CHAPTER 1 Overview of Granite Core

This chapter provides an overview of Granite Core. It includes the following sections:
 “Introducing the Granite Product Family” on page 7
 “How the Granite Product Family Works” on page 8
 “New Features in Granite Core Version 2.6” on page 9
 “iSCSI-Compliant Storage Array Interoperability” on page 10

Introducing the Granite Product Family

The Granite product family enables 100% consolidation of data and applications that delivers LAN
performance at the branch office over the WAN. By functioning as a virtual branch storage system, the
Granite product family eliminates the need for dedicated storage, including management and related
backup resources, at the branch office.
With the Granite product family, you can extend a data center storage array to a remote location, even over
a low-bandwidth link. The Granite product family delivers business agility, enabling you to effectively
deliver global storage infrastructure anywhere you need it.

Note: Granite Edge functionality requires the Steelhead EX v1.0.2 and above.

The Granite product family provides the following functionality:

 Innovative block storage optimization ensures that you can centrally manage data storage while
keeping that data available to business operations in the branch, even in the event of a WAN outage.
 A local authoritative cache ensures LAN-speed reads and fast cold writes at the branch.
 Integration with Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service enables consistent point-in-time data
snapshots and seamless integration with backup applications.
 Integration with the snapshot capabilities of the storage array and enables you to configure
application-consistent snapshots through the Granite Core Management Console.
 Integration with industry-standard Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP)
authenticates users and hosts.

Granite Core Appliance Installation and Configuration Guide 7

Overview of Granite Core How the Granite Product Family Works

 A secure vault protects sensitive information using AES 256-bit encryption.

 Solid state disks (SSDs) that guarantee data durability and performance.
 An active-active high-availability (HA) deployment option for Granite Core ensures the availability of
storage array Logical Unit Numbers (LUNs) for remote sites.
 Customizable reports provide visibility to key utilization, performance, and diagnostic information.
By consolidating all storage at the data center and creating diskless branches, the Granite product family
eliminates data sprawl, costly data replication, and the risk of data loss at the branch office.

How the Granite Product Family Works

The Granite product family is designed to enable branch office server systems to efficiently access storage
arrays over the WAN. The Granite product family is typically deployed in conjunction with Steelhead
appliances, and is comprised of the following components:
 Granite Core - Granite Core is a physical or virtual appliance deployed in the data center alongside
Steelhead appliances and the centralized storage array. Granite Core mounts iSCSI LUNs provisioned
for the branch offices. Additionally, Granite Core-VE can mount LUNs via Fibre Channel.
 Granite Edge - Granite Edge runs as a module on Steelhead EX or as a standalone appliance. Granite
Edge virtually presents as one or more iSCSI targets in the branch. Granite Edge presents itself to
application servers—either located inside VSP on the Steelhead EX, or externally as physical or virtual
server platforms—in the branch as a storage portal. From the portal, the application server can mount
iSCSI LUNs are projected across the WAN from the data center. Granite Edge can also host local LUNs
for use as temporary storage.
The branch office server connects to Granite Edge, which implements handlers for the iSCSI protocol. The
Granite Edge also connects to the block store, a persistent local cache of storage blocks.
When the branch office server requests blocks, those blocks are served locally from the block store (unless
they are not present, in which case Granite Edge retrieves them from the data center LUN via Granite Core).
Similarly, newly written blocks are spooled to the local cache, acknowledged by the Granite Edge to the
branch office server, and then asynchronously propagated to the data center. Because each Granite Edge
implementation is linked to one or more dedicated LUNs at the data center, the block store is authoritative
for both reads and writes, and can tolerate WAN outages without affecting cache coherency.
Blocks are communicated between Granite Edges and Granite Cores through an internal protocol. The
Granite Core then writes the updates to the data center LUNs through the iSCSI or Fibre Channel protocol.
(Optionally, you can further optimize traffic between the branch offices and the data center by
implementing Steelhead appliances.)
Granite initially populates the block store using the following methods:
 Reactive prefetch - The system observes block requests, applies heuristics based on these observations
to intelligently predict the blocks most likely to be requested in the near future, and then requests those
blocks from the data center LUN in advance.
 Policy-based prefetch - Configured policies identify the blocks that are likely to be requested at a
given branch office site in advance; the Granite Edge then requests those blocks from the data center
LUN in advance.
 First request - Blocks are added to the block store when first requested. Because the first request is
cold, it is subject to standard WAN latency. Subsequent traffic is optimised.

8 Granite Core Appliance Installation and Configuration Guide

New Features in Granite Core Version 2.6 Overview of Granite Core

System Architecture
At the data center, Granite Core integrates with existing storage systems and Steelhead implementations.
Granite Core connects dedicated LUNs with each Granite Edge at the edge or branch office.
Each Granite Edge contains a block store that mirrors the datastore LUN. As a result, the block store
eliminates the need for separate block storage facilities at the branch office and all the associated
maintenance, tools, backup services, hardware, service resources, and so on.
The following diagram illustrates a generic deployment.
Figure 1-1. Generic Granite Deployment

The basic Granite system components are:

 Branch server - The branch-side server that accesses data from the Granite system instead of a local
storage device. This server can also run as a VSP VM on the local Steelhead EX.
 Block store - A persistent local cache of storage blocks. Because each Granite Edge is linked to a
dedicated LUN at the data center, the block store is authoritative for both reads and writes. In
Figure 1-1, the block store on the branch side synchronizes with LUN1 at the data center.
 iSCSI initiator - The branch-side client that sends SCSI commands to its iSCSI target (for example, the
Granite Edge) at the data center.
 Granite-enabled Steelhead EX - Also referred to as a Granite Edge appliance, the branch-side
component of the Granite system links the edge server to the block store and links the block store to the
iSCSI target and LUN at the data center. The Steelhead appliance provides WAN optimization services.
 Data center Steelhead appliance - The data center-side Steelhead appliance peer for WAN
optimization.
 Granite Core - The data center component of the Granite product family. Granite Core manages block
transfers between the LUN and the Granite Edge.
 iSCSI target - The data center-side storage array that communicates with the branch-side iSCSI
initiator.
 LUNs - Each Granite Edge requires a dedicated LUN in the data center storage configuration.

New Features in Granite Core Version 2.6

The following features are available in Granite Core v2.6:

Granite Core Appliance Installation and Configuration Guide 9

Overview of Granite Core iSCSI-Compliant Storage Array Interoperability

 Handoff Host configuration support - Granite Core supports application-consistent snapshots for
storage arrays from specific providers (Dell EqualLogic, EMC CLARiiON, EMC VNX, IBM V7000, or

CHAPTER 2 Managing Riverbed Licenses

This chapter describes the Riverbed licensing methods and how to manage Riverbed licenses. It includes
the following sections:
 “Riverbed Licensing Methods” on page 13
 “Automatic Licensing” on page 14
 “Manual and Token Licensing Using the Riverbed Licensing Portal” on page 15

Riverbed Licensing Methods

A license is a string issued by Riverbed that embeds information that ties the license to data to prevent
tampering. After you install the license, the system saves it in the configuration database and enables the
functionality associated with the license. Riverbed employs the following licensing methods:
 Automatic Licensing - Once you connect your Granite Core appliance to the network, the Granite Core
appliance automatically contacts the Riverbed Licensing Portal which downloads and installs the
licenses.
 Manual Licensing - You can manually fetch and activate licenses for Riverbed products using the
Riverbed Licensing Portal. Go to https://licensing.riverbed.com/index.htm and follow the
instructions to retrieve license keys. After you manually retrieve your licence keys, you need to install
them on the appropriate appliance.
 Token Method - You use tokens to activate Riverbed software, such as the Virtual Steelhead Mobile,
Virtual Whitewater appliance, Virtual Steelhead appliance, and Granite Core-VE. For detailed
information, see the respective installation guides for these products.
 Factory licensing - You can have all your Riverbed licenses installed at the factory for a small fee.

Granite Core Appliance Installation and Configuration Guide 13

Managing Riverbed Licenses Automatic Licensing

Automatic Licensing
Automatic licensing allows the appliance, once connected to the network, to automatically contact the
Riverbed Licensing Portal to retrieve and install license keys onto the appliance. Automatic licensing
simplifies inventory management and provides an automated mechanism of fetching licenses for Riverbed
products without having to manually activate individual appliances and licenses.
If you are behind a firewall, you can retrieve licenses at the Riverbed Licensing Portal using the email option
or by downloading and XML file to the Central Management Console. For detailed information, see
“Retrieving Licenses Using the Riverbed Licensing Portal” on page 15.
Automatic licensing also works over a web proxy. For details on setting up a web proxy, see the Granite Core
Appliance Management Console User’s Guide.

Tip: If automatic licensing fails, an error message appears in the Management Console. Go to the Riverbed Licensing
Portal and follow the instructions for retrieving your licenses.

To view licenses on a new Granite Core appliance

 Connect the new Granite Core to the network.
The Granite Core appliance automatically contacts to the Riverbed Licensing Portal and downloads
and installs the licenses. The Management Console Licensing page displays a success message or the
Alarm Status page reports an actionable error message.

To replace expired licenses

 Purchase new downloadable licenses to replace the expired license.
At the time of the next scheduled automatic license fetch, the Granite Core automatically contacts the
Riverbed License Portal and downloads the new licenses. The Management Console Licensing page
displays a success message or the Alarm Status page reports an actionable error message. You do not
need to delete the expired license. The system uses the license with the latest expiration date.

To fetch a license on demand

1. In the Management Console, choose Configure > Maintenance > Licenses to display the Licenses page.

2. Click Fetch Updates Now.

The Management Console Licensing page displays a success message or the Alarm Status page reports

Configuring Granite Core Choosing a Network Deployment

Choosing a Network Deployment

Granite Core is typically deployed on a LAN, with communication between appliances taking place over a
private WAN or VPN. Because communication between Granite Edges and Granite Core typically takes
place over a secure WAN, it is not necessary to configure company firewalls to support Granite Core-
specific ports.
If you wish to configure your firewall to support Granite Core-specific ports, see “Firewall Requirements”
on page 3.
Before you begin the installation and configuration process, you must select a network deployment:
Typically, Granite Core is installed in an out-of-path deployment.
Figure 3-1. Granite Deployment

Checking Your Inventory

Your shipping carton contains the following items:
 Granite Core
 One standard Ethernet straight-through cable
 One serial null-modem cable
 One or two power cables (depending on your order)
Aside from country-specific requirements, all systems ship with the same power cable. The power
cable has a IEC 60320 C13 plug on one end (to connect to Granite Core) and a country-specific plug that
fits the wall socket for that country. If a system has two power supplies, it ships with two suitable
cables.
You must always connect Granite Core using either the cable in the accessories box or another cable
that is approved for use by the IEC in the country in which the appliance is connected.

Performing Additional Configuration Settings

After performing the initial setup using the Setup Wizard, you can configure additional iSCSI initiators and
LUNs; connect to more Granite Edges; and configure authentication using Challenge-Handshake
Authentication Protocol (CHAP), and set up storage array snapshots.
 Configuring iSCSI settings - You can view and configure the iSCSI initiator, portals, and targets in the
iSCSI Configuration page.
The iSCSI initiator settings configure how Granite Core communicates with one or more storage arrays
(targets) through the specified portal configuration. After configuring the iSCSI portal, you can open
the portal configuration to configure targets.
 Configuring LUNs - You can configure block disk, iSCSI and Edge Local LUNs in the LUNs page.
Typically, Block Disk and iSCSI LUNs are used to store production data. They share the space in the
blockstore cache of the associated Granite Edges, and the data is continuously replicated and kept
synchronized with the associated LUN in the datacenter. The Granite Edge blockstore caches only the
working set of data blocks for these LUNs; additional data is retrieved from the datacenter when
needed.
Edge Local LUNs are used to store transient and temporary data. Local LUNs also use dedicated space
in the blockstore cache of the associated Granite Edges, but the data is not replicated back to the
datacenter LUNs.
 Adding Granite Edges - After you configure the LUNs and Granite Edges for the Granite Core, you
can map the LUNs to the Granite Edges to which they are to be exposed.
You complete this mapping through the Granite Edge configuration in the Granite Core Management
Console by selecting the Granite Edge configuration from the list on the Configure > Storage > Granite
Edges page.
 Configuring snapshots - You can implement block level snapshots for specified storage arrays,
configure snapshot schedule policies (which you can be apply to configured LUNs), and configure
hosts for snapshot scripting in the Snapshots page.
For details about the above procedures, see the Granite Core Appliance Management Console User’s Guide.

Hardware and Software Requirements

This section describes the hardware and software requirements for installing and running Granite Core-VE.
It describes the following:
 “Hardware Requirements” on page 36
 “Recommendations for Optimal Performance” on page 36

Hardware Requirements
It is important to know the number of branches you plan to support before you allocate resources for your
Granite Core-VE installation. The table below lists the resource Riverbed recommends for the indicated
maximum number of branches.
Figure 3-11. Hardware Requirements

Model Memory Disk Space Recommended CPU Data Set Size Branches

VGC-1000-UL 2 GB 25 GB 2 @ 2.2 GHz 2 TB 5

VGC-1000-L 4 GB 25 GB 4 @ 2.2 GHz 5 TB 10

VGC-1000-M 8 GB 25 GB 8 @ 2.2 GHz 10 TB 20

VGC-1500-M 48 GB 350 GB 12 @ 2.1 GHz 35 TB 30

Recommendations for Optimal Performance

VM configuration is central to Granite Core-VE performance. Follow these tips for best results:
 Use a Gigabit link for the Aux interface - For optimal performance, connect the Aux virtual interfaces
to physical interfaces that are have a capacity of at least one Gbps.
 Do not share physical NICs - Assign a physical NIC to a single Aux interface. Do not share physical
NICs destined for other virtual interfaces with other VMs running on the ESX host, or bottlenecks
might result.
 Always reserve virtual CPU cycles - For best performance, it is important that Granite Core-VE
receives sufficient CPU resources. This can be enforced by reserving the number of virtual CPUs that
the model is supposed to function with. Also remember to reserve the number of clock cycles in terms
of CPU MHz; for example, for a model VGC-1000-UL installed on a quad core (Xeon based system
running at 2.6 GHz), you would reserve two vCPUs and 2 @ 2.6 GHz CPU cycles using vSphere.
 Do not overprovision the physical CPUs - Do not run more VMs than there are CPUs. For example, if
an ESX host is running on a 4-core CPU, all the VMs on the host should use not more than four virtual
CPUs.
 Use a server-grade CPU for the ESX host - Riverbed recommends Xeon or Opteron.
 Always reserve RAM - Memory is another very important factor in determining Granite Core-VE
performance. For details, see “Hardware Requirements” on page 36.
 Do not over-provision physical RAM - The total virtual RAM needed by all running VMs should not
be greater than the physical RAM on the system.

Basic Steps for Installing and Configuring Granite Core-VE for ESX Installing Granite Core-VE

 Do not use low-quality storage - Make sure that the Granite Core-VE disk used for the VMDK is
located on a physical disk medium that supports a high number of I/O operations per second (IOPS).
For example, use NAS, storage array, or dedicated SATA disks.

Installing Granite Core-VE Obtaining the Granite Core-VE VM Image

Obtaining the Granite Core-VE VM Image

Granite Core-VE is provided by Riverbed as an image that contains the VMX and VMDK files necessary to
create the VM.
The Granite Core-VE image is an installable open virtual appliance (OVA) package. OVA is a platform-
independent, efficient, extensible, and open packaging distribution format. The OVA package provides a
complete specification for Granite Core-VE for ESX, including its required virtual disks, CPU, memory,
networking, and storage. The following OVA packages are available:
 image.ova for the VGC-1000 series
 image-vgc.ova for the VGC-1500 series

Note: Model upgrades from VGC-1000 series to a VGC-1500 series are not supported through licensing. You must
deploy the correct OVA package.

The OVA file is a compressed .tar package that quickly creates a VM with predefined settings. It contains
the following files:
 OVF file - The XML description of Granite Core-VE.
 VMDK file - This contains the management system.
 Manifest file - The checksum of the OVF and VMDK.
 VMX file - The primary configuration; this is created when the OVA is deployed.
To obtain the OVA package, log in to your customer account at
https://support.riverbed.com.

Gathering Information
Before you begin, read the release notes for the product at https://support.riverbed.com. They contain
important information about this release. Next, gather the following information:
 host name
 domain name
 IP address
 DNS server
 interface IP addresses
 netmask
 default gateway

Opening the vSphere Client Installing Granite Core-VE

Opening the vSphere Client

Each package contains a predefined virtual hardware configuration for a Granite Core-VE. Do not open or
modify any of the files in the package. The package files require approximately 25 GBs of disk space.
Installation procedures vary depending on whether you are using the VMware VI or vSphere Client. The
examples in this document are created using vSphere.
Granite Core-VE on ESX is provided by Riverbed as an OVA file 4.1 and newer systems.

Granite Core Appliance Installation and Configuration Guide 39

Installing Granite Core-VE Opening the vSphere Client

Deploying the OVF Template

This section describes how to install and configure the default Granite Core-VE on a VMware ESX host
using the vSphere client.
Make sure the local storage datastore you select has enough capacity for the OVA package to be installed.
You need at least 25 GB. The larger VMDK containing the management system can be installed on any
datastore type. The smaller VMDK contains the Granite Core-VE statistics. The datastore must have enough
room to expand to the required size of the Granite Core-VE.

To deploy the OVA template

1. Open VMware vSphere, type the hostname IP address or name, type your user name, password, and
click Login.

2. Choose File > Deploy OVF template.

3. Click Deploy from file, and Browse.

4. Select the OVA file (filename ending in .ova), and click Open.

5. Click Next.

6. Verify that the OVA file is the one you want to deploy.

7. Click Next.

8. Type a name for the VM.

9. Click Next.

10. Select Thick provisioned format unless you have a specific reason for requiring thin provisioning.

11. Click Next.

12. Select the destination network name and select a network from the drop-down list to map the source
network to a destination network. Set Primary to Aux and Aux to Primary.

13. Click Next.

14. Verify the deployment settings and click Finish.

A message shows the amount of time before the deployment is finished. When the deployment
finishes, a message tells you the deployment was successful. You can edit disk size and provisioning
settings later by right-clicking the name of your VM.

15. Click Close.

The new VM appears under the hostname or host IP address to the VM inventory.
