Avril Lavigne dropped her new single, Head Above Water, on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old singer, who was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2014, detailed her health
struggles in the heart-wrenching ballad.

This is Avril's first song since going on a five-year music hiatus.

Lavigne shared the song's origin in an interview with PEOPLE.

'One night, I thought I was dying, and I had accepted that I was going to die,' she said. 'My
mom laid with me in bed and held me. I felt like I was drowning.'

Avril added: 'Under my breath, I prayed "God, please help to keep my head above the water."
In that moment, the song writing of this album began. It was like I tapped into something. It
was a very spiritual experience.
