STEM Project – Chemistry

Period 2 and 3 – Ms. Ellie

STEM Project – HS Chemistry. You have one week to do this from Thursday 14th November –
Thursday 21st November. Be ready to present on Thursday 21st November.
This will be worth 10% of your grade for the semester.
I would like to research and design a presentation to teach people about a specific area of
Chemistry. You will design your presentation to be given to an audience who are a similar age
group/level as you – i.e. High School Chemistry Students. You will need to learn some new
things to teach others. Your textbook will be useful to you.
You can choose from an example topic, or any other topic related to Chemistry. Two groups can
choose the same topic.
The example topics are:

 Cosmetic Chemistry – examples: how are deodorants/antiperspirants made, or how

does hair dye work
 Explosions (Nuclear chemistry) – one example is Fukushima, there are many others to
choose from
 Medicinal chemistry – how can chemists help to treat cancer, or make stem cells
Or any other topic of your choice.

Your task is to research the Chemistry behind your chosen area of Chemistry. Find chemical
equations (and be able to explain them), give real-life examples and say how your area of
Chemistry is useful. Teach your fellow classmates about your topic and how it has been
developed since it began.

 Your presentation should be around 5 minutes long with time (2 minutes) for questions
afterwards

 Each member of your group must speak and share the work equally

 You can use ppt. or demonstrations, or any other method where you are presenting
Project Presentation Outline

Your presentation outline should address these topics, and proceed in this order:

 Introduction – Summarize what you are going to talk about

 Background – When was it discovered, how, where, who?

 Information - Why is your topic/area of Chemistry useful, who uses it?

 Chemical links, formulas – make sure you can explain these. You will have to learn new
things.

 Future Work

 Leave time for questions - I will be interested to ask you some questions 

Make a list of references, include this somewhere in your work.

You will need to be ready to present by next Thursday 21st November 2019.
