This chapter provides an overview of Granite Core. It includes the following sections:
“Introducing the Granite Product Family” on page 7
“How the Granite Product Family Works” on page 8
“New Features in Granite Core Version 2.6” on page 9
“iSCSI-Compliant Storage Array Interoperability” on page 10
Note: Granite Edge functionality requires the Steelhead EX v1.0.2 and above.
System Architecture
At the data center, Granite Core integrates with existing storage systems and Steelhead implementations.
Granite Core connects dedicated LUNs with each Granite Edge at the edge or branch office.
Each Granite Edge contains a block store that mirrors the datastore LUN. As a result, the block store
eliminates the need for separate block storage facilities at the branch office and all the associated
maintenance, tools, backup services, hardware, service resources, and so on.
The following diagram illustrates a generic deployment.
Figure 1-1. Generic Granite Deployment
Handoff Host configuration support - Granite Core supports application-consistent snapshots for
storage arrays from specific providers (Dell EqualLogic, EMC CLARiiON, EMC VNX, IBM V7000, or
NetApp). However, if your storage array is different, you can use the handoff hosts feature to point to
a host to take the snapshot using scripts.
This feature is configurable in the Handoff Hosts page of the Granite Core Management Console. For
details, see the Granite Core Appliance Management Console User’s Guide.
Snapshot support for IBM V7000 - For details, see “iSCSI-Compliant Storage Array Interoperability”
on page 10.
Ability to expand online LUNs - Users can now increase the size of a LUN without taking it offline
first.
For details, see the Granite Core and Edge Appliance Deployment Guide.
User interface enhancements - The Granite Core Management Console has been improved to provide
a richer and more instructive user experience with the following enhancements:
– More detailed indication when settings are required. Selected snapshot configuration fields are
now marked with a red dot to indicate that the setting is required.
– The Home page now displays the number of LUNs configured through the current appliance.
– Inline warnings for snapshot configurations that can impact performance. For example, the
interface now warns you against scheduling more than 30 LUNs for hourly snapshots.
The following table lists storage systems qualified by the original storage vendor and Riverbed internal
engineers, and field-tested by Riverbed customers and partners.

This chapter describes the Riverbed licensing methods and how to manage Riverbed licenses. It includes
the following sections:
“Riverbed Licensing Methods” on page 13
“Automatic Licensing” on page 14
“Manual and Token Licensing Using the Riverbed Licensing Portal” on page 15
Automatic Licensing
Automatic licensing allows the appliance, once connected to the network, to automatically contact the
Riverbed Licensing Portal to retrieve and install license keys onto the appliance. Automatic licensing
simplifies inventory management and provides an automated mechanism of fetching licenses for Riverbed
products without having to manually activate individual appliances and licenses.
If you are behind a firewall, you can retrieve licenses at the Riverbed Licensing Portal using the email option
or by downloading and XML file to the Central Management Console. For detailed information, see
“Retrieving Licenses Using the Riverbed Licensing Portal” on page 15.
Automatic licensing also works over a web proxy. For details on setting up a web proxy, see the Granite Core
Appliance Management Console User’s Guide.
Tip: If automatic licensing fails, an error message appears in the Management Console. Go to the Riverbed Licensing
Portal and follow the instructions for retrieving your licenses.
