the measurement file of a Fogra or else control bar on a proof).
If you import into the Custom tab a text file containing the averaged measurement data of a
same chart measured on many reference printed copies.

2. You can as well compute with free Colorlab application your CUSTOM reference colors by
using any existing reference CMYK or 4 colors ICC profile. This user’s guide explains you later
how to extract easily your CUSTOM target colors from any ISO or non-ISO CMYK or 4 colors
reference I.C.C. profile.

The Charts tab is a backup of the three CGATS reference files allowing generating and measuring the standard
application's CMYK charts. If needed you can export any of these CGATS reference files by pressing the
Export Ref.txt button
The Preferences tab allows you:
• Choosing the application language (English or French),
The application detects your keyboard language and configures the appropriate language at first launch. You
have to save your application ("Ctrl s" or File/Save) for avoiding the application searching the language at each
following launch.
• Selecting which ISO targets will be displayed in the Control tab pull-down menu,
• Activating the paper optical brighteners' corrections for computing your papers Lab colors, which we
recommend,
• Selecting measuring in Black-Baking (BB) or Self-Backing (SB) mode, and selecting independently
displaying the color and density results in Black-Baking (BB) or Self-Backing (SB) mode,
• Inputting standard or non-standard tolerances (Nonstandard tolerances are displayed in red),
• Inputting your RGB monitor measured parameters for calibrated color display of all measured and
target colors.

A few technical details about above choices:

1) Paper Optical Brighteners Correction:
Allows you using optical brightener's agents (OBA) correction for computing the Lab color of your papers.
We recommend this choice because all ISO12647-x CMYK ICC profiles that are used for producing the color
separations contain corrected paper measurement values when necessary: For example, the raw offset paper
Lab value if much bluer than what you perceive so that ISO ICC profiles contain corrected values otherwise the

color proofs would show a strong blue cast. If you do not use OBA correction your measured paper tint on
offset papers will always be out of tolerance.
CMYK_100% detects the optical brighteners and computes the paper Lab color that displays well on a
calibrated soft proof or hard proof. When selected, this correction also applies to the paper of your CUSTOM
color targets.
2) Measure your print on black background: (Black-Backing):
ISO12647-x standards publish CMYK target colors Lab measured with Black-Backing. This is a big mistake
because these colors are not the ones we perceive when we read and moreover the considerably depend on
each paper opacity and thickness, unlike the Self-backing values. So that nobody is using these BB values and
all published characterization files such as Fogra xx, IDEAlliance and ISO standard CMYK ICC profiles are using
SB measured target values.
Consequently:
If you measure in SB mode (Self-Backing) (Which is the most convenient way!), your CMYK_100%
application directly compares your measures with the reference ISO12647 SB target values (Or to your own
CUSTOM target you have to measure in SB mode).
If you measure in BB mode (Black-Backing), your CMYK_100% application first computes the Lab colors
you would have got if measuring in SB mode, and then compares them with the reference ISO12647 SB
target values (Or to your own CUSTOM target you have to measure in SB mode).
For computing the SB colors and density values from your BB measurements, CMYK_100% only needs one
more measurement: The measurement of your paper in SB mode:

You need pasting your paper SB measurement in the preferences tab. Results will be very accurate when you
paste spectral measurement data. You can as well use colorimetric Lab D50 data but the results will be less
accurate. If you input no paper SB measurement at all, or delete and existing measurement (Select and
suppress), or input aberrant data (e.g. L =0), the software will use a typical opacity held in memory that depend
on the ISO12647 target you have chosen. But of course, the real paper opacity largely depends on its thickness.
But in the press room it is much easier measuring in SB mode, because you scarcely find a large sheet of black
paper! So that usual and natural spectral measurement condition is using self-backing.

But in these SB conditions we are often asked the following question: "Ok but if I measure in SB mode
CMYK_100% will compute optimal printing densities on white background that I cannot use with my press
room scanning densitometer that measured on black-background":
Your CMYK_100% application offers you the ONLY good answer: You can as well measure SB mode and
display all color and density results you would have got if measuring in BB mode. For computing the BB
values from your SB measurements, CMYK_100% only need one more measurement: The measurement of
your paper in BB mode:

CMYK_100% allows you measuring SB or BB, and independently displaying all results SB or BB.
CMYK_100% will allow you controlling by yourself that, unless you print a paper with very low opacity, your
computed optimal CMYK printing densities have shown little changes whether you measure SB or BB! The
Lab colors show much larger changes than the optimal print densities but you do not care!
So that you will most of the time find that measuring SB or BB make very little changes in your press optimal
CMYK density settings.
At least this new function of your CMYK_100% allows you checking this fact and allows closing very sterile
debates and stupid sales arguments that too many Graphic Industries Vendors and their ISO committees
love.

When selecting “CUSTOM” your target colors are the Custom tab specified colors.
If needed these target colors can be computed by using the CMYK_100%_ref_CMYK_RGB_CMYK75%.txt
reference file and your target CMYK ICC profile (See detailed work procedure in this manual page 22). Installing
new target colors in the Custom tab can then be done by simple copy and paste or direct import.
Your CMYK_100% application can easily be parameterized and saved with your CUSTOM colors under some
significant name such as for example “CMYK_100%_Euroscale.exe” or "USSheetFed_Coated.exe" for matching
your press to these private Adobe CMYK standards.

Other uses of CMYK_100% application:

You can use as well CMYK_100% application for checking any control bar existing on any CMYK print:
For example with MeasureTool, use the application in “patch mode", and read your patches one by one where
ever they are located on your CMYK print to be checked, without forgetting measuring the 0% paper white.
You can use as well this “patch by patch” measurement mode, for optimally setting your two colors presses
with CMYK_100% application: After first paper pass, just measure C 100%, M 100%, paper (0%) and Blue
(C+M) 100%.
Measuring only one CMYK_RGB.tif or CMYK_RGB_CMYK75%.tif or Single_line_chart_H7mm.tif chart is
enough on any press to get instantly the required ink densities and /or concentrations corrections.
By using an appropriate CGATS reference file, you can paste or import as well to Measure tab the
measurement files of many consecutive CMYK_RGB.tif or CMYK_RGB_CMYK75%.tif charts, which the
application will average.
A sample reference file allowing measuring one to ten charts is supplied in the application distribution kit on
the web. This may only be useful when you are setting up a new CMYK or four colors printing standard on your
press, and you want to base your new standard target colors on average press measurements.
For importing very large CMYK chart measurement files into CMYK_100% application, you can first extract
automatically all useful spectral data from your large measurement files by using our free ICC_Normalize
application.

Practical use for setting your solid inks densities:

If you are using an offset press, check your CTP calibration with PLATE application, or with a plate reader, and
then produce your CMYK plates with "straight" engraving curves not modifying the plates (i.e. File x% gives x%
on the plates). Alternatively, produce your plates with a reasonable pre-correction curve such as 50 % in
CMYK_Gravure Declare_correction tab if you are using stochastic screening:

Computing the optimal CMYK densities:
At press setting, scan the control bar:

MeasureTool is our preferred application.

Please see the Installation and brief description guide
for more details, if you want to use the free
measurement applications ColorPort or i1Profiler.
Do not forget configuring MeasureTool as shown
hereafter (See the installation guide for more details):
Import your measurement by pressing the Import button
in Measure or Control tab.

Measuring a first sheet, (even with very poorly set inks densities), shows the density adjustments to be made,
as on above example:
• C 100% must be increased from 0.78 to 1.34,
• M 100% must be increased from 0.87 to 1.31,
• Y 100% must be increased from 1.08 to 1.17,
• K 100% must be increased from 1.38 to 1.61.
Mind that for a same target standard, the optimal densities considerably depend on the inks and paper you are
using! For example, for offset printing on thick matte coated paper, CMYK optimal densities 1.34, 1.31, 1.17,
1.61 may become 1.40, 1.38, 1.28, 1.69 with different CMYK inks, even with two inks sets meeting
ISO 2846-x: 2007 standard.
Then set your offset press ink keys in order to match the recommended optimal densities.
When printing with a gravure press, you can adjust the solid ink densities by playing on their concentration,
because you can hardly modify their 100% thickness. Following above example, you should modify your inks
concentrations as follows:
• C 100% concentration should be multiplied by 2.00 (200%),
• M 100% concentration should be multiplied by 1.70 (170%),
• Y 100% concentration should be multiplied by 1.12 (112%),
• K 100% 100% concentration should be multiplied by 1.21 (121%),

COLORSOURCE S.A.R.L. - R.C.S. ÉVRY 453 219 768 - SIRET 453 219 768 00018 - CODE APE 7022Z
Then print at least 20 “good prints": These prints are OK on 100% CMYK but not yet on their screened tones.
Using CMYK_Gravure application with its 10% steps CMYK test chart will allow you computing the four
appropriate printing forms engraving curves.
If CMYK_100% application foresees that printing at optimal density does not allow one or more inks
matching your target Lab color within the ISO 5 ΔE76 tolerance, this may mean that your inks set do not
comply with ISO 2846-x: 2007 specifications, or that you are printing on some exotic paper (which can be
quite legitimate) or that your press ink pot is polluted and a press wash is needed. (E.g. can happen on
Yellow ink when polluted by Magenta).
CMYK_100% application also allows you using ΔECMC2:1, or even more relevant ΔE2000 visual distance, which
will drive you to slightly different optimal CMYK densities, which are even more accurate in terms of final visual
matching. You should use ΔE2000, even if this is not quite conforming ISO12647 and IDEAlliance standards that
still specify using the obsolete ΔE76 visual distance (they are always 15 years late).

Please note that color saturated inks may be printed with excellent visual matching even if using very bad
densities. This is why Colorsource applications give you an alert not only if your target colors are not
matched, but also if they are match with a too bad ink thickness or concentration.

Using the CMYK_RGB_CMYK75%.tif chart:

This chart allows you knowing not only your optimal print densities, but also your rough 75% print contrasts.
When you set a press for matching an ISO12647-2-3-4-6 or IDEAlliance standard by purely densitometric
methods and using ISO 2846-x: 2007 inks, the final print contrast is imposed by the standard target TVI curves.
So that using the appropriate correction curves for your printing forms will lead to final 75% print contrasts
that can be anticipated. In this case, monitoring your print contrasts while setting your solid densities is not
critical. (This as long as your press is in good mechanical conditions…).
However, measuring an abnormally low print contrast when you are using the appropriate solid inks
densities specified by CMYK_100% application during a test print run may alert you that very strong print
forms correction curves will be necessary, which you should avoid for the sake of your printing accuracy and
stability.
The CMYK_RGB_CMYK75%.tif chart allows you monitoring your 75% print contrasts from first step of your test
print run. A too weak print contrast can show you that your ink pigments concentration is too low, which can
happen even when offset printing.
Moreover, this chart is very useful when you want to establish your own CUSTOM CMYK or 4 colors print
standard. For example, for establishing a high-density CMYK print standard on thick coated paper, you can push
your densities to the maximal possible print contrast and even further, and then retain as your new target
colors the highly saturated Lab colors you have reached on CMYK and RGB. (You can then paste or import your
spectral measurement file to the Custom tab for specifying your new standard!).
In a second step, CMYK_100% application allows you increasing appropriately your inks pigment concentration
in order to match your high-density CMYK CUSTOM standard with lower ink thicknesses, in order to match this
CUSTOM standard with better print contrasts, before you compute the appropriate and quite reasonable
correction curves with CMYK_Gravure application.

Using the CMYK_100%_and_CMYK_Gravure_Single_line chart:

© Colorsource 2010-2019 - CMYK_100% and CMYK_Gravure applications User's Guide - May 2019 – Revision 11. Page 12/38
COLORSOURCE S.A.R.L. - R.C.S. ÉVRY 453 219 768 - SIRET 453 219 768 00018 - CODE APE 7022Z
You can use this chart with CMYK_100% and CMYK_Gravure applications. One single scan allows computing
your optimal densities with CMYK_100% for setting your solid inks. The CMYK_Gravure Charts tab contains the
appropriate reference file allowing you measuring 1 to 15 charts, in order CMYK_Gravure can compute your
gravure correction curves. If necessary CMYK_Gravure takes into account the existing correction curves so that
you can easily use CMYK_100%_and_CMYK_Gravure_Single_line chart on normal production print run, in
order to check the existing correction curves and update them if necessary.

Using CMYK_Gravure application:

Press-setting charts supplied for CMYK_Gravure:
For MeasureTool (our preferred application) or i1Profiler
(For Eye-One Pro, Eye-One Pro 2, EFI ES-1000, EFI ES-2000 or other 45/0° spectrophotometer)
• CMYK_Gravure_chart.tif chart:
After you have set your solid inks densities with CMYK_100%, the fast measurement of this chart, (only three-
line scans), allows computing the four printing forms engraving curves allowing matching your target TVI
curves. TVI (Tone Value Increase) curves are named as well “gradation curves".

This chart is described by the CGATS reference file "CMYK_Gravure_ref_one_off_3_lines_chart.txt". This text
reference file is also memorized in the Charts application tab.
Please note that if you measure only one CMYK_Gravure_chart.tif chart by using above reference file, you will
not get very accurate engraving curves: You need to measure this chart on a large number of good CMYK
copies.
This is quite easy, by using for example MeasureTool with following reference file:
"CMYK_Gravure_ref_3_lines_chart_read_1_to_15.txt": This reference file describes above chart replicated
fifteen times.
For easy access in the MeasureTool "Chart Measuring" pull-down menu, you can copy all charts reference files
for example in following ProfileMaker installation directory:
Program files[(x86)]\X-Rite\ProfileMaker 5.0.10\Reference data\Linearization.
Measure at least one chart, but if using MeasureTool you can measure an unspecified number (E.g. 3 charts of
3 lines) and then stop: (Stop, then File/ Save as...)

You can now import your spectral measurement file by pressing the Import button in Measure or Control tab.
CMYK_Gravure application will average the number of charts you have measured. We strongly recommend
measuring many copies because no print process is perfectly repetitive and we are only interested by the
average print process behavior.
For using other chart measurement applications, please see the Colorsource software installation and brief
description guide.

For ColorPort measurement application: (Any 45/0° spectrophotometer ColorPort can drive)
• CMYK_Gravure_chart_Colorport.tif chart:

After you have set your solid inks densities with CMYK_100%, fast measurement of this chart also allows you
computing the four CMYK printing forms engraving curves allowing matching your target TVI curves.
This chart is described by the files "CMYK_Gravure_1_chart_ref_CP.xml", "CMYK_Gravure_
15_charts_ref_CP.xml" and "CMYK_Gravure_30_charts_ref_CP.xml" to be placed in your
Documents/ColorPort_Resources/Refs/cmyk folder. They respectively allow you measuring with ColorPort
one, fifteen, or thirty CMYK copies.
Mind that, as indicated by the black start line added by ColorPort, above ColorPort chart, that we supply as an
example, should be scanned from right to left, starting from line 1.
For more details, see the software installation and brief description guide.

Other press-setting charts CMYK_Gravure can use:

• CMYK_100%_and_CMYK_Gravure_Single_line chart:

• Other charts:
For your convenience, you can paste or import as well to CMYK_Gravure the spectral measurement files of
Fogra MediaWedge 2, Fogra MediaWedge 3, IDEAlliance ISO12647-7 or Colorsource ISO12647-7 classical
control bars, that are supplied with your free Colorsource CMYK_Print_&_Proof control application.
You can also paste or import different CMYK measurement files, such as for example the average CMYK
spectral characterization file of a press that has been established for computing its ICC profile, or 5% or other
stepping press linearization charts, or why not the CMYK_100% measurement files.
For importing a very large CMYK chart measurement file into CMYK_Gravure application, you can first extract
automatically all useful spectral data from your large measurement file by using our free ICC_Normalize
application.
However, for ISO12647-2-3-4-6 or G7/IDEAlliance press settings, we recommend you using in a first step the
CMYK_Gravure dedicated CMYK chart that provides excellent results and can quickly be measured on
numerous good printed copies (i.e. good Solid Ink Densities), with only three scans per copy.
You can also measure four colors prints with non-CMYK inks. In this case, you need of course specifying and
using your own CUSTOM standard.

The Control tab allows checking and validating the average quality of the measured print run copies:

The pull-down menu allows selecting the target ISO 12647-2, ISO 12647-3, ISO 12647-4, ISO 12647-6,
G7/IDEAlliance, or CUSTOM colors of the application. The appropriate four target TVI curves are set
automatically according the target colors you choose, as long as you choose STANDARD target TVI curves in the
Gravure_10% tab.
This tab is computing the average densities and colors of your measured print run and its optimal print
densities at minimal visual distances to your target. This in order to check the measured run printing
parameters are valid for computing good and accurate print forms correction curves.
Using a print run displaying here wrong solid densities or ink thickness or concentration would produce bad
printing forms correction curves, because dot gains of most print processes strongly depend on the solid ink
thicknesses.
That is why alerts are displayed and reminded in Gravure and Graphic application tabs if one or more inks of
your measured average test print run poorly matches the solid target colors, or does match the target colors
but with bad thickness or concentration.

The Gravure_10% tab displays your four computed engraving curves by 10% steps:
If you choose STANDARD, the standard target TVI curves of your chosen ISO12647-2-3-4-6 or IDEAlliance or
CUSTOM standard are used as target TVI curves for computing your four printing forms gravure curves.

Customizing your CMYK_Gravure application:
Choose CUSTOM target in the Control tab pull-down menu:
The Custom tab contains your CUSTOM target colors set, when you want matching a target other than
ISO12647-2-3-4 or IDEAlliance, or four non-CMYK color target. This allows you as well matching any new
coming ISO 12647-x standard, even before Colorsource have updated your application.
Specify your CUSTOM standard measured in SB mode.

These target colors without CMYK device values have to be extracted from a CMYK ICC profile by using one of the two authorized reference CMYK file of the "Charts" tab. Please see User's guide.
Your CUSTOM standard can be specified here by pasting any target colorimetric or spectral measurement file, or be extracted from any target ICC profile. Please see Users guide.
Please note that when you specify your CUSTOM standard by colorimetric values, only the XYZ columns are used and not the Lab D50 values.
The decimal separator of your measures should be a dot.

For specifying your CUSTOM target colors set, you can type-in their XYZ values, and more easily import a large
variety of real or virtual spectral or colorimetric measurement files:
1. You can use as CUSTOM target any spectral or colorimetric measurement data of an existing reference
CMYK or four colors chart. (E.g., the measurement files of 15 CMYK_Gravure_chart.tif charts on 15
copies of a reference print, or an average press characterization measurement file established for
computing an ICC profile, or the colorimetric measurement file of a control bar measured on a CMYK
color proof!).
For importing a very large CMYK chart measurement file into CMYK_Gravure Custom tab, you can first
extract automatically all useful spectral data from your large measurement file by using our free
ICC_Normalize application.
2. You can as well compute with free Colorlab application your CUSTOM target colors by using any
existing reference CMYK or four colors ICC profile. This user’s guide explains you later how to extract
easily your CUSTOM target colors from any ISO or non-ISO reference I.C.C. profile.

If selecting CUSTOM standard for target colors and STANDARD target TVI curves in Gravure_10% tab,
CMYK_Gravure computes its target TVI curves from your CUSTOM spectral or colorimetric data:

Please note that computing target TVI curves from colorimetric data will only give you accurate enough results
for CMYK offset print processes, because the correlation between apparent Lab colors and densities
performed by CMYK_Gravure is only designed for offset printing.
This is quite convenient for extracting target TVI curves from a CMYK offset ICC profile containing no spectral
data, such as Adobe Euroscale Coated. You have of course an alternative solution: Set your press matching a
well-documented print standard such as ISOcoated v2, and then simulate Euroscale Coated by using both
CMYK ICC profiles in your prepress workflow.
This is useful as well for using colorimetric measurements on a CMYK digital proof as a target (Because spectral
dot gains of a digital proof have nothing to do with spectral dot gains of your offset press, so that it is much
better using the CMYK proof apparent colors and compute from these colors the press target dot gains.)

The Custom_TVI tab allows inputting four specific custom target TVI curves you want to use, instead of the
STANDARD or other classical target TVI curves the application offers you in its Gravure_10% tab. For using your
custom target TVI curves, select CUSTOM_TVI in the Gravure_10% tab pull-down menu:

CMYK_Gravure application can easily be parameterized with a CUSTOM CMYK or non-CMYK standard and
saved under some significant name, such as for example “CMYK_Gravure_Euroscale.exe” for matching a
private CMYK standard such as the private Adobe “Euroscale” CMYK standard.
This is quite useful, because remember ISO12647-2-3-4-6 and IDEAlliance standards are only specifying the
average figures any Print House can reach for various print process configurations, and NOT what can be
achieved with best possible color gamut on a printing press.

Determining the CMYK engraving curves for matching
ISO12647-2-3-4-6 or IDEAlliance standards:
You can build your own CMYK test form including the CMYK charts we supply or your own test charts (provided
you build the appropriate reference files). Or you can use one of the free ready-to-use Colorsource CMYK print
test forms available at: http://www.iso12647solution.com/Colorsource_universal_CMYK_print_test_formes.htm

If this test form is too large, do not resize it but crop it (or use one of the smaller SRA3 test forms):

© Colorsource 2010-2019 - CMYK_100% and CMYK_Gravure applications User's Guide - May 2019 – Revision 11. Page 23/38
COLORSOURCE S.A.R.L. - R.C.S. ÉVRY 453 219 768 - SIRET 453 219 768 00018 - CODE APE 7022Z
Do not forget adding an ink keys setting control bar at imposition stage if you own dedicated measurement
equipment. But please check that the solid density you measure on a solid color in the test form (E.g. on the
four solid colors bands down the test form) are the same your dedicated ink keys settings system does
measure on the ink key control bar you have added at imposition stage. Because defective offset plate
mounting often results into bad measurements of your dedicated ink keys setting system on paper edge
control bars. In this case, only the densities and colors you measure inside the test form are valid.
You will find as well that some ink keys setting measurement systems are bugged and give you bad density
setting recommendations, while Colorsource applications give you the good setting recommendations,
allowing you programming properly your ink key control bar readers target densities.
Once your solid inks densities have been properly set thanks to CMYK_100% application, produce 20 to 30
good prints and then measure the 10% steps test charts dedicated to CMYK_Gravure application:

Etc.

Save your spectral measurement file and paste it or import it to CMYK_Gravure Measure tab.
Now declare the four printing curves you have used for producing the print run you are measuring:

According to your preferences, the Optical Brightners correction is active for computing the paper tint. 15_Copies_without_correction_curves_ISOcoated_v2.txt

It displays for each 100% primary color:

• The average ΔE2000 visual distance Vs the ISO target colors (E.g. above 1.1 for C 100%),
• The density of the average test print run (1.43 for C 100%),
• The optimal print density of the average test print run (1.45 for C 100%),
• The optimal ink thickness or concentration of the average test print run (102% for Cyan),
• The minimal ΔE2000 visual distance that you would get by printing at ideal densities (1.1 for C 100%),
• The min and max authorized densities if you fix a 2.0 ΔE2000 tolerance (1.35 to 1.55 for C 100%).
On above example:
C, M, Y and K D50 2° Lab solid colors are well in ISO 12647-2 tolerances for thick matte or glossy coated
paper since their ΔE2000 visual distance is very low and more importantly ink thicknesses are near to ideal:
Your average test print run densities are close enough to ideal for your four primary colors.

If the Control tab shows that the colorimetry of your test print run is not good on a solid color, the computed
engraving curve for the corresponding plate will be bad, because measured print dot gains depend a lot on
the solid ink thicknesses. It is thus essential that you produce your test prints with enough near to ideal solid
inks densities. So that if the Control tab shows excellent color matching BUT poor ink thickness or
concentration on one or more inks, the appropriate alerts are also given.
The Gravure_10% tab displays the necessary CMYK printing forms correction curves by 10% steps:

• The Measured apparent dot area ("Measured ink") and Target dot area (“Target Curve"),
• The dot areas you should measure on each printing form when the appropriate correction curve is
used on your prepress workflow (Columns “New gravure curves").
On above example Y40% file value is measured 65.1 % on the average test print run when 53.0 % is wanted:
when using the appropriate yellow engraving curve, you should measure 30.0 % on the yellow plate on a
40.0 % specified patch (3rd column “New gravure curves "). In all cases, knowing your gravure curves allows
you checking each printing form have been properly produced using the good gravure curve, by measuring a
control bar on the printing form.

Programming the correction curves in your prepress workflow

software:
Please note there are TWO ways of programming the CMYK_Gravure results into your prepress workflow
software: E.g. let's look bellow for Cyan ink:
A) You can use the two columns B) Or you can use the two columns
"Measured Cyan" and its "Target Curve": "File %" and "New gravure curve Cyan":

Measure Target:
d: Cyan Curve A:

The second way is much more convenient, because it allows you updating easily of your current print
correction curves, by measuring any commercial print run using these curves, without needing making a new
test print run, thanks to the Declare_correction tab functions.

Checking your printing forms correction curves:

Such a print run for checking above computed engraving curves is not mandatory, because properly used
Colorsource software provides very reliable results at first try. However, making a verification print run may
be quite useful for training purpose and more importantly for convincing the press Conductors of trusting these
modern press-setting methods based on instrumentation.
The Control tab should display good color match for all patches including solid colors, trapping colors and
screened tones: Your CMYK printing press is now matching your target CMYK standard:

• Above example shows the 100% (C+M) blue color is bad, because the Magenta blanket has been
changed between the test print and production runs, and its pressure is set too high.
• Above example shows as well that despite excellent visual matching (1.1 ΔE2000), the Yellow ink
thickness is far from optimal!
This shows that you should use CMYK_100% software FOR EACH PRESS SETTING and not only for your test
print runs, for checking properly each print run solid densities and trappings!
Potential slight residual mismatches can be easily explained by using slightly different solid inks density during
the test print run with no curves and the verification print with curves, which is quite coherent with the Control
or Graphic tab displays of both print runs:

You can see above that 40% Cyan has been put at 29.6 % on the plate (blue column) as requested by the test
print run. You can read the updated gravure curve in the "New gravure curves" columns: Now 40% Cyan
should be put at 29.7 % on the plate.
Of course, production gravure curves (blue columns) being nearly identical to "New gravure curves" you do
not need modifying your current production correction curves.
The big advantage is that this process would allow your knowing immediately your new gravure curves if
needed, without making a new test print run, and programming them into your PDF workflow:

Important note about paper tints and offset (uncoated) papers:
Please note that even when perfectly setting your press to match an ISO 12647-2 offset standard, you will often
find out of ISO tolerances paper whites, because there are excellent white papers with paper tints not
matching ISO standards, and you should not worry.
This problem is aggravated with uncoated white offset papers, because their whiteness is obtained by using
strong optical brighteners (OBA's). And the paper tint written is ISO 12647 press characterization files and ICC
profiles IS NOT the actual Lab paper tint that has been measured in M0 conditions!
Because the true M0 absolute Lab D50 color of these papers is often very bluish (and the M1 paper tint is even
more bluish showing using M1 does not solve any problem!), ISO 12647 Committee have decided using far
less bluish paper tints, in order the color proofing systems using theses ISO ICC profile as source profile would
not produce a far too blue simulated paper tint on the proof.
This is a limit of ISO 12647-x standards, which are not based on publishing spectral reference data but only
colorimetric data. And fixing standard ISO paper tints only bring significant advantages to a few paper Vendors
who participate ISO graphic industries committee because they want to promote their papers.
When using the Colorsource applications Optical Brighteners correction you should match the ISO paper tints
much more often, because ISO paper tint references include appearance effects corrections.
Nevertheless, always keep in mind the paper tints recorded in ISO12647-2-3-4-6 or IDEAlliance ICC profiles
are very specious, and do not attach too much importance to the "standard" ISO 12647 Lab paper colors. If
needed, you can set up your own uncoated print and QA standards, by using CMYK_100%, CMYK_Gravure and
CMYK_Print_&_Proof applications CUSTOM target functionalities.
See as well Colorsource CMYK_Backgrounds application that shows that for example you can easily compute
an ICC profile for pink tinted newsprint paper from the non-tinted newsprint paper spectral characterization
data. This is meaning once again the paper tint has no importance when you use the appropriate tools!

Work procedure for using Colorlab for computing your CUSTOM

target colors from any target CMYK or 4 colors I.C.C. profile:
This is an important point, because using CUSTOM target colors is quite useful for a wide range of traditional
and digital color printing applications. Because it will not be possible, not even desirable, normalizing billions of
different printing configurations!
For example, if you use a digital color printer not for producing CMYK proofs but for printing wide color gamut
documents, setting up your own CUSTOM target is compulsory. Same considerations prevail for most of CMYK
or N-Colors Packaging print applications.
You can easily configure your CMYK_100%, CMYK_Gravure, and free CMYK_Print_&_Proof control
applications for setting and controlling your offset, gravure, or flexographic presses in order to match any
future ISO 12647-x or more relevant private CMYK print standards.
For this purpose, you have to set your CUSTOM target colors and/or target TVI curves in the application’s
Custom tabs. (Brown tabs)
Free Colorlab v2.8.13 software allows you computing for any CMYK chart the Lab colors you will get on paper
according to any ISO or non-ISO CMYK I.C.C. profile.
This works of course with the CGATS reference text files of the optimized color charts designed for Colorsource
applications, and allows you to set easily your CMYK_100%, CMYK_Gravure, and CMYK_Print_&_Proof
applications CUSTOM target colors, by simple copy and paste to their Custom tabs.

COLORSOURCE S.A.R.L. - R.C.S. ÉVRY 453 219 768 - SIRET 453 219 768 00018 - CODE APE 7022Z
Let us for example configure CMYK_100% application for setting an offset press on high
quality Light Weight coated paper with AM screening:
For this purpose, you need to set into the CMYK_100% application Custom tab, the C.I.E. Lab D50 2° target
colors specified by PSO_LWC_Improved_eci.icc CMYK I.C.C. profile, this for the 8 patches of CMYK_RGB.tif
chart or even better the 12 patches of the CMYK_RGB_CMYK75%.tif chart. (Because computed CUSTOM target
colors will then be valid for both charts).

This can be done easily, by computing the Lab color produced by all CMYK patches of chart text reference file
“CMYK_100%_ref_CMYK_RGB.txt", via the reference ISO target I.C.C. profile “PSO_LWC_Improved_eci.icc"
Of course, you do not need to do so because the standard “PSO_LWC_Improved_eci.icc" ISO CMYK target is
already programmed in your CMYK_100% and CMYK_Gravure and CMYK_Print_&_Proof applications, but
the process keeps the same for extracting your CMYK target colors from any other reference CMYK target
I.C.C. profile.

1. Launch Colorlab software: The following window appears:

2. Drag and drop the CMYK_100%_ref_CMYK_RGB.txt text reference file on this window.
The following window appears:

3. Call Colorlab menu allowing converting the reference file CMYK values into C.I.E. Lab:

© Colorsource 2010-2019 - CMYK_100% and CMYK_Gravure applications User's Guide - May 2019 – Revision 11. Page 32/38
COLORSOURCE S.A.R.L. - R.C.S. ÉVRY 453 219 768 - SIRET 453 219 768 00018 - CODE APE 7022Z
4. Choose PSO_LWC_Improved_eci.icc as source profile and Lab-Profile.icc as destination:
Of course, Absolute has to be chosen as the source profile Rendering Intent:

Then press OK.

5. You then get Lab text reference file of CMYK_100%_ref_CMYK_RGB.txt for

PSO_LWC_Improved_eci.icc CMYK ISO profile:

6. Make “File/Save as..." to save your CUSTOM target colors text file with some meaningful name such
as “CMYK_100%_ref_CMYK_RGB.txt_to_Lab_via_PSO_LWC_Improved_eci.txt"

7. For configuring CMYK_100% CUSTOM Lab target, import it to the Custom tab and name your
CUSTOM color target:
Specify your CUSTOM target colors measured in Self-Backing mode as for ISO ICC profiles.
100 100 100 100 0 200 200 200 75 75 75 75 %

These target colors without CMYK or 4CLR device values have to be extracted from a CMYK ICC profile by using a reference CMYK file of the "Charts" tab
Your Custom target colors can be specified here by pasting a reference CMYK or 4 CLR chart colorimetric or spectral measurement file, or be extracted from any CMYK or 4CLR ICC profile.
Your Custom target colors have to be measured in Self-Backing mode.
Please note that when you specify your custom target colors by colorimetric values, only the Lab values are used and not the XYZ values.
The decimal separator of your data should be a dot. Import 1 reference copy has been measured

You can then save your CMYK_100% application configured for offset on Light Weight Coated Improved paper
and AM screening with some meaningful name such as CMYK_100%_ PSO_LWC_Improved_AM.exe".
For computing from a reference ICC profile up your CUSTOM target for CMYK_Gravure, you should follow the
same work procedure, but using one the two following the CGATS text reference files:
"CMYK_Gravure_ref_one_off_3_lines_chart.txt" or "CMYK_Gravure_ref_3_lines_chart_read_1_to_15.txt".

Please note that when using Colorlab you should use ICC v2.0 format ICC profile. Using ICC v4.0 may only offer
little advantages if you are not using a D50 workflow.
Please note as well that for performing above procedure with non-CMYK 4 colors ICC profiles, you should not
use a CGATS CMYK text reference file but a CGATS four colors text reference file: Appropriate sample 4_CLR
reference files are supplied with CMYK_100% and CMYK_Gravure distribution kits on the web.
Do not forget that you can also create your CUSTOM target colors not by using a reference CMYK or
four colors ICC profile (that is not often available when you are creating a new standard), but by using averaged
spectral or colorimetric measurements files of target reference prints or proofs. For importing a very large
CMYK chart measurement file into Custom tab, you can first extract automatically all useful spectral data from
your large measurement file by using our free ICC_Normalize application.

Using CMYK_100% and CMYK_Gravure with non-CMYK inks:

No problem: Works the same. Of course, you need specifying your own CUSTOM non-CMYK target colors
standard. Use the less saturated ink as last color in your measurement files in order to take advantage of the
applications ink superimpositions diagnostic on your three inks with saturated colors. (Of course, this has
nothing to do with your inks print order sequence that you are free to choose):

According to your preferences, you should measure on white background (Self-Backing) Please measure with no polarizing filter.
Paste spectral data. Otherwise the application cannot compute your optimal solid densities and has to estimate dot gains from colors values.
The decimal separator of your data should be a dot.

Software parameter settings for various target print
configurations:
All ISO 12647-2, ISO 12647-3, ISO 12647-4, ISO 12647-6, and IDEAlliance target data are pre-programmed into
your CMYK_100% and CMYK_Gravure applications. In CMYK_Gravure application the four appropriate target
TVI curves are set automatically according to the target ISO or CUSTOM standard you choose.
For more information about ISO12647-2-3-4-6 and the strange IDEAlliance standards:
http://www.color-source.net/en/Docs_Formation/2014_POINT_ABOUT_ISO_12647_STANDARDS.pdf

This paper also explains alternative possibilities of using I.C.C. profiles on your prepress workflow for simulating
your ISO CMYK color proofs with your CMYK printing press: In this case, it is not always necessary to choose the
traditional ISO target dot gains curves as published by Fogra or IDEAlliance.
However, it is easier to set initially your presses by using purely densitometric methods as described in this
document, which are very easy and fast to implement with Colorsource software.
Using these good densitometric methods for setting your presses with constant and consistent results is
initially essential in any case, even if good use of I.C.C. profiles on your prepress workflow can bring you even
more advantages in a second step. Because it would be vain to set up any new standard if you are no able to
set all your presses every day on same constant arbitrary target colors and TVI curves.
High quality N-Colors printing, that cannot and should not be normalized, is based as well on densitometric
press settings for matching N arbitrary target colors and N arbitrary TVI curves.

Truly optimized print standards: Yours!

CMYK_100% and CMYK_Gravure also allow you fixing more ambitious colors target such as for high CMYK
print densities, for producing top quality print works such as Art Books.
Coupled with SPOT_Color_Manager and SPOT_Gravure applications, they also allow excellent seven colors
printing (heptachromie) by using CMYK + Orange + Green + Blue or Violet, with offset, gravure, and
flexographic print technologies.
SPOT_Color_Manager allows computing your special inks optimal print density and checking their formulation
quality, so that your Colorsource press setting applications allows you optimizing any N-color print using
transparent inks.

Troubleshooting and FAQS:
The application does not launch:
Colorsource applications are using Microsoft Excel for computing engine. Use Microsoft Excel 2007, Excel 2010
or Excel 2013 or 2016 or later.
Please note that Excel (or Microsoft Office) should be installed with appropriate Microsoft Office
components including Visual Basic, otherwise the application will not launch.
Sometimes optional components of Microsoft Excel (depending on your Excel version and installation kit)
MUST be installed. If needed go to Windows Control Panel, in the program’s installation menu:

Right click on 2007 or 2010 or 2013 or 2016 or later Microsoft

Office System and ask to modify the existing installation:
Shared office components such as fonts and Visual Basic for
Applications have to be installed.
Then launch Excel and go to Excel Options, Confidentiality
management center, and then press the Parameters button:

You HAVE TO approve the access to object model of VBA project:

Check your Excel version is installed with
all most recent Microsoft updates.
For checking Excel is up to date,
go to Excel/Options/Resources (Excel
2007), or go to Excel/File/Help or to
Excel/File/Account and then press the
« Search for updates » button.

Finally, if the application does not launch, disable your antivirus: There are no problems with most of the
serious antivirus applications (including Windows native protection systems, free antivirus like Avira, AVG etc.)
but some rare antivirus applications may prevent the application launching.
Make a test by disabling your antivirus and if necessary, change of antivirus program if your present application
is the problem.

I cannot paste or import my measurement data in the Measure tab:
The program says it is “The cell is write protected”.
Please note before pasting your spectral measurement text file to Measure tab, you need first select cell
"Paste here!" with your mouse, or select a cell in the relevant "Tint names" column when using
SPOT_Color_Manager, in order to paste your data at the right location.
If you don’t select the right cell, you may get a “write protected message”: This does not mean the useful cells
are write protected: This means that your text measurement file tries to write not only the allowed cells but
also one or more write protected cell(s) around.
This can happen for example if you add many blank (and invisible!) lines at the end of the text measurement
file after the last data line “END_DATA”, or if blank data are present at the end of each line.
Each Colorsource application authorizes pasting your spectral (or sometimes colorimetric) measurement file
produced when using the relevant reference files. If you import colorimetric or spectral measurement files
from some other application, mind to format your measurement data the appropriate way.

The application shows error messages such as “#####” or strange curves in the
result display tabs once I have pasted my data:
Check your measurement data decimal separator is a dot. If needed see the details in the “software installation
and brief description guide” on page 11.
Check you have pasted your measurement data at the right location(s) in your Colorsource application.

Results tabs display too small or too large on my monitor:

Press “Ctrl” key and use the mouse wheel for zooming in or out, and then save your application (“Ctrl s”).
You can mask Excel ribbon (Point the ribbon with your mouse and use the mouse right button menu).
You can as well use Excel FULL SCREEN display (menu display … Full screen) because you do not need Excel
menus for making full use of Colorsource software. The Escape key allows switching back to normal Excel
display mode.

Colorsource software search for the language at each start:

Each Colorsource application detects your keyboard language and configures the appropriate language at first
launch. You have to save your application ("Ctrl s" or File/Save) for avoiding the application searching the
language at each following launch.

CMYK_100%, CMYK_Gravure and CMYK_Print_&_Proof offer me all traditional

ISO 12647-2, ISO 12647-3, ISO 12647-4 and ISO 12647-6 target Lab colors, but I
want to match “Euroscale.icc” target colors!
Please see in this guide how to compute your own color targets from target ICC profiles and record them as
colorimetric CGATS measurement files.

Colorsource software cannot run on my Macintosh:

Yes, it can under Windows XP or Windows 7 or Windows 8.x. or Windows 10.

OK but it cannot run them under MacOS X:

OK when we can find 300 US$ mobiles Mac as for mobile PCs! Because Colorsource applications work very well
on low cost PCs and on 10 years-old Win XP PC if needed, so that using expensive Macs would be as uselessly
expensive at the time as using the latest iPhone!
Moreover, many excellent and free color management and applications now only run under Windows
operating systems, including some of them that are 20 years old, so that the widest variety of color
management applications and utilities experts need are only supported by Windows today. You can always
use the results of these apps on your Macs.
