Korean language speakers are estimated to be approximately 75,000,000 in the whole world. This is less than the number of Japanese or German speakers, but sill a bit larger than the number of French speakers, ranking the number of Korean speakers in the world at 11th. This is quite similar to the rank of economic power based on each country’s GDP. Although the population of Korean has not suddenly increased, the number of people who are learning Korean is increasing rapidly, ‘This is the result of Korea! s growing economic power and expansion of its cultural heritage and tourism industry. It is not strange to find notices written in the Korean language in also a subject available as part of the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test), a standardized test for college admissions in the United States. In Japan, you can also easly find many public signs for subways stations and such in Korean. In addition, aan American airport any more. The Korean language is more than 30 universities in China have opened departments of Korean language and literature, Before the current amity between Korean and China, there were only four universities which had Korean language departments, but the language departments used the term Chosun, not Korean. Some colleges in the Shantung area even have 1,000 to 3,000 students who are leaming Korean every year. It is also no longer surprising news to hear about the enthusiasm for leaming the Korean language in Russia, Mongolia, and Vietnam. As a result, Korean is becoming one of the top 10 important languages of the world? With this change, the number of students who come to Korea to leam the Korean language is not only rapidly increasing, but also ranging in a variety of nationalities, However, in the past there have not been many Korean language textbooks and most of them were only focused on teaching English speaking students, even though the biggest group of Korean language leamers is Chinese, Those books also had drawbacks, such as the frequent use of trite or cliel’d phrases and lengthy and tedious grammar explanations. Hence, the Intemational Language Institute (LD) of Hanyang University decided to compile a textbook for Korean language leamers breaking away from the problems of existing textbooks, and has written a textbook based on a whole new approach and content compiled by the faculty of ILL. In order to maximize the academic performance, it offers a lot of natural color illustrations and pictures which editorial supervised by specialists. In addition, the grammar explanations in this book are written in 3 languages; English, Chinese and Japanese. Now, the IL is introducing the first volume out of six which are being developed. 1 praise the effort and work accomplished by all the ILI staff members, including Prof. Youngsook Lee, Prof. Yumi Lee, Prof. Junghoon Kim (ILI Korean Language Department). Mr. Choi, Sung Whan (ILI Manager) and Mr. Kao Ming (photographer and previous ILI student), I also appreciate Prof. Kim, Chong Yang (President of Hanyang University) and Prof. Pih, Jong-Ho (General Manager of University Press at Hanyang) for their support in assisting the ILI to produce a high quality textbook. This ILI textbook aims to be the most popular Korean language textbook for those who want to learn Korean both in Korea and overseas. I hope the students who use this Korean textbook serve as messengers in the realm of international and intercultural communication, be in it economic trade or cultural exchange between Korea and their countries January 25th, 2008 Director, International Language Institute, Hanyang University, Prof. Eom, Ik Sang moa eugts 8 m aei7|- 10 mw Seele 12 aA) 1} NAR > a 13h Ab > A 2st AD» Al 2 Bp BAL (2) om Al 3 tt Rte] St Cb» Al 3 Zh spo] BH C)- Al 4 ah Aled <> All 4 3} AV <2> AY 5 + 7K > ALS Tt 7H do © 2st S| Sh - 83 Al 6 3} dS} 22) CL « Al 6 3} SRS} BGI (2) Al 7 a} Zeiiay <1 Al 7 s+ Belly <2> Al 8 Bt BHF] Aap C1) « Al 8 Bt SHS] Gz} (2) A 9 Dt 7H AD Al 9 BH 7b <2) « Al 10 3} 418} <> A 10 3} Bt 2) - BLS S29] 742] - 155 mw Bs} St79] Ala - 156 AL 11h OF All 11 Bt OF <2> A 12 2} WL C1 Al 12 3} wes (2) A 13 2} AF D+ A 13 Bt ZIP <2) Al 14 Bf DAF CD Al 14 3} DRE > A 15 Tt O14 <)- Al 15 2} SAI (2> @ ES} SF 2| Avila - 227 m ES_etSo| Y - 228 = B)| AB 229 m S7| Set: 246 m2 Atel - 250 m fF] AHO! - 251 3 =01/7¢ aH ~ auc $22 gpl 3 1) eu _ au? ay) anh) eke az ane -0l/74 oe aay le Ba we) | ~2N7t aguiaae Bs Easy) ai 2) 2a oft = Vaya B84 ASE I] aan ARB 2]a}8}7] a ee Salo] ee whe7| 2/8 BAS} BA} EVA | SBR SY a aslo} later eerie By/H4s| BAe whe] eoyeaien pas} 24) ol Wel] alee i+ 714 aL ea ie 4| ag 2) 24) SESH =0}./-0}8 221A G24) Y97 2a 7B O19] 21817) Pe BAS] BAY 971 Oe 5 | 7# -oi4) nae the) 5 ye =A) eho} | 78 S42) ea et au | 24 dz te] | (a2 yyep | ala) ers}7] an 6 east og| 22 Bay7] | —#e| 7 | ade te7] (2) | HAS ARE HE] =A) Bale Ha) 71 (24 72 4) aver -(2)A1- 7 | aol 2 taaa7| ~(0)# a aA set) ‘a’ BA FH, O18, eb os, A, Ae, a, ae, Sa ma, 3, ach, vay, she, 34, a = | AME, Va | A, Sch, act S71, Seteh, obeteh, atch, se et aaa}, #9, 241,49, Aesth | ohalch et, aaa, wid aul, 71c2ch ol, | er alee, AA, AA, Bech, be, FRAG, sr a, 3a seas, 18 Ag, otal, ole = alal But}, FA, Bolsa, AG, WI, IFA, Sct 7A, ABR, A, FF, aRlolch, 2EH ee at KA, Act, BA, alert, 3, Ave AR ARI ast] Qa} ab] 8 HF} als} aCe ar \ el B37] =0}A}/-0F4) | 7\ 2) ~AIRE ) eda a71 =o} vio. ep a?
